Use plain language. Use straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Use a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, or several clear words instead of one complicated term.
Be mindful when you refer to parts of the world. If you name cities, countries or regions in examples, make sure they are not politically disputed.
In examples that refer to several regions, use equivalent references. Do not mix countries with states or continents.
In text and images, represent diverse perspectives and circumstances. Show people from all walks of life in a wide variety of professions, educational settings, locales and economic settings.
Do not generalize or stereotype people by region, culture, age or gender, not even a positive stereotype. When representing job roles, choose names that reflect a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
Do not use profane or derogatory terms.
Do not use slang that could be considered cultural appropriation.
Do not use terms that may carry unconscious racial bias, or terms associated with military actions, politics, or controversial historical events and eras.
পুৰুষ মহিলা সকলোকে শুভেচ্ছা জনালোঁ। -> সকলোকে শুভেচ্ছা জনালোঁ।
For generalizations, use non-gendered noun forms (লোকসকল, ব্যক্তিসকল, শিক্ষাৰ্থীসকল).
Do not use gendered pronouns (পুৰুষ, মহিলা, সি, তাই, তাক) in generic references. Instead:
Rewrite to use the second or third person (আপুনি or কোনো ব্যক্তি).
Avoid gender specific pronouns. Use উক্ত দস্তাবেজ/নথিপত্ৰ/নথি instead of তেওঁৰ দস্তাবেজ/ তাইৰ নথিপত্ৰ/ তেখেতৰ নথি.
Refer to a person's role (পাঠক, কৰ্মচাৰী, গ্ৰাহক, ক্লাইণ্ট).
Use মানুহ or ব্যক্তি.
If the user has the appropriate rights, he can set other users' passwords. -> A user with the appropriate rights can set other users' passwords.

To call someone, select his name, select Make a phone call, and then select his number. -> To call someone, select the person's name, select Make a phone call, and then choose the number you'd like to dial.
In Assamese, if you cannot write around the problem, use a respectful pronoun (তেওঁ/তেওঁলোক) in generic references. Do not use constructions like সি/তাই.
When you write about a real person, use the pronouns that the person prefers. Gendered pronouns (তেওঁ, তেখেত, তেওঁৰ, তেখেতৰ) are fine for real people who use them themselves.
Do not use words that imply pity, such as লেঙেৰা/ অন্ধ / বধিৰ / কলা or ৰুগীয়া/ সমস্যাগ্ৰস্ত.
Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
handicapped -> person with a disability; প্ৰতিবন্ধী -> বিশেষভাৱে সক্ষম ব্যক্তি
normal person; healthy person -> person without a disability; সাধাৰণ ব্যক্তি; সুস্থ ব্যক্তি -> অক্ষমতা নথকা ব্যক্তি
Use generic verbs that apply to all input methods and devices. In procedures and instructions, avoid verbs that make no sense with alternative input methods.
Click -> Select; ক্লিক কৰক -> বাছনি কৰক
Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Aim for one verb per sentence. Read text aloud and imagine it spoken by a screen reader.
Spell out words like আৰু, লগতে, বিষয়ে. Screen readers can misread text with special characters like &, + and ~.
Abbreviate some words in the UI (mainly button or option names) only for lack of space.
Form abbreviations by taking the first letter of the word followed by a full stop, or by taking the first letter or first syllable of the word, for example ইণ্টা. for ইণ্টাৰনেট.
en Profile -> প্ৰ’ফা.
en Insert -> আন্তঃস.
en Layout -> লেআউ.
বিশেষ দ্ৰষ্টব্য -> বি.দ্ৰ.

ধাতু -> ধা.
বিশেষ্য -> বি.
সৰ্বনাম -> সৰ্ব.
স্ত্ৰীলিঙ্গ -> স্ত্ৰী.
সহকাৰী -> সহঃ
Use a non-breaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) in any abbreviation.
If non-breaking spaces cannot be used, in Help files for example, write these abbreviations without a space, so one letter does not move to the next line.
Besides common measurements such as km, m, cm, mm, use these abbreviations in the UI and in technical documentation.
