Product names

One capital distinguishes the product from the company. Preserve it, and use the spellings below for products and services. A listed name does not establish availability or a release date; check those claims separately.

Product and company

Write FontLab for the product and Fontlab Ltd. for the company. Keep lowercase fontlab in the Python module name, domains such as help.fontlab.com, and other exact identifiers.

Introduce the full product name, then use a clear, consistent short form where appropriate. Keep the name steady while varying the surrounding prose. A new synonym can make the reader wonder whether you mean another product.

Name the application when a shared word such as Layer, Mask or Brush could refer to different objects. Check the glossary entry for that application before writing an example; a familiar label does not guarantee familiar behavior.

Open questions

These names still need a house-usage decision. Follow the linked entry and confirm the intended product and version before publication. An appearance in an interface does not by itself settle how the name should be used here.

Historical and internal names

Use the current replacement in new public copy. Preserve an older name when the historical event or exact label requires it, within the scope allowed by its entry. Modernizing the spelling must not rewrite the event.

During an editing pass, trace each shortened name to its first mention. If it could refer to two products, restore the distinguishing word. Keep historical quotations and machine-readable identifiers exact.
