Tamil (India) style guide

Voice

  • Write short, easy-to-read sentences.
  • Avoid passive voice.
  • Be pleasant. Make explanations individualized and enjoyable to read.
  • Avoid slang. Be careful with colloquialisms. A conversational tone is fine, but stay professional.
  • Be warm and relaxed: natural, less formal, grounded in honest conversation.
  • Be crisp and clear: to the point. Write for scanning first, reading second.
  • Be ready to lend a hand: anticipate real needs, offer the right information at the right time.
  • Choose the right words for the audience: technical terms for technical audiences, common words and phrases for consumers.
  • Keep the general style clear, friendly, and concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical language.
  • Free to pick non-standard translations when they keep the intent of the source.
  • Do not translate literally. Consider the intent of the text and what the customer needs to complete the task.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms, and product names. Do not use different target terms for already approved terms.
  • Use short, simple, everyday words.
  • en App: use app instead of application or program.
  • en Pick, choose: use pick in more fun, less formal or light-weight situations (pick a color, not choose a color) and choose for more formal situations. Do not use select unless the UI requires it.
  • en Drive: use for general reference to any drive type. Use the specific drive type if necessary.
  • en Get: fine as a synonym for obtain or come into possession of. Avoid for other general meanings.
  • en Info: use in most situations unless information fits the context better. Use info when you point the reader elsewhere (for more info, see <link>).
  • en PC: use for personal computing devices. Use computer for situations about PCs and Macs.
  • en You: address the user as you, directly or indirectly, with first- and second-person pronouns. Avoid third-person references such as user.
  • en E.g. -> எ.கா Use for எடுத்துக்காட்டு.

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language: straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, several clear words over one complicated term.
  • Be mindful when you refer to parts of the world. Do not name politically disputed cities, countries, or regions in examples. Use equivalent references: do not mix countries with states or continents.
  • In text and images, represent diverse perspectives and circumstances. Show a variety of people in a wide variety of professions, educational settings, locales, and economic settings.
  • Do not generalize or stereotype people by region, culture, age, or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names that reflect a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Do not use profane or derogatory terms.
  • Do not use slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • Do not use terms carrying unconscious racial bias, or terms associated with military actions, politics, or controversial historical events and eras.
  • en master/slave -> primary/subordinate; தலைமை/அடிமை -> முதன்மை/துணை நிலை
  • en hang -> stop responding; பதிலளிக்காதே -> பதிலளிப்பதை நிறுத்தவும்
  • en guru -> expert; வித்தகர் -> நிபுணர்
  • en pow wow -> meeting; அரட்டையடித்தல் -> கலந்துரையாடல்
  • en guys; ladies and gentlemen -> colleagues; everyone; all; நண்பர்களே, நண்பிகளே, பெரியோர்களே -> சக பணியாளர்கள்; அனைவருக்கும்;
  • en brown bag session -> lunch and learn; learning session; சாப்பாட்டு நேரம் -> உணவு இடைவேளை
  • en mother or father -> parent; அப்பா அல்லது அம்மா -> பெற்றோர்

