Characters

  • Country/region: Tajikistan.

  • Area code minimum length 3 digits; 4 digits for smaller cities.
  • Mobile numbers use the format +7 (###) ###-##-##. Omit +7 when dialing inside Tajikistan.

Addresses

  • Never use real address information in examples.
  • Format order: postal code, country, region, city, street/avenue, building, apartment.
  • Example: 734000, Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон, ш. Душанбе, хиёбони Рӯдакӣ б. 45, х.32
  • Local postal code: 6-digit code, for example 734000
  • Always abbreviate шаҳр (city), бино (house), хона (apartment): ш., х., у
  • Items in brackets are optional.
  • "Street" can be кӯча, хиёбон, шоҳроҳ.
  • "City" can be шаҳр, шаҳрак, деҳа.
  • "State/region" can be вилоят, вилояти худмухтор.
  • Include the country in international addresses only.

Currency

  • Currency name: рубл (Ruble). Symbol: т.р.
  • Symbol comes after the amount.
  • Positive currency format: number, space, monetary symbol.
  • Negative sign symbol: -. Negative currency format: negative sign, number, space, monetary symbol.
  • Decimal symbol: ;. Digits after decimal: 2.
  • Digit grouping symbol: space. Digits in digit grouping: 3, 0.
  • Positive example: 123456 789;12 т.р.
  • Negative example: -123456 789;12 т.р.
  • ISO currency code: TJS
  • Subunit name: дирам. Subunit symbol: д. Example: 20 дирам

Digit groups

  • Decimal separator: , (comma). Example: 25 000,45
  • List separator: ;
  • Thousand separator: space. Example: 25 555 222
  • Use a period in product versions only. Example: MS-DOS 6.22; Windows 3.11
  • You may omit the thousand separator (space) for numbers with 4 digits in the integer part.
  • Numbers outside regular text may or may not have thousand separators. Values in Excel have none.

Measurement units

  • Metric system commonly used: yes. Temperature: Celsius.
  • Linear measure: Kilometer -> Километр, км; Meter -> Метр, м; Decimeter -> Дециметр, дм; Centimeter -> Сантиметр, см; Millimeter -> Миллиметр, мм

  • Use the quotation mark instead of дюйм for inches only when the full variant is technically impossible (length restrictions, or a locked English source string with the " sign).

Percentages

  • Percentage sign is %.
  • Use фоиз or дарсад equally for percent. They are synonyms, interchangeable in all occasions.

Sorting

  • Capital and lowercase letters are equal. Make no distinction.
  • Non-alphabetical characters (symbols like @ ! #) sort before the letters of the alphabet.
  • Digits sort after non-alphabetical characters and before the letters of the alphabet.

Geopolitical concerns

  • Check maps, flags, country/region, city and language names, art and graphics, and cultural content for accuracy and political restrictions.
  • Check country/region, city and language names for every release, even previously approved ones.
  • Check cultural content, clip art, religious symbols, and body and hand gestures for appropriateness in the target market.
  • Use the most up-to-date Tajik list of country/region and city names for every release.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives come after the noun.
  • en Red square -> Майдони сурх; not Сурхмайдон
  • Form the relative degree with the suffix -тар, the superlative with -тарин.
  • Avoid overuse of possessive adjectives.
  • en Your device needs to communicate with server to set up your account. -> Барои сохтани ҳисоб дастгоҳи шумо бояд бо сервер пайваст шавад.; not Барои сохтани ҳисоби шумодастгоҳи шумобояд бо сервер пайваст шавад.

Articles

  • Translate the indefinite article an with як or ягон before the noun, or with the ending -е after the noun.
  • en Please select a file to open. -> Лутфан файлеро барои кушодан интихоб кунед., Лутфан ягонфайлро барои кушодан интихоб кунед.
  • en You need to enter a keyword to start searching -> Барои оғози ҷустуҷӯ шмо бояд яккалима калидиро ворид кунед.
  • Usually do not translate the definite article The. Where needed, translate it with ин.
  • en The search item was not found. -> Объекти ҷустуҷӯ ёфт нашуд. (no article)
  • en Do you accept the terms and conditions? -> Оё шумо бо иншартҳо розиед. (with ин)
  • Use unlocalized product and feature names without articles, as in English.
  • en Powerpoint -> Powerpoint
  • Handle localized feature names by the general article rules.
  • en Media Player -> Медиа плеер
  • For an English loan word already used, check motivation (does the English word integrate into the noun class system), analogy (is there an equivalent Tajik term whose article could be used), and frequency (which article is most common in other technical documentation). Write loan words in Tajik and apply Tajik rules.
  • Check approved terminology to confirm a new loan word and its article.

