Kazakh (Kazakhstan) style guide

Voice

  • Three principles: warm and relaxed, crisp and clear, ready to lend a hand.
  • Warm and relaxed: natural, less formal, grounded in honest conversation. Occasionally fun.
  • Crisp and clear: to the point. Write for scanning first, reading second. Keep it simple.
  • Ready to lend a hand: anticipate real needs, give good information at the right time.
  • Keep the audience in mind. Use technical terms for technical audiences, common words for consumers.
  • Choose words and grammatical structures matching the style of the source text.
  • Keep the general style clear, friendly, concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical language.
  • Choose non-standard translations when they keep the intent of the source better.
  • Never translate literally. Consider the intent of the text and what the customer needs to complete the task.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms, and product names.
  • Use short, simple words from everyday conversation. Short words save screen space and read fast.
  • Use approved synonyms, terms that are interchangeable, when they do not confuse the user. Synonyms avoid repetition and make the text flow.
  • Use abbreviations and short variants of terms.
  • Some Kazakh synonyms are hyphenated compound words.
  • Use synonyms for non-term words too, such as descriptive adjectives and verbs.
  • Never use the same descriptive word twice in a sentence or paragraph. Find a synonym.
  • Not all synonyms are fully interchangeable. Watch for subtle differences in connotation.
  • en edit -> kk өңдеу, synonym өзгерту
  • en use -> kk пайдалану, synonym қолдану
  • en select -> kk бөлектеу, synonym белгілеу

Words and phrases to avoid

  • Avoid an unnecessarily formal tone. Use the less formal variant.
  • en Now: avoid қазіргі таңда, ағымдағы уақытта -> use қазір
  • en Execute: avoid әрекет жасау -> use орындау
  • en Identify: avoid идентификациялау -> use анықтау

You choose the picture—and the gestures you use with it—to create a password that's uniquely yours. -> kk Суреттегі құпия сөз — сенсорлық экранды компьютеріңізді қорғаудың жаңа тәсілі. Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language. Use straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, several clear words over one complicated term.
  • Be mindful when you refer to parts of the world. Named cities, countries, and regions must not be politically disputed. In examples covering several regions, use equivalent references. Never mix countries with states or continents.
  • Represent diverse perspectives and circumstances in text and images. Show a variety of people in many professions, educational settings, locales, and economic settings.
  • Never generalize or stereotype people by region, culture, age, or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names reflecting a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Never use profane or derogatory terms.
  • Never use slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • Never use terms carrying unconscious racial bias, or terms tied to military actions, politics, or controversial historical events and eras.
  • en hang -> en stop responding; kk қойып тастау -> kk жауап беруді тоқтату
  • en guys; ladies and gentlemen -> en colleagues; everyone; all; kk ханымдар мен мырзалар -> kk әріптестер; барлығы; бәрі

Avoid gender bias

  • Kazakh has no gender distinction. Male and female stereotypes are not usually reflected in the language.
  • For generalization, use plural noun forms, for example адамдар, жеке тұлғалар, оқушылар.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities.
  • Never use words that imply pity, such as шалдыққан or зардап шегетін.
  • Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
  • en handicapped -> en person with a disability; kk мүгедек -> kk мүмкіндігі шектеулі адам
  • en normal person; healthy person -> en person without a disability; kk сау адам -> kk мүмкіндігі толық адам
  • Use generic verbs that fit all input methods and devices. In procedures and instructions, avoid verbs that fail with alternative input methods.
  • en Click -> en Select; kk Басу, түрту -> kk Таңдау
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Read text aloud and imagine a screen reader speaking it.
  • Spell out words like және, барған соң, туралы. Screen readers can misread + and ~.
  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Some accessible products and services are not available in Kazakh-speaking markets. Check the appropriate resources.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate words in the UI, mainly button and option names, only for lack of space or to avoid incorrect grammatical structures.
  • Never abbreviate arbitrarily. Use only the accepted abbreviations below.
  • сурет -> (+) сур.
  • және тағы басқа -> (+) және т.б.
  • және сол сияқты -> (+) және с.с.
  • сағат -> (+) сағ
  • минут -> (+) мин
  • секунд -> (+) сек
  • жыл -> (+) ж.
  • килобайт -> (+) КБ
  • мегабайт -> (+) МБ
  • килобит -> (+) кбит
  • Never abbreviate words like мысалы.

Acronyms

  • Acronyms are words made of the initial letters of the major parts of a compound term: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • Use the well-known Kazakh translation of an English acronym when one exists. Check all acronym translations against approved terminology.
  • Add no ending to acronyms.
  • Established Kazakh abbreviations, usable without the spelled-out form:
  • RAM -> ОЖ, full оперативтік жад
  • ROM -> ТЖҚ, full тұрақты жад
  • OS -> ОЖ, full операциялық жүйе
  • PC -> Компьютер, full дербес компьютер
  • Acronyms with no established translation stay in English.
  • The gender of an acronym follows the main word of the full translation. Use a descriptor word, usually that main word, for declination, or use neutral constructions.
  • Omit the descriptor under length restrictions, as in UI, or when the translated text sounds awkward. Never omit it when the grammatical form of the acronym cannot be determined without it.