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives. Avoid compounds containing gender-specific terms (அவன், அவள்).
  • ஆண் -> நபர் (generic term for all genders)
  • பெண் -> நபர் (generic term for all genders)
  • அவன் -> அவர் (generic term for all genders)
  • அவள் -> அவர் (generic term for all genders)
  • இவன் -> இவர் (generic term for all genders)
  • இவள் -> இவர் (generic term for all genders)
  • For generalization, use plural noun forms: மக்கள், தனிநபர், மாணவர்கள், தலைவர்கள்.
  • Do not use gendered pronouns (அவன், அவள், அவனுடைய, அவளுடைய) in generic references. Instead:
  • Rewrite to use the second or third person: நீங்கள் அல்லது அவர்
  • Rewrite the sentence to have a plural noun and pronoun.
  • Use articles instead of a pronoun: அந்த ஆவணம் instead of அவருடைய ஆவணம்
  • Refer to a person's role: வாசிப்பாளர், பணியாளர், வாடிக்கையாளர், உரிமையாளர்
  • Use தனிநபர்.
  • en A user with the appropriate rights can set other users' passwords. -> முறையான உரிமைகளைக் கொண்ட ஒரு பயனர், மற்ற பயனர்களின் கடவுச்சொற்களை அமைக்கலாம்.; not en If the user has the appropriate rights, he can set other users' passwords. -> ஒரு பயனர் முறையான உரிமைகளைக் கொண்டிருந்தால், அவனால் மற்ற பயனர்களின் கடவுச்சொற்களை அமைக்க முடியும்.
  • en Developers need access to servers in their development environments, but they don't need access to the servers in Azure. -> டெவலப்பர்களுக்கு அவர்களின் மேம்பாட்டு சூழல்களில் உள்ள சேவையகங்களுக்கான அணுகல் தேவை, எனினும் அவர்களுக்கு Azure இல் உள்ள சேவையகங்களுக்கான அணுகல் தேவையில்லை.; not en A developer needs access to servers in his development environment, but he doesn't need access to the servers in Azure. -> ஒரு டெவெலப்பருக்கு அவரது மேம்பாட்டு சூழலில் உள்ள சேவையகங்களுக்கான அணுகல் தேவை, ஆனால் அவனுக்கு Azure இல் உள்ள சேவையகங்களுக்கான அணுகல் தேவையில்லை.
  • en To call someone, select the person's name, select Make a phone call, and then choose the number you'd like to dial. -> ஒருவரை அழைக்க, அவரின் பெயரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து, தொலைபேசி தேர்ந்தெடுத்து, பின்னர் நீங்கள் டயல் செய்ய விரும்பும் எண்ணைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கவும்.; not en To call someone, select his name, select Make a phone call, and then select his number. -> ஒருவனை அழைக்க, அவன் பெயரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து, தொலைபேசி அழைப்பைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கவும், பின்னர் அவன் நம்பரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கவும்.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities. Do not use words that imply pity, such as பார்வையற்றவர். Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
  • en handicapped -> person with a disability; ஊனமுற்றோர் -> மாற்றுத்திறனாளி
  • en normal person; healthy person -> person without a disability; ஆரோக்கியமானவர் -> மாற்றுத்திறனாளி அல்லாதவர்
  • Use generic verbs that apply to all input methods and devices. In procedures and instructions, avoid verbs that do not make sense with alternative input methods.
  • en Click -> Select; கிளிக் செய்யவும் -> தேர்ந்தெடுக்கவும்
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Aim for one verb per sentence. Read text aloud and imagine a screen reader speaking it.
  • Spell out words like மற்றும், கூடுதலாக, மேலும், தோராயமாக. Screen readers can misread special characters like &, +, ~.
  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Tamil-speaking markets. Double-check with the appropriate resources.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviations are not recommended in Tamil. Abbreviate UI words (mainly button or option names) only for lack of space.
  • எடுத்துக்காட்டு -> எ.கா. or எ.டு.
  • உதாரணம் -> உ.ம்
  • பக்கம் -> ப. or பக்.
  • வரிசை எண் -> வ.எண்
  • தமிழ்நாடு -> த.நா.

Acronyms

  • Acronyms are words made from the initial letters of major parts of a compound term. Examples: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • Tamil has no genuine acronym. Tamil uses the transliterated form of the corresponding English acronym.
  • Many abbreviations and acronyms are standardized and stay untranslated. Follow one with its full English spelling only if it needs explaining to speakers of a different language. For a common acronym, the full form only confuses users, so use the acronym alone.
  • Do not localize or spell out: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization).
  • Do not add a generic term after an acronym or abbreviation if one of its letters stands for that term. Correct it in the localized version even if the source has it.
  • Not: HTML language, TCP/IP-Protocol, PIN Number

Adjectives

  • Adjectives give attributes to nouns and extend their definitions.
  • en non-member -> உறுப்பினர் இல்லாதவர்
  • en undefined -> வரையறுக்கப்படாதவை
  • en invisible -> புலனாகாத
  • en unavailable -> கிடைக்காத
  • Translate or ignore possessive adjectives according to context.
  • en Input your password. -> கடவுச்சொல்லை உள்ளிடவும். (possessive ignored)
  • en Do you want to delete the files from your hard disk? -> உங்கள் நிலைவட்டில் உள்ள கோப்புகளை நீக்க விரும்புகிறீர்களா? (possessive used)