Capitalization

  • Use less capitalization than English. Do not copy English capitalization.
  • Capitalize proper names: personal names and surnames, geographic names, names of organizations and companies, names of books and newspapers.
  • Capitalize names of UI elements (commands, menus, dialog box titles) and program names. In compound names capitalize the first word only.
  • en Row Height and Width -> Баландӣ ва бари катакҳо; not Баландӣ ва Бари Катакҳо

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds.
  • Compound nouns are widely used. Example: Phonebook -> Дафтарчаи телефон; worksheet -> сафҳаи корӣ
  • Never use hyphenation to make a compound noun. Write the morphemes separately.
  • To make a compound noun plural, pluralize the first noun.
  • en Phonebooks -> Дафтарчаҳои телефон; not Дафтарчаи телефонҳо

Gender

  • There is no grammatical gender in Tajik.
  • He/she -> вай, ӯ
  • Her/his -> (-и) вай, (-и) ӯ

Genitive

  • Form the genitive with ро.
  • Do not attach ро directly to a product name. Put a space after the name, then -ро.
  • en I accept Java's terms and conditions. -> Ман шартҳои Java -ро қабул мекунам.; not Ман шартҳои Javaро қабул мекунам.

Modifiers

  • The modifier comes after the main noun. Never translate word by word.
  • en Security warning. -> Огоҳии амниятӣ; not Амнияти огоҳӣ

Nouns

  • Tajik does not differentiate noun classes by animacy or gender.
  • Inflection: does not apply to Tajik.
  • Form the plural with the suffixes ҳо, он, гон.
  • en Features -> Вазифаҳо
  • en Children -> Бачагон
  • ҳо works with any word. он and гон work with certain words only. Never use гон with a word ending in a consonant.
  • Both бачагон and бачаҳо are correct plurals of бача.
  • en Books -> Вазифаҳо; not Китобгон

Prepositions

  • Use the preposition specific to each verb. Do not copy the source preposition. Do not omit prepositions or change word order under English influence.
  • en click on -> клик дар болои
  • en on a web page -> даряк сафҳаи веб

Pronouns

  • Pronouns are neutral and never refer to a specific gender.
  • Translate gendered source text without stressing gender difference or reinforcing stereotypical distinctions.
  • en She is a skilled user of Microsoft Office -> Вай корбари ботаҷрибаи Microsoft Office мебошад; not Он зан (духтар ) корбари ботаҷрибаи Microsoft Office мебошад