Gigabyte: GB, জি.বি.; example মোৰ ম’বাইলত 1 জি.বি. মেম’ৰী আছে৷
Gigabit: GBit, জি.বিট্
Kilobyte: KB, কে.বি.; example মই 256 কে.বি. ডাউনল’ড কৰিলোঁ৷
Acronyms are made of the initial letters of major parts of a compound term: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Form them by taking the first letter of each word.
Do not localize or spell out these commonly understood acronyms: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization), PDF, IP, GPS.
Treat product names and non-translated feature names as proper nouns.
en Windows Mail shares your Internet Connection settings with Microsoft Edge -> Windows Mail-এ আপোনাৰ ইণ্টাৰনেট সংযোগ ছেটিংছ Microsoft Edge-ৰ সৈতে ভাগ-বতৰা কৰে৷
en Website addresses will be sent to Microsoft -> ৱেবছাইট ঠিকনা Microsoft-লৈ প্ৰেৰণ কৰা হ’ব৷
Translated feature names take a definite or indefinite article; they are not proper names.
en Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse -> মাউচেৰে ইয়াৰ ওপৰেৰে হ'ভাৰিং কৰি কোনো উইণ্ড' সক্ৰিয় কৰক
en Select a location closest to your office. -> আপোনাৰ অফিচৰ কাষৰ কোনো অৱস্থান চয়ন কৰক৷
For an English loan word, check motivation, analogy and frequency.
English borrowed terms always take the in English, but Assamese uses no articles: The Homepage -> মুখ্যপৃষ্ঠা
Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone and style.
en As <product> gains features, there is a risk that older content may not display correctly.: এই কম্পিউটাৰটোত এই সুবিধা নথকাৰ কাৰণে ফাইলটো খুলিব নোৱাৰে৷ -> যদি এই সুবিধা দুটা আপোনাৰ কম্পিউটাৰত নাই, তেন্তে নতুন ফাইলটো ইয়াত খোল নাখাব৷
Gender is not grammatical in Assamese. Only animate subjects distinguish gender. Sex indicates gender, marked by qualifying terms, different words, or a suffix.
Qualifying terms for male and female are মতা and মাইকী.
Add -ঈ to a masculine form ending with a consonant: পগলা "mad man", পাগলী "mad woman".
Add -নী to masculine ending words: কলিতা "man of Kalita caste", কলিতানী "woman of Kalita caste".
Use language that is as neutral as possible. Do not stress gender differences or reinforce stereotypical distinctions. Apply the neutral approach to scenarios, comparisons, examples, illustrations and metaphors.
Balance roles and functions between men and women: active versus passive, leading versus secondary, technical versus non-technical. Base scenarios, pictures, metaphors and comparisons on areas and attributes common to both genders.
Instead of phrases that mention the two genders separately, use a general term that includes both, such as people, users, persons.
Avoid sentences that refer to a single person whose gender is unknown. Rewrite to make the subject plural.
When a reference to a single person is impossible to avoid, do not use he or she, him or her, his or hers.
Avoid slashes to combine both genders, except as noted below.
Use a neutral noun: ব্যক্তি, নেতা, দলপতি, পাকৈত, কৰ্মচাৰী, ব্যৱহাৰকৰ্তা, তেওঁ, তেখেত.
Write gender separately only in exceptional cases such as License Terms, and sometimes in tables (headers or column/row titles). If you cannot write around the problem, use a respectful pronoun (তেওঁ/তেওঁলোক) in generic references. Do not use constructions like সি/তাই.
Assamese uses postpositions where English uses prepositions. Postpositions follow the possessive case form of the noun or pronoun.
for me -> মোৰ বাবে or মোৰ কাৰণে
on the table -> মেজৰ ওপৰত
Common postpositions: পৰা, দ্বাৰা, হতুৱাই, সৈতে, যোগেদি, কাৰণে, বাবে, নিমিত্তে, তলত, ওপৰত, পাছত, নিচিনা, দৰে ইত্যাদি ৷

en from the Internet -> ইণ্টাৰনেটৰপৰা
en on the Web -> ৱেবত
en on a web site -> ৱেবছাইটত
en on a web page -> ৱেবৰ পৃষ্ঠাত
Use prepositions correctly. Do not omit them or change word order under English influence.
Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable.
en old Developers can go to the application management site to find the apps for which they are looking. -> en new Developers can go to the application management site to find the apps they are looking for.
The concept of prepositions does not exist in Assamese.
Assamese pronouns are personal, demonstrative, relative, indefinite, interrogative, possessive and reflexive. Function in the sentence decides the pronoun.
There are three persons: first, second and third.
1st (প্ৰথম পুৰুষ): I (মই), We (আমি)
2nd (দ্বিতীয় পুৰুষ): You (তই), You (তহঁত)
2nd respected form: You (তুমি), You (তোমালোক)
3rd (তৃতীয় পুৰুষ): He/she (সি, তাই), They (সিঁহত)
3rd respected form: He/she (আপুনি), They (আপোনালোক)
Address the user directly with first- and second-person pronouns like you. Avoid third-person references such as user.
en old Users can change when new updates get installed. -> en new You can change when new updates get installed.
en old This setting provides users with the best display appearance. -> en new Choose one of these schemes or make your own.
Use You (আপুনি), Your (আপোনাৰ) and My (মোৰ) wherever possible.
You has three forms by status or rank: আপুনি (hon.), তুমি (equal), তই (inferior and intimate). Use আপুনি (hon.) in Assamese voice wherever needed.

, separates several names or items written consecutively, and marks short pauses.
! follows an interjection or exclamation to indicate strong feeling.
? marks interrogation.
; binds two sentences more closely than a full stop.
: shows that what follows proves, clarifies, explains or enumerates elements of what came before.
’ marks omissions.
“” denote speech or a quotation.
‘ ’ denote speech or a quotation.
( ) contain optional or additional material that could be removed without destroying the meaning.
{ } mark repeated or joined lines in poetry and music; in mathematics they delimit sets.
[ ] enclose explanatory or missing material, especially in quoted text.
< > enclose highlighted material.
- joins words.
_ indicates a sudden break in thought, and that something follows.
... indicates a pause in speech or an unfinished thought; at the end of a sentence it indicates a trailing off into silence.
The sign of bulleted lists is the same as in English.
Use the comma mainly to separate things, and to separate items in lists. Do not use it before the final conjunction.
মানুহজনে ক’লে, তেওঁ তাক ঘৰত দেখি আহিছে৷
আমাৰ ঘৰলৈ ৰাম, হৰি, যদু আৰু মধুও আহিব
Colon, syntactical-deductive: introduces the logical consequence or effect of a fact stated before. অসমৰ বানপানী সমস্যা এটা ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় সমস্যা : মুখ্যমন্ত্ৰী
Colon, syntactical-descriptive: introduces a description, in particular the elements of a set. মূল্য : পাঁচ টকা
Do not use the colon in this case. en Man proposes: God disposes. -> মানুহে প্ৰস্তাৱ দিয়ে কিন্তু ভগৱানে নিষ্পত্তি কৰে৷. Assamese uses the word কিন্তু against the colon.
In Assamese dashes join words: সু-খবৰ, ভাত-পানী
The hyphen divides words between syllables, links parts of a compound word, and connects the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form.
In Assamese hyphens indicate a sudden break in thought and that something follows: তুমি ভালদৰে পঢ়া-শুনা কৰা – এয়ে মোৰ কামনা।
En dash: minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. In English typography it expresses a range of values or a distance. Assamese also uses it for a range of values or a distance. 6–10 years, read as "six to ten years."
Em dash: use only to emphasize an isolated element or introduce an element that is not essential to the meaning. It sets off abrupt parenthetical elements. The tea—with cardamom and other spices—was delicious and fragrant.
In Assamese the em dash is not used in any sentences.
Ellipsis: the triple-dot … marks omission from a sentence, a pause in speech, an unfinished thought, or a trailing off into silence at the end of a sentence. জীৱন নদীৰ দুটি পাৰে...
Period: use ৷ at the end of a statement. No space between the last letter and the period. One space between the period and the first letter of the next sentence.