Capitalization

  • Kazakh uses capitalization very sparingly. Capitalize only when you have to.
  • Capitalize titles of UI elements, such as commands, menus, and dialog boxes, and program names. Only the first word: Ұя биіктігі мен ені
  • For names of UI elements in text, use bold or italic. If that is impossible, put the UI element in quotation marks with an appropriate descriptor.
  • Do not capitalize names of weekdays, months, nationalities, languages, and similar.
  • A capitalized source term does not mean the Kazakh term is capitalized.
  • web is not capitalized: (+) веб-бетті пайдаланыңыз, not (-) Веб-бетті пайдаланыңыз
  • Names of modes and wizards are not capitalized when referred to descriptively: (+) құрастырғыш режимінен шығу, not (-) Құрастырғыш режимінен шығу
  • Days, months, languages, nationalities, and adjectives from country or region names are not capitalized: (+) сейсенбі, мамыр, испандықтар, нидерланд тілі, жапон компьютері, not (-) Сейсенбі, Мамыр, Испандықтар, Нидерланд тілі, Жапон компьютері
  • In multi-word names only the first word is capitalized: (+) Контактілер диспетчері, not (-) Контактілер Диспетчері
  • The word for chapter and similar units is not capitalized: (+) Қосымша мәліметтерді 25-тараудан қараңыз., not (-) Қосымша мәліметтерді 25-Тараудан қараңыз.
  • internet is not capitalized in compound words, but is capitalized as an independent word: (+) интернет-қоғамдастық, интернет-дүкен, not (-) Интернет-қоғамдастық, Интернет-дүкен

Conjunctions

  • Kazakh conjunction grammar is similar to English. Avoid formal conjunctions.
  • en because: old сол себепті -> new себебі
  • en as: old сондықтан -> new себебі, өйткені or omit the conjunction
  • en however: old алайда, дегенмен -> new бірақ

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Kazakh colloquialism unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, but only when that meaning is integral to the text.
  • Omit the colloquialism when omitting it does not affect the meaning.
  • en We've hit a snag… -> kk Қате пайда болған сияқты...
  • en Uploads are limited to 250 MB. Got something smaller? -> kk Файлдың максималды өлшемі — 250 МБ. Кішірек файлды қосқыңыз келе ме?
  • en Bummer… -> kk Қандай өкінішті...

Nouns

  • Use these standardized plural forms.
  • en computer, machine -> kk singular компьютер, plural компьютерлер
  • en driver -> kk singular драйвер, plural драйверлер
  • en server -> kk singular сервер, plural серверлер
  • en wizard -> kk singular шебер, plural шеберлер
  • Never use three or more nouns in the genitive case in a row.
  • (+) Бағдарламалық құралды белсендіру үшін қолдау қызметіне хабарласыңыз., not (-) Бағдарламалық құралды белсендіру үшін қолдау қызметін шақыртыңыз.

Pronouns

  • Use personal pronouns more often than in older writing. Do not use a personal pronoun just because the English source has one.
  • Translate your only when something applies directly to the user or belongs to them personally. Drop it when it only fills a grammatical function, carries no meaning, or when ownership is obvious.
  • Translate your in your settings and your files. Do not translate it in your hand or connect your mouse.
  • The same applies to I, me, mine. Use them to put the user in focus. Do not translate every one. Avoid unnatural-sounding phrases.
  • Never translate you and I as пайдаланушы.
  • In some cases your and mine correspond to өзіңіздің.

Punctuation

  • Put commas before and after мысалы.
  • Мысалы, бұл жағдай ұя беттен өшірілгенде орын алуы мүмкін.
  • Сығу орындалмады, мысалы, сығылған файлдарды жіберу барысында.
  • No comma when мысалы starts or ends an unattached clause: Рұқсат етілген бірліктерді, мысалы дюймдерді немесе сантиметрлерді, белгілеңіз.
  • Inside a parenthetical construction, use commas as usual: Кейбір элементтерді (мысалы, тарату тізімдерін) vCard бағдарламасына импорттау мүмкін емес.
  • Never use commas with әдепкі: Әдепкі мән REG_SZ тең деп танылады.
  • No comma after a phrase with арқасында at the start of a sentence: Осындай құрылым арқасында желілер сырттан шабуылдауға төтеп бере алады.
  • Replace a colon after attention words like Attention, Warning, Caution with an exclamation mark.
  • en Warning: -> kk (+) Назар аударыңыз!, not (-) Назар аударыңыз:
  • Never capitalize regular text after a colon. That capitalization is a language error. This does not apply to lists and direct speech. After a colon followed by a new paragraph, a capital letter is allowed.