Articles

  • Translate A, An, The mostly as ஒரு, ஓர். Translating articles is not necessary in all circumstances. Translate them wisely.
  • en An apple was eaten by the baby -> ஆப்பிளை குழந்தை தின்றது (article kept in the translation)
  • Sandhi grammar is a literary convention, optional in translation. It usually does not affect meaning or intent, and it can cut character count in button strings and UI. Decide by context. Example: படத்தைப் பதிவிறக்கம் செய்யவும் can be படத்தை பதிவிறக்கம் செய்யவும்.
  • Use unlocalized product names and non-translated feature names without definite or indefinite articles, as in English.
  • en What's new in Microsoft 365? -> Microsoft 365 -இல் புதிது என்ன?
  • Some feature names are localized or transliterated. en Microsoft Defender Application Guard -> Microsoft Defender பயன்பாட்டுப் பாதுகாப்பான்
  • For an English loan word already in use, check motivation (does the English word integrate straightforwardly into the Tamil noun class system; treat names, trademarks, and product names as proper nouns), analogy (is there an equivalent Tamil term whose article could be used), and frequency (which article is most common in other technical documentation).
  • Check approved terminology to confirm a new loan word and its article.
  • en Menu -> மெனு (transliterated: no direct Tamil equivalent). Similar terms: Click, Slide, Audio, Video, Multimedia.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds.
  • Compounding forms words in Tamil. Nouns combine freely with other nouns.
  • Noun-noun: சேவையகம் (Server) + சான்றிதழ் (Certificate) = சேவையகச் சான்றிதழ் (Server Certificate)
  • Noun-noun: தரவு (Data) + அடித்தளம் (Base) = தரவுத்தளம் (Database)
  • Noun-noun: வலை (Web) + இடம் (Site) = வலைத்தளம் (Website)
  • Verb-noun: கட (Pass) + சொல் (Word) = கடவுச்சொல் (Password)
  • Noun-verb: பக்கம் (Page) + முறி (Break) = பக்க முறிப்பு (Page Break)
  • Product names are trademarked and stay unchanged. Add to a product or component name with a hyphen, or build a periphrastic construction.
  • en Windows password -> Windows கடவுச்சொல்
  • en Microsoft Word document -> Microsoft Word ஆவணம்
  • en Microsoft SQL Server Database -> Microsoft SQL Server தரவுத்தளம்

Conjunctions

  • Use conjunctions to convey a conversational tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone and style.
  • en Because of these features in the product, old content will not be displayed clearly.: தயாரிப்பிலுள்ள இந்த அம்சங்கள் காரணமாக, பழைய உள்ளடக்கம் சரியாக தெரியாது. -> இந்தத் தயாரிப்பு அம்சங்களைப் பெறுகின்ற பட்சத்தில், பழைய உள்ளடக்கம் சரியாக காட்சிப்படுத்தாமல் போகக்கூடிய ஆபத்து உள்ளது.
  • en This is not suitable to Windows 11, however let us see it.: இது Windows 11 க்குப் பொருத்தமில்லை, எனினும் அதைப் பார்ப்போம். -> இது Windows 11 க்குப் பொருத்தமில்லாமல் இருந்தாலும் கூட, அதைப்பற்றிப் பார்ப்போம்.
  • en Though this feature is in activation, the website is not updated.: இந்த அம்சம் இயக்கத்திலுள்ளது. ஆனால் வலைத்தளம் புதுப்பிக்கப்படவில்லை. -> இந்த அம்சம் இயக்கத்தில் இருந்தும், வலைத்தளம் புதுப்பிக்கப்படவில்லை.