আপুনি নিৰ্দিষ্ট কৰি থোৱা নতুন প্ৰিণ্টাৰ ছেটিংছটোৱে প্ৰভাৱ ল'ব পৰা নাই৷ প্ৰিণ্টাৰ ড্ৰাইভাৰটো স্থাপন বা পুনৰ স্থাপন কৰক৷
When a statement ends with a question, end the sentence with ?. ইয়াৰ পৰিৱৰ্তে আপুনি ফ'ল্ডাৰত সংৰক্ষণ কৰিবলৈ বিচাৰে নেকি?
Quote somebody's speech without change or modification in a double inverted comma. মানুহজনে ক’লে, "মই আজি কামলৈ নাযাওঁ৷"
Put a quoted phrase inside an already quoted sentence in single inverted commas. এজনে আলোচনা প্ৰসংগত লিখিছে, “মাধৱ কন্দলি প্ৰাকশঙ্কৰী কবি আছিল৷ শঙ্কৰদেৱে লিখা ‘পূৰ্ব কবি অপ্ৰমাদী মাধৱ কন্দলিআদি’ কথাষাৰেই তাৰ প্ৰমাণ৷”
Put names of plays or books in single inverted commas. ‘ৰাম বিজয়’ শঙ্কৰদেৱে ৰচনা কৰিছিল৷
Parentheses (চন্দ্ৰ বন্ধনী) mark off explanatory or qualifying remarks. No space between the parentheses and the text inside them, in English and in Assamese. পণ্ডিতমন্য (যি নিজকে পণ্ডিত বুলি ভাবে)
Assamese verbs inflect in person (1st, 2nd, 3rd), in degrees of politeness (intimate, familiar, respectful), and in tense (past, present, future).
Present tense adds o, e, e- to the stem.
1st: -o, মই কৰোঁ
2nd: -e, সি/তাই কৰে
respectful: -ā, তুমি কৰা
3rd: -e, সিঁহতে কৰে
Past tense is for recent past actions. It adds -ilo, -isil, -isil to the stem.
1st: -(i)lo, মই কৰিছিলোঁ
2nd: -(i)sil, সি/তাই কৰিছিল
respectful: -ā, তুমি কৰিছিলা
3rd: (i)sil, সিঁহতে কৰিছিল
respectful: -(i)le, আপুনি কৰিছিল
Continuous tenses are for actions taking place now or lasting for a time in the past. They match the English -ing forms.
Present continuous, 1st: -o, মই কৰি আছোঁ
Present continuous, 2nd: -e, সি/তাই কৰি আছে
Present continuous, 3rd: -e, সিঁহতে কৰি আছে
Past continuous, 1st: -(i)lo, মই কৰি আছিলোঁ
Past continuous, 2nd: -(i)sil, সি/তাই কৰি আছিল
Past continuous, 3rd: -(i)sil, সিঁহতে কৰি আছিল
Future tense adds -m and -bo to the stem.
1st: -(i)m, মই কৰিম
2nd: -bo, সি/তাই কৰিব
respectful: -(i)bā, তুমি কৰিবা
3rd: -bo, সিঁহতে কৰিব
respectful: -(i)ba, আপুনি কৰিব
An English verb can serve as a loan word. Loan words follow the syntactic and morphological rules of Assamese. Do not translate loan word verbs.
en chat -> চাট কৰক, চাট কৰিছে, চাট কৰি আছে
en debug -> ডিবাগ কৰক, ডিবাগ কৰিছে, ডিবাগ কৰি আছে
Use simple tenses. The simple present is easiest to understand. Avoid future tense unless the event really happens in the future and the simple present does not work. Use simple past for events that already happened.
en old After you are finished installing the tool, the icon will appear on your desktop. [are finished is present perfect] -> en new After you finish installing the tool, the icon appears on your desktop. [finish is simple present]
Use the normal present and the present perfect tense for Assamese.
en After you are finished installing the tool, the icon will appear on your desktop.: আপুনি এই সঁজুলিক ইনষ্টল কৰি থোৱাৰ পিছত, আইকনটো আপোনাৰ ডেস্কটপত প্ৰকট হ’ব৷ -> আপুনি এই সঁজুলিটো ইনষ্টল কৰাৰ পিছত, আইকনটো আপোনাৰ ডেস্কটপত প্ৰকট হয়৷
Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt the user to act or tell the user that the computer must reboot.