Dashes and hyphens

  • Kazakh uses three dash characters: hyphen, en dash, em dash.
  • Use the hyphen to divide words between syllables and to link parts of a compound word. No spaces before or after it. Never use a hyphen where a dash is correct.
  • интернет-дүкен
  • Use the en dash as a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. Omit the space only when the minus shows a negative number.
  • 1 – 2 = –1
  • Use the en dash in number ranges, such as page numbers. No spaces.
  • 10–20-беттерді қараңыз.
  • Use the em dash for dashes wherever technically possible. It separates words in a sentence and has a grammatical function. Never substitute hyphens for em dashes.

Notes and examples formatting

  • Introduce single in-text notes and examples with «Ескерту», «Мысал» followed by a period. The period takes the formatting of the preceding word.
  • en Note: For more information, see Chapter 1. -> kk Ескерту. Қосымша мәліметтерді 1-тараудан қараңыз.

Slash

  • Avoid slashes. Substitute the conjunctions немесе or және.
  • en You will need an installation disk to reinstall or modify the program. -> kk (+) Бағдарламаны қайта орнату немесе өзгерту үшін орнату дискісі қажет., not (-) Бағдарламаны қайта орнату/өзгерту үшін орнату дискісі қажет.
  • Slashes are allowed under length restrictions, as in UI.

Quotation marks

  • Use quotation marks for UI items, such as menus and commands, when they have no bold or italic formatting.
  • In software, product help, and webpages, use straight quotation marks, as in English. Never use single quotation marks.
  • Documentation normally uses chevrons. Inside chevrons use straight quotation marks: "Дайын" түймешігі
  • Place the period outside the chevrons.
  • When double quotation marks are technically impossible, use a workaround to display "…" or «»: two sequenced single quote characters '', or code such as " in HTML.

Parentheses

  • No space between the parentheses and the text inside them.
  • When parentheses enclose part of a sentence, the period goes after the closing parenthesis. When they enclose the whole sentence, the period goes inside.
  • Жалғастыру үшін «Келесі» түймешігін басыңыз (өнім кілті талап етілуі мүмкін).
  • Жалғастыру үшін «Келесі» түймешігін басыңыз. (Өнім кілті талап етілуі мүмкін.)

Sentence fragments

  • Use sentence fragments wherever possible. They are short and to the point and convey the conversational tone.
  • They help most to introduce lists of items and instructions.
  • Make sure fragments fit the context and do not break grammar rules.
  • en To <verb> <Noun>:: long <Noun> <verb> үшін төмендегі берілген әрекеттерді орындаңыз. -> fragment <noun> <verb>үшін:
  • en In this article:: long Бұл мақалада төмендегі сұрақтар қарастырылады: -> fragment Бұл мақалада:
  • en Before installing the program prepare the following:: long Бағдарламаны орнату алдында төмендегілерді дайындау қажет: -> fragment Төмендегілерді дайындаңыз:
  • en For additional information, see:: long Қосымша мәліметтерді төмендегі мақалалардан қараңыз: -> fragment Қосымша мәліметтер:
  • en To set up the account:: long Тіркелгіні реттеу үшін төмендегі қадамдарды орындау қажет: -> fragment Тіркелгіні реттеу үшін:

Symbols and nonbreaking spaces

  • Always translate & as and in running text.
  • Keep & only inside a tag, placeholder, shortcut, or other code.