Gender

  • Instead of naming the two genders separately, use a general term that includes both: பயனர், நபர், பணியாளர்கள்.
  • Genders used in Tamil: அவன், அவள், அது. Avoid அவன் and அவள்.
  • Neutral word to avoid gender differences: அவர்

Genitive

  • Form genitives by adding suffixes to the end of a noun: உடைய, இதனுடைய, இனுடைய
  • என்னுடைய புத்தகம் (My book)
  • For shorter translation and better readability, use the uncomplicated forms இதன், அதன், எனது.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Tamil colloquialism unless it is a perfect and natural fit for that context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, but only if the meaning is an integral part of the text.
  • If the colloquialism can be omitted without affecting meaning, omit it.
  • en Hi -> ஹாய்
  • en Hello -> ஹலோ/வணக்கம்

Modifiers

  • Modifiers stress the verb or the nature of the word. Use them as in English.

Nouns

  • Integrate English loan words into the Tamil noun class system.
  • en Delete it from server. -> சேவையகத்தில் இருந்து இதை நீக்கு
  • en Enter a password to log into the server -> சேவையகத்திற்குள் கடவுச்சொல்லை உள்ளீடு
  • en DNS cannot resolve the server IP address -> சேவையகம் IP முகவரியை DNS தீர்வு செய்யாது
  • en Verify the name of the server's certificate -> சேவையகத்தின் சான்றிதழ் பெயரைச் சரிபார்
  • Most technical words are translated into Tamil, and loan words function as Tamil words, so inflection raises no problem. A few exceptions exist.
  • en Use this theme -> இந்த தீம்-ஐப் பயன்படுத்து; not இந்த தீமை பயன்படுத்து. Fix such cases by changing the translation of the term.
  • Form the plural by adding கள் at the end of the word, like s in English. The last letter or letters of the word change in the same places. For time periods, a plural can be translated as a singular.
  • en Client—Clients -> பயனகம் - பயனகங்கள்
  • en Website—Websites -> வலைதளம் - வலைதளங்கள்
  • en Download—Downloads -> பதிவிறக்கம் - பதிவிறக்கங்கள்
  • en Proxys -> பதிலி - பதிலிகள்
  • en Administrators -> நிர்வாகி - நிர்வாகிகள்
  • en Ten hours drive -> பத்து மணிநேர வாகன ஓட்டம்

Prepositions

  • Use prepositions properly. Do not omit them or change word order under English influence.
  • Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable and conveys a casual, conversational tone.
  • en Migrate from ... -> இதிலிருந்து இடம்பெயர் ..
  • en import to ... -> இதற்கு இறக்கு ...
  • en upgrade to ... -> இதற்கு மேம்படுத்து ...
  • en ... in the toolbar -> கருவிப்பட்டியில் ...
  • en ... on the Internet -> இணையத்தில் ...

Pronouns

  • Use pronouns equivalent to the source. Tamil pronouns include personal, indefinite, relative, and reciprocal or reflexive pronouns.
  • en He -> அவர்; not அவன்
  • en She -> அவர்; not அவள்
  • en We -> நாம்/நாங்கள்
  • en It -> அது
  • en They -> அவை/அவர்கள்
  • en You -> நீங்கள்/உங்கள்; not நீ/உனக்கு

Punctuation

  • Tamil follows the general punctuation characters and rules that apply to English.
  • Comma: separates several names or items written consecutively, and marks short pauses.
  • நீங்கள் வெளியிட்டிருந்த நகைச்சுவைத் துணுக்குகளைப் படித்தேன், ரசித்தேன், சிரித்தேன்.
  • Colon : shows that what follows proves, clarifies, explains, or enumerates. Do not use colons in inappropriate places.
  • கல்வி அமைச்சர்: எல்லாப் பள்ளிகளுக்கும் கணினி வழங்கப்படும்.
  • English uses three dash characters. Tamil uses only the hyphen in all places.
  • Hyphen: divides words between syllables, links parts of a compound word, and connects the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form. Use a hyphen to connect a loan word that needs a suffix.
  • அவன் முடிவெடுத்தான் - எந்த நிலையிலும் தன் பெற்றோரின் பணத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தக்கூடாது என்று.
  • en Loading help from Microsoft Office Online -> Microsoft Office Online -இலிருந்து உதவியை ஏற்றுகிறது
  • en Pages: 1-10 -> பக்கங்கள்: 1-10
  • Ellipses mark an omission of words needed to complete the construction or meaning. Example: 1, 2, 3…
  • Period: use as in English, at the end of declarative sentences and complete statements, and after many abbreviations.
  • அவன் சென்னைக்கு வந்தான்.
  • த.இ.ப – தமிழ் இணைய பல்கலைக்கழகம்
  • Quotation marks: software references in the source may be surrounded by English quotation marks. The same applies to Tamil. “” and ‘’ both denote speech or a quotation.
  • இன்று “பொங்கல் திருநாள்”
  • Parentheses: no space between the parentheses and the text inside, as in English. Parentheses can hold an explanation related to the message but not to the sentence.
  • அன்னி வூட் பெசண்ட் (அக்டோபர் 1, 1847 – செப்டம்பர் 20, 1933) பெண் விடுதலைக்காகப் போராடியவர், எழுத்தாளர், பேச்சாளர். (birth and death dates in parentheses)

