Persian (Iran) style guide

Voice and register

  • Style: clear, friendly, concise. Everyday conversational language, not formal technical language.
  • Write short, easy-to-read sentences.
  • No passive voice.
  • Be pleasant. Make explanations individualized and enjoyable to read.
  • No slang. Be careful with colloquialisms. A conversational tone is fine, but stay professional.
  • Match source style, not source words. Consider audience and intent.
  • Technical terms for technical audiences. Common words for consumers.
  • Deviate from standard translations when that keeps source intent.
  • Do not overuse company, brand or product names or logos. Use brand names correctly.
  • No corporate we, such as Microsoft announces…, We’re proud to introduce…, We want you to know. Keep the focus on you, the reader.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms, product names.
  • App: use instead of application or program.
  • Pick, choose: use pick in more fun, less formal or light-weight situations (pick a color, not choose a color) and choose for more formal situations. Do not use select unless the UI requires it.

  • Get: fine as a synonym for obtain or come into possession of. Avoid it for other general meanings.
  • Info: use in most situations unless information fits the context better. Use info when you point the reader elsewhere (for more info, see <link>).

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.

  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Persian-speaking markets.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate in the UI (mainly buttons, options) only for lack of space.
  • To shorten a phrase, remove unnecessary parts, use an infinitive instead of a complete verb, use the singular instead of the plural, or keep only the main noun.
  • Info. -> اطلا.; PM -> ب.ظ.; AM -> ق.ظ.; page -> ص.; PO box. -> ص.پ.; St. (street). -> خ.; Postal Code -> ک.پ.

Adjectives

  • Quality adjectives: after the noun, in predicate position.

Articles

  • Indefinite article is یک/ی: یک before the noun, ی after the noun. Definite article: either no article or این before the noun.
  • Do not use ی after the noun in two cases. First, when the text states the number of the noun, for example one email not two or more ones. Second, when adding ی turns the noun into another valid noun, such as شخص vs شخصی (person vs privacy), سبز vs سبزی (green vs vegetables), صورت vs صورتی (face vs pink). Take special care with شخص and شخصی, which are common in this context.
  • Untranslated product and feature names take no definite or indefinite article. Leave product names untranslated, following English rules.
  • Install Windows Platform Update -> را نصب کنید Windows Platform Update
  • Translated feature names are handled like a Persian term, with Persian grammar. Media Player -> پخش کننده رسانه
  • For an English loan word, choose the article by motivation (formally motivated features allowing integration into the Persian noun class system), analogy (an equivalent Persian term whose article can be used), and frequency (the article used most often in other technical documentation). Confirm a new loan word and its article to avoid inconsistencies.
  • Internet -> اینترنت; Internet call -> تماس اینترنتی (noun converted to adjective by adding ی)

Capitalization

  • Persian has no capitalization. Characters have no lower and upper case; they have different forms in initial, middle and end position.
  • Exception: brand names and registered trademarks follow the instructions given, either keeping the source capitalization untouched or localizing them.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds.
  • Compound nouns are very common: Phonebook دفترچهتلفن, Keyboard صفحهکلید.
  • Never hyphenate a compound noun. Write the morphemes separately with a short space.
  • To make a compound noun plural, pluralize the second noun.
  • keyboards: not صفحههای کلید, use صفحهکلیدها.
  • displays: not صفحههای نمایش, use صفحهنمایشها.

Conjunctions

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • If the colloquialism can go without changing the meaning, omit it.
  • Avoid cultural hints in translation, especially in technical documents. Prefer an informal, friendly tone.

Modifiers

  • Put the modifier after the main noun. Never translate a noun+modifier word by word. This matters most with a non-translatable product name as modifier.