Punctuation

  • Comma: separate the main clause from the subordinate clause in complex sentences.
  • en If you do not have an account yet, please register here. -> Агар шумо ҳоло ҳисобе надошта бошед, лутфан дар ин ҷо қайд шавед.; not Агар шумо ҳоло ҳисобе надошта бошед лутфан дар ин ҷо қайд шавед.
  • Comma: use in sentences with several subjects or predicates.
  • en Download music, images, games and video clips. -> Мусиқӣ, тасвирҳо, бозиҳо ва видеоклипҳоро зеркашӣ кунед.; not Мусиқӣ тасвирҳо бозиҳо ва видеоклипҳоро зеркашӣ кунед.
  • en Copy, move, save and share items. -> Ҷузъҳоро нусха бардоред, интиқол диҳед, захира кунед ва мубодила кунед.; not Ҷузъҳоро нусха бардоред интиқол диҳед захира кунед ва мубодила кунед.
  • Colon: use after alerting words like Attention, Warning, Caution, and in sentences with multiple step instructions.
  • en Warning: Save your work before restarting -> Огоҳӣ: пеш аз дубора фурӯзон кардан, кори худро захира кунед.; not Огоҳӣ - пеш аз дубора фурӯзон кардан, кори худро захира кунед.
  • en To safe a file with a different name, please follow these steps: a) Open the file b) Go to File and c) lick Save as…. -> Барои бо номи дигар захира кардани файл, лутфан амалҳои зеринро иҷро кунед: a) Файлро кушоед b) Ба Файл гузаред ва c) Захира ҳамчун... ро клик кунед; not Барои бо номи дигар захира кардани файл, лутфан амалҳои зеринро иҷро кунед; a) Файлро кушоед b) Ба Файл гузаред ва c) Захира ҳамчун... ро клик кунед.
  • Do not capitalize regular text after a colon unless general capitalization rules apply.
  • Hyphen: divides words between syllables and links parts of a compound word. No spaces before or after. Never use a hyphen instead of a dash. Example: интернет-банкинг
  • En dash: use as a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. Omit the space when the minus marks a negative number. Example: 1 – 2 = –1
  • En dash: use in number ranges with no spaces. en Pages 10–20 -> Саҳ. 10–20
  • Em dash: use for dashes wherever technically possible. Never substitute a hyphen.
  • Ин хабар воқеият надорад – изҳор кард ӯ – зеро ман худ дар он ҷо будам.; not Ин хабар воқеият надорад - изҳор кард ӯ - зеро ман худ дар он ҷо будам.
  • Ellipses: use for a continuing process. en Loading… -> Бор мекунад…
  • Period: always use a full stop at the end of a sentence. Avoid a full stop at the end of phrases, unless instructed to follow English punctuation. Put the period outside the brackets at the end of a sentence. The period comes after the quotation mark.
  • Нармафзор ба таври худкор навсозӣ мешавад.; not Нармафзор ба таври худкор навсозӣ мешавад
  • Ҳамеша нуқтаро пас аз қавсайн гузоред (агар он дар охири ҷумла ояд).; not Ҳамеша нуқтаро пас аз қавсайн гузоред (агар он дар охири ҷумла ояд.)
  • Ӯ гуфт: "Ин барнома кӯҳна шудааст".; not Ӯ гуфт: "Ин барнома кӯҳна шудааст."
  • Quotation marks: use for names of books, films, articles, companies, newspapers.
  • ҶСП «Ориенбонк», газетаи «Озодагон», китоби «Ғуломон»; not ҶСП Ориенбонк, газетаи Озодагон, китоби Ғуломон
  • Modern Tajik mostly uses Russian quotation marks «». English quotation marks are also allowed. «Тоҷик Эйр»= “Тоҷик Эйр”
  • Parentheses: no space between the parentheses and the text inside. Example: (Нигаред ба саҳифаи 5)

Singular and plural

  • Form the plural mostly with -ҳо, -он, -гон, вон. Example: биноҳо, одамон, бачагон
  • Avoid Arabic plural forms of Arabic loan words where possible.
  • en Word - Words -> Калима – Калимаҳо; not Калима – Калимот

Split infinitive

  • Does not apply to Tajik.

Subjunctive

  • Use the subjunctive mood to address software, such as checkbox options.
  • en Don't show this dialog again -> Ин гуфтугӯ дигар нишон дода нашавад; not Ин гуфтугӯро дигар нишон надеҳ

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • Do not separate certain expressions at the end of a line. Use ctrl + shift + space bar between the words.
  • Between two parts of a single word: такрор мешавад
  • Between Part, Chapter or Appendix and the number: Қисми сеюм

Syntax

  • The predicate is always at the end. Never follow English syntax.

  • Inflect verbs for subject and number.
  • en They installed 3 applications. He will install one game. -> Онҳо 3 барномаро насб карданд. Вай як бозиро насб хоҳад кард.; not Онҳо 3 барномаро насб кард. Вай як бозиро насб хоҳанд кард.

Verbs

  • Inflect verbs for subject, number and time.
  • рафтан in Present Simple, singular: Ман меравам, Ту меравӣ, Вай меравад
  • Plural: Мо меравем, Шумо меравед, Онҳо мераванд
  • Translate an English gerund for a continuous operation with the Tajik Continuous Tense or with Present Simple.
  • en The program components are being installed. -> Ҷузъҳои барнома насб шуда истодаанд.; not Ҷузъҳои барнома насб мешаванд.
  • Use both passive and active voice, depending on the situation.
  • en You have successfully changed your password -> Пароли шумо бомуваффақият иваз карда шуд. (passive), Шумо бомуваққияти пароли худро иваз кардед. (active)

Word order

  • The adverbial modifier of time comes before the predicate.
  • en I will be there at 10 o'clock. -> Ман дар соати 10 он ҷо мешавам.; not Ман он ҷо дар соати 10 мешавам.

Audience

  • Audience is diverse: students, software developers, corporate users.

Style

  • Use a more formal, less colloquial style, as in media and press. Less ambiguity and passiveness. Direct but polite tone, especially in writing.