Sentence fragments

  • Use sentence fragments to convey a conversational tone. Use them whenever possible: they are short and to the point.
  • en long form Use the following steps. -> en fragment Here's how
  • en Use the following steps: long form இதைச் செய்வதற்கு பின்வரும் படிகளைப் பயன்படுத்தவும் -> fragment செய்வது எப்படி: பின்வரும் படிகளைப் பயன்படுத்தவும்
  • en Click this link to see details: long form விபரங்களைக் காண இந்த இணைப்பைக் கிளிக் செய்யவும் -> fragment விபரங்களுக்கு: இணைப்பைக் கிளிக் செய்யவும்
  • en Following examples for this:: long form இவற்றுக்கான எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள் வருமாறு: -> fragment எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள்:

Subjunctive

  • Tamil usually has no separate subjunctive forms.

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • Follow the available Tamil equivalent for a symbol.
  • en To continue, select ü -> தொடர்வதற்கு ü ஐத் தேர்ந்தெடுங்கள்
  • Use non-breaking spaces whenever regular spacing is not possible or not usable, such as in html pages.
  • Normal usage: Microsoft மொழி இடைமுகத் தொகுப்பு
  • HTML page: Microsoft&nbsp;மொழி&nbsp;இடைமுகத்&nbsp;தொகுப்பு, where &nbsp; is the non-breaking space.

Verbs

  • Use simple tenses. Prefer the simple present. Avoid future tense unless something really happens in the future and the simple present does not apply. Use simple past for events that already happened.
  • Translate verbs consistently by the existing grammar rules. Verbs usually come at the end of the sentence.
  • en Delete a file? -> கோப்பை நீக்க வேண்டுமா?
  • en Print a file -> கோப்பை அச்சிடு
  • English expresses continuous operations with a gerund. Follow the English context. These usually appear as task titles.
  • en Connecting to a network -> பிணையத்துடன் இணைத்தல்; not பிணையத்துடன் இணைக்கிறது

Localization considerations

  • Adapt translated text to the local language, customs, and standards.
  • Give the language the look and feel of a product originally written in Tamil, with idiomatic syntax and terminology, and keep terminology consistent.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are often trademarked and are rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too (IntelliSense™).
  • Do not translate product, feature, or application names unless that product or feature is localized with its name.
  • Version numbers always contain a period (Version 4.2).
  • en Version 4.2 -> பதிப்பு 4.2
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but technically they are not the same.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information. Check approved terminology for the correct translations.

