  • Use acronyms with no established translation as in English: RAM -> RAM.
  • The gender of an acronym comes from the main word of the full translation.
  • In text add a descriptor word (usually the main word of the translation) to allow declension, or use neutral constructions. Omit the descriptor only for length restrictions (for example in UI) or when the text sounds awkward. Never omit it when the grammatical form of the acronym cannot be determined without it.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Belarusian one unless it is a perfect and natural fit.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal words, and only when the meaning is integral to the text.
  • Omit the colloquialism when it can go without affecting the meaning.

Nouns

  • Treat all program components and applications (wizards, agents, clients, browsers) as unanimated nouns: выкарыстоўваць (каго?) майстра -> выкарыстоўваць (што?) майстар; усталяваць (каго?) кліента -> усталяваць (што?) кліент

  • A missing trailing period in regular text is a language error, even in the last sentence of a paragraph or page.
  • End sentences with a period except in titles, headings, table column or row titles, and picture labels.
  • Use quotation marks for UI items (menus, commands) with no special formatting.
  • In software, product help, and web pages use straight quotation marks, as in English. No single quotation marks.
  • In documentation use chevrons, with straight quotation marks inside: «кнопка "Гатова"». The period stands outside the chevrons.
  • When double quotation marks are technically impossible, use a workaround: two sequenced single quotes (''), or code such as &quot in HTML.
  • No space between parentheses and the text inside them.
  • Place the full stop outside the closing bracket when the parentheses enclose part of a sentence, inside when they enclose a full sentence: Каб працягваць, націсніце кнопку «Далей» (можа спатрэбіцца ўказаць ключ прадукту).

Localization considerations

  • Translate all English text. Omit or add text only for a specific reason; check with the project team.
  • Make the text read as if originally written in Belarusian: idiomatic syntax and terminology, high terminological consistency.
  • Keep the text accurate, correct, clear. Avoid wordiness and word-by-word translation.
  • Adapt to local language, customs, and standards. Use Belarusian names rather than English: Edward -> Васіль; New York -> Мінск.
  • Do not translate every word: No line, thank you -> Няма сувязі., not Няма сувязі, дзякуй
  • Keep terminology consistent within a component, across components (software, help, documentation), and across products. Keep style and register consistent. Translate similar phrases consistently.

Accessibility

  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Components use a flexible, customizable UI, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.

Applications, products, and features

  • Verify a product, application, or feature name is translatable and unprotected before translating it. Feature names can be trademarked (IntelliSense™).
  • Version numbers always contain a period: Version 4.2. Version 2.3 -> Версія 2.3

Geopolitical concerns

  • Check for sensitive or potentially offensive content in maps, flags, country/region, city and language names, art and graphics, and cultural content such as encyclopedia entries and historical or political references.
  • Check maps and other graphical representations of countries/regions for accuracy and political restrictions.
  • Recheck country/region, city, and language names even if previously approved; they change regularly.
  • Check cultural content, clip art, religious symbols, and body and hand gestures against the culture of the target market.

Error messages

  • Error messages state an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or state that the computer must restart.
  • Keep translations natural and empathetic, not robot-like. Use consistent terminology and language style; do not just translate messages as they appear in the source.
  • Oops, that can't be blank... -> Гэта поле не можа заставацца пустым...
  • Not enough memory to process this command. -> Недастаткова памяці, каб апрацаваць гэту каманду.

  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."; "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."