Make the translation natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
en Something went wrong. -> কিবা ভুল হৈছে।
en Not enough memory to process this command. -> এই আদেশটোক প্ৰক্ৰিয়া কৰিবলৈ পৰ্যাপ্ত মেম’ৰী নাই৷
Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate the US strings as they appear.
Assamese has no specific style for error messages. The main principles are clarity, comprehensibility and consistency.
en Can't rename "Pictures" because a file or folder with that name already exists -> সেই নামটোৰ সৈতে ইতিমধ্যে এটা ফাইল বা ফ’ল্ডাৰ থকাৰ কাৰণে “চিত্ৰসমূহ”ৰ পুনৰ নাম দিব নোৱাৰে
US English error messages are occasionally inconsistent. Use one standard Assamese phrase for messages with the same meaning and purpose. Use another wording only when it works better in context.
en Cannot …, Could not … -> ...নোৱাৰে৷; example ফাইলটো বিচাৰি পাব নোৱাৰে৷; both English sentences mean the same.
en Failed to …, Failure of … -> ...বিফল হৈছে৷; example সংযোগ কৰাত বিফল হৈছে৷
en Cannot find …, Could not find …, Unable to find …, Unable to locate … -> ...বিচাৰিব নোৱাৰে৷; example ড্ৰাইভাৰ চফ্টৱেৰ বিচাৰিব নোৱাৰে৷
en Not enough memory, Insufficient memory, There is not enough memory, There is not enough memory available -> পৰ্যাপ্ত মেম’ৰী নাই৷; example ছিষ্টেমত পৰ্যাপ্ত মেম’ৰী নাই৷
en .. is not available, .. is unavailable -> ...উপলব্ধ নহয়৷; example নিৰ্দেশটো উপলব্ধ নহয়৷
With placeholders, find out what will replace the placeholder, so the sentence stays grammatical.
%d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>.
"Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."
"INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."
If adjectives and nouns agree and the noun is a placeholder, you need to know the exact string to inflect a preceding adjective. Most source strings are already worded to avoid this.
If the language has subject-verb agreement, reword the translation to avoid an ungrammatical sentence.
en Replace invalid %s? (user sees Replace invalid data?, Replace invalid file?) -> অবৈধ %s পুনঃস্থাপন কৰিবনে?
en %s already exists (user sees File already exists, Name already exists) -> %s ইতিমধ্যে মজুত আছে
en %s is now set as your personal contact. (user sees Regina is now set as your personal contact, Mr. Kim is now set as your personal contact) -> %s এতিয়া আপোনাৰ ব্যক্তিগত সম্পৰ্কৰ ৰূপত ছেট কৰা হৈছে
en %s stopped working and was closed (user sees The application stopped working and was closed, The program stopped working and was closed) -> %s-এ কাম কৰা বন্ধ কৰিছিল আৰু বন্ধ কৰা হ’ল
Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes are keyboard shortcuts.
Examples: New, Cancel, Options.
The Assamese keyboard layout is phonetic: the characters follow the letters of the English keyboard.
Two layouts exist: Phonetic keyboard and Inscript keyboard. Phonetic is popular among users.
Inscript is available and supported by the operating system, but most software supports the Phonetic keyboard (Sabdalipi phonetic keyboard).
If the operating system treats Inscript as standard, localize it for consistency. Otherwise do not, because phonetic keyboards are used widely.
Suggestion: do not localize, considering phonetic keyboards; localize if InScript is the system standard. Decide by which of the two is standard.
Slim characters, such as I, l, t, r, f, can be used as keyboard shortcuts: no. Assamese characters cannot be termed slim compared to the Roman ones.
Characters with down strokes, such as g, j, y, p, q, can be used as keyboard shortcuts: yes. Most Assamese characters are written with a down stroke, for example গ, দ, ন, প, ল, হ, and গ, দ, ন, প, ল, হ are valid keyboard shortcut characters for use.
Extended characters can be used as keyboard shortcuts: no. Assamese conjuncts, which combine two consonants, cannot be used as keyboard shortcuts.