Verbs

  • Use the active voice in general. It emphasizes the person or thing doing the action and is more direct and personal.
  • en When you save this document, it'll be updated to include changes made by other authors. -> do kk Осы құжатты сақтағанда, ол басқа авторлар енгізген өзгерістерді қамтып жаңартылады., not Осы құжат сақталғанда, ол басқа авторлармен енгізілген өзгерістерді қамтып жаңартылады.
  • Use the passive voice to avoid a wordy or awkward construction, when the action rather than the doer is the focus, and when the subject is unknown.
  • Use the passive voice in error messages where the user is the subject and would feel blamed.
  • en Your copy of Office is not activated -> do kk Осы Office көшірмесі әлі белсендірілмеген, not Сіз Office көшірмеңізді әлі белсендірген жоқсыз
  • Use the imperative in procedures to save space and talk directly to the customer. Avoid sounding too short and abrupt.
  • Do not overdo the imperative. Too many commands talk down to the customer.
  • Never change you can (істей аласыз) structures into imperatives.
  • Prefer the imperative over you must (... қажет) phrases.
  • Be careful with the imperative outside procedures. It can sound condescending or bossy.
  • Translate imperative titles of help articles with imperative phrases, not nouns.
  • en You can now create a table. -> do kk Енді кесте жасауыңызға болады., not Кестені жасаңыз.
  • en You should create a folder before adding files to it. -> do kk Қалтаға файлдар қоспас бұрын, оны жасаңыз., not Қалтаға файлдар қоспас бұрын, оны жасауыңыз қажет. қажет sounds too direct and can sound rude.
  • en Protect your files in case of a crash—turn on AutoRecover and AutoSave -> do kk Файлдарыңызды бұзылу жағдайынан қорғаңыз — автоматты қалпына келтіру мен автоматты сақтау функцияларын қосыңыз, not Файлдарды бұзылу жағдайынан қорғау — автоматты қалпына келтіру мен автоматты сақтау функцияларын қосу
  • Headings translated as nouns can sound too formal and distant, or simply not fluent.
  • Use the future or past tense when it sounds more natural, even where the source uses the present.
  • en The wizard has finished installing the program. -> kk Шебер бағдарламаны орнатты., not Шебер көмегімен бағдарламаны орнату аяқталды.
  • en You are now connected to the internet. -> kk Интернетке қосылдыңыз., not Интернетке қосылым орнатылды.
  • Translate command names as verbs, always in the infinitive: Save Сақтау, Cut Қиып алу, Paste Қою
  • Жауап беру
  • Бағытын өзгерту
  • Оқылмаған деп белгілеу
  • Орындау үшін белгілеу
  • Жылжыту

Progress indicator

  • English expresses an operation in process with a gerund. Translate it with the present continuous tense, or with a construction using жатыр, жүр, отыр, тұр.
  • Телефон реттелуде...
  • Never translate please as өтінеміз. Translate Please wait a minute… as Күтіңіз… or Күте тұрыңыз.
  • Translate first-person plural sentences with the pronoun біз or without it.
  • Күте тұрыңыз және ол туралы біз сізге хабарлаймыз.
  • Күте тұрыңыз және ол туралы сізге хабарлаймыз.

Status and notification text

  • Translate messages like no items available and no alarms set as clearly and succinctly as possible.
  • Ешқандай элементтер жоқ.
  • Сигналдар орнатылмаған
  • Translate status messages describing an action taken by the phone, such as dialing, as ТЕРІЛУДЕ.... Use the continuous form of the verb.

Localization considerations

  • Adapt the translated text to local language, customs, and standards. Use Kazakh names rather than English: Edward -> Әділ, New York -> Қарағанды.
  • The language must have the look and feel of a product originally written in Kazakh, with idiomatic syntax and terminology, and high terminological consistency.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are often trademarked and are rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too, for example IntelliSense.
  • Product names that localize easily, in part or entirely, are usually localized. Check the correct translation in approved terminology.
  • Always translate the preposition for in product names, unless the whole product name including for is trademarked or copyrighted.
  • en Enterprise Data Processor Service for Windows -> kk Windows жүйесіне арналған корпоративтік деректерді өңдеу қызметі
  • Do not decline localized product edition names. Use a descriptive translation of edition names where possible.
  • en To activate Windows Professional: -> kk Windows кәсіби нұсқасын белсендіру үшін:

Version numbers

  • Version numbers always contain a period, for example Version 4.2.
  • en Version 2.3 -> kk 2.3 нұсқасы
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but are not technically the same.
  • Product, feature, and component names often sit in version strings. Always translate version strings that contain copyright information, using approved terminology.

Software considerations

  • Translate all menus, menu items, commands, buttons, check boxes, and similar UI elements consistently across the localized product.

Arrow key names

  • Localize and capitalize all arrow key names.

Error messages

  • Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt the user to act or state that the computer needs rebooting.
  • Apply the voice principles so the translation is natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate the US strings.
  • English error messages often end with exclamation points. Usually do not use them in Kazakh. Judge each case.
  • Use the target phrases below for standard phrases. Use another wording when it works better in context.
  • en Cannot configure … -> kk Конфигурациялау мүмкін емес …
  • en Cannot … -> kk ... мүмкін емес.; Word cannot open the document … -> kk Word құжатты аша алмайды…

  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."

  • Treat the placeholder as an actual noun or numeral and move it into the position the grammar rules require.
  • en %I64d%% CPU Usage -> kk ОП пайдаланылуы: %I64d%%
  • Strings with number placeholders may need different grammatical forms for the placeholder and the surrounding words. Change the sentence structure so it is grammatical with all possible values.
  • en %1 folders are detected. -> kk Анықталған қалталар: %1.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands, or dialog boxes mark keyboard shortcuts, which let the user work faster. Examples: New, Cancel, Options.
  • Assign keyboard shortcuts to Cyrillic letters or numbers wherever possible, not to Latin letters, so users need not switch keyboard layout.