Error messages

  • Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or state that a reboot is required.
  • Make the target translation natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • en Something went wrong. -> ஏதோ தவறாகிவிட்டது
  • en Not enough memory to process this command. -> இந்தக் கட்டளையை இயக்கப் போதுமான நினைவகம் இல்லை.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate as in the source.
  • Use the target phrases below for standard phrases. Other wordings are fine when they work better in context.
  • en Cannot …, Could not … -> ... முடியாது, முடியவில்லை; examples File cannot be found, File could not be found. These constructions express inability to affect an outcome.
  • en Failed to …, Failure of … -> ... தோல்வியுற்றது; examples Failed to connect, Failed of connect
  • en Cannot find …, Could not find …, Unable to find …, Unable to locate … -> ...கண்டறிய முடியவில்லை; examples Cannot find driver software, Could not find driver software, Unable to find driver software, Unable to locate driver software
  • en Not enough memory, Insufficient memory, There is not enough memory, There is not enough memory available -> போதுமான நினைவகம் இல்லை; examples No sufficient memory on disk, Not enough memory on disk, No enough memory is available on disk
  • en ... is not available, ... is unavailable -> ... கிடைக்கவில்லை; examples ... enough space is not available, ... enough space is unavailable
  • Find out what replaces a placeholder before translating, so the sentence stays grammatical.
  • %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>.
  • Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d! means Checking Web <number> of <number>.
  • INI file "%1!-.200s!" section means INI file "<string>" section.
  • en Replace invalid %s? (user sees Replace invalid data?, Replace invalid file?) -> செல்லாத %s ஐ இடமாற்றவா?
  • en %s already exists (user sees File already exists, Name already exists) -> %s முன்பே இருக்கிறது
  • en %s is now set as your personal contact. (user sees Regina is now set as your personal contact, Mr. Kim is now set as your personal contact) -> %s என்பவர் தற்போது உங்களுடைய தனிப்பட்ட தொடர்பாக சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளார்.
  • en %s stopped working and was closed (user sees The application stopped working and was closed, The program stopped working and was closed) -> %s ஆனது செயல்படுவதை நிறுத்தியது, மேலும் அது மூடப்பட்டது

Keys

  • References to key names, like arrow keys, function keys and numeric keys, appear in normal text, not in small caps.
  • Do not translate names of keys that appear on the keyboard.
  • en Alt -> Alt
  • en Backspace -> Backspace
  • en Break -> Break
  • en Caps Lock -> Caps Lock
  • en Ctrl -> Control
  • en Delete -> Delete
  • en Down Arrow -> கீழ் அம்பு
  • en End -> End
  • en Enter -> Enter
  • en Esc -> Escape
  • en Home -> Home
  • en Insert -> Insert
  • en Left Arrow -> இடது அம்பு
  • en Num Lock -> Num Lock
  • en Page Down -> Page Down
  • en Page Up -> Page Up

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Keyboard shortcuts are the underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes. They help the user perform tasks more quickly. Examples: New, Cancel, Options.
  • Slim characters (I, l, t, r, f) as keyboard shortcuts: no. There is no slim character available in Tamil.
  • Characters with downstrokes (g, j, y, p, q) as keyboard shortcuts: yes.
  • Extended characters as keyboard shortcuts: no. Tamil characters are in the range 0B80–0BFF.
  • An additional letter in brackets after the item name as keyboard shortcut: no.
  • A number in brackets after the item name as keyboard shortcut: yes.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name as keyboard shortcut: no.
  • Duplicate keyboard shortcuts when no other character is available: yes. In general avoid duplicates; use one only with prior approval when no other option is left.
  • No keyboard shortcut assigned when no more characters are available (minor options only): no. Shortcuts are sometimes assigned to invalid shortcut characters when no valid one is available.
  • The Tamil keyboard layout is Tamil 99, set by the Tamil Nadu Govt. Other layouts in use: InScript (soft keyboard versions) and Bamini (soft keyboard/software version used overseas in SriLanka, UK, US).
  • Do not localize keyboard shortcuts for Tamil. Tamil99 and InScript are equally used, and Tamil keyboards or stickers are still not popular.
  • Tamil keyboard use has grown, but mostly in DTP (Desktop publishing) companies and Tamil Internet companies, not among end users.
  • In rural schools students are taught on Tamil 99 keyboards, and also English typing, because most applications are in English.
  • Transliteration is still the most preferred form of Tamil input.
  • access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to access UI controls that have text labels. Assigned to top-level controls so the user can move through the UI quickly with the keyboard. Example: F in Alt+F. In UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
  • key tip: the letter or number that appears in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization it is the last character after the ` character. Example: HomeH`
  • shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to perform a common action without going through the UI. Not available for every command. Example: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys use the Ctrl key. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys (F1 through F12) are usually the best choices.

Spoken text

Use an action-noun construction for a Tamil task title rather than copying an English -ing form as a finite verb.

English pronunciation