Tone

  • Use a formal tone. Exception: descriptions of computer games and other entertainment items.
  • en Your license has expired -> Мӯҳлати иҷозатномаи шумо ба охир расид (formal); not Иҷозатномаатон тамом шудааст (informal)
  • en Excellent. Continue to next level. -> Олӣ. Ба пеш, ба сатҳи дигар. (informal); not Олӣ. Дар сатҳи навбатӣ идома диҳед (formal)

Voice

  • Translate You as шумо. Do not capitalize the first letter.
  • en You are now connected to the Internet. -> Ҳоло шумо ба Интернет пайваст шудаед.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate UI words (mainly button or option names) only for lack of space. Either cut letters at the end of a word and replace them with a dot, or cut letters from the middle and replace them with a hyphen.
  • саҳифа -> саҳ.
  • нигаред -> ниг.
  • ва ғайра -> ва ғ.
  • сол -> с.
  • килобайт -> КБ
  • мегабайт -> МБ
  • килобит -> кбит
  • Never abbreviate масалан, агар, аммо, ба ҳар ҳол, бо вуҷуди ин.

Acronyms

  • Keep the most common English acronyms in English. Examples: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), RAM (Random Access Memory).
  • In user guides and help files you may add a translation in brackets.
  • Treat localized acronyms as normal acronyms: SIM card -> Корти СИМ; PIN code -> рамзи ПИН; SMS -> СМС
  • Use unlocalized acronyms as in English: MP3, ISO, UTF, RAM
  • Do not use MS as an abbreviation for a company name.

Applications, products, and features

  • Rarely translate application, product, or feature names. Verify a name is translatable and not protected before translating it.

Frequent errors

  • Incorrect word order when a placeholder is in the text.
  • Inconsistent style across a set of similar strings.
  • Following English syntax instead of Tajik syntax.

  • Translate by message type: commands imperative, dialog boxes declarative, error messages passive.

Status messages

  • A status bar message is informational, about the active document, a selected command, or an active or selected interface item. It shows in the status bar at the bottom of the window and refers to actions being performed or already complete.
  • Edit (menu): tj name Таҳрир; en Contains editing commands -> Фармонҳои таҳрирро дар бар мегирад
  • Copy to Folder... (menu): tj name Нусхабардорӣ ба ҷузвон; en Copies the selected items to a new location -> Ҷузъҳои интихобшударо ба ҷои нав нусхабардорӣ мекунад
  • New (command): tj name Нав; en Creates a new document -> Ҳуҷҷати нав месозад
  • en Make object visible? -> Намудор кардани объект?

  • Use one standard translation where the source phrases the same meaning differently.

  • Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or state that a restart is required.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate as in the source.
  • Translate error messages in a declarative form.
  • Always use хато for error and ишкол for bug.
  • en An error occurred in saving your settings. -> Ҳангоми захира кардани паёми шумо хато ба амал омад.; not Ҳангоми захира кардани паёми шумо ғалат ба амал омад.
  • Standardize standard phrases. Variations by context are possible.
  • en Cannot …, Could not … -> Наметавонад...; en Cannot find the search item -> Наметавонад ҷузъи ҷустуҷӯшавандаро ёбад, rephrasable as Ҷузъи ҷустуҷӯшаванда ёфт нашуд

  • en ... is not available, ... is unavailable -> ... дастрас нест; en Function is not available -> Вазифа дастрас нест., rephrasable as Вазифа дастнорас аст
  • Find out what replaces a placeholder before translating, so the sentence stays grammatical.
  • %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>.
  • Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d! means Checking Web <number> of <number>.
  • INI file “%1!-.200s!” section means INI file “<string>” section.
  • The Tajik sentence structure may not allow inserting the word where the English placeholder sits. Example: %d, %ld, %uва%lu <рақам> -ро нишон медиҳанд.

  • The keyboard is the primary input device for text input. Most actions can be performed with the keyboard.
  • References to key names, like arrow keys, function keys and numeric keys, appear in normal text, not in small caps, in both English and Tajik.

  • An additional letter in brackets after the item name can be a hot key: yes, as in English.
  • A number in brackets after the item name can be a hot key: yes, as in English.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name can be a hot key: yes, as in English.
  • Duplicate hot keys are allowed when no other character is available: yes, as in English.
  • No hot key is assigned when no characters are left (minor options only): yes, as in English.

Titles

  • English chapter titles begin with How to …, Working with … or Using …. Tajik titles may be narrative or interrogative.

  • Keep copyright text consistent within the product and across Tajik versions.
