Sorting

  • There is no accepted standard sorting order.
  • The Unicode set is an expanded alphabet with characters unused in Amharic, so its sort order varies from Amharic dictionaries.
  • The Ethiopic set is syllabic: one root character plus six phonetic variants. Sort on the root letter, with the variants subsumed under the root in sequence.
  • With the Unicode sequence as the basis, non-alphabetic characters and numerals come after the alphabetic characters.
  • No uppercase or lowercase, so case is not relevant in sorting.
  • Non-Ethiopic characters such as Arabic numerals and hyphens affect sort order.
  • Character sorting order follows the Unicode order of the character set above, ሀ (4608) through ፴ (4988).
  • Sorted words: ሀሁ፛ ሁሌ፛ ሁለ፛ ሁሇት፛ ሁሇተኗ፛ ሁሇት ጊዎ፛ ሁሇኑተ኏፛ ሁሌጊዎ፛ ህሜህሜ፛ ሃሜሃሜ፛ ሃሜላ፛ ሆሜጢጢ

Geopolitical concerns

  • Check for sensitive or offensive content in maps, flags, country, city and language names, art and graphics, and cultural content with historical or political references.
  • Check maps for accuracy and existing political restrictions.
  • Re-check country, city, and language names each release, even when previously approved. Use the most up-to-date Amharic list.
  • Check cultural content, clip art, religious symbols, body and hand gestures against the target culture.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives take nominal patterns or derive from nouns, verbs, other parts of speech. Nominalize by suffixing the nominal article.
  • Amharic has few primary adjectives: ኜዱሴ 'new', ኜርጌ 'old', ቙ጪ 'yellow'.
  • Nominal patterns: ኤቚዴ 'heavy'; ሧቁቄ 'fine, subtle'; ኜዱሴ 'new'
  • Denominalizing suffixes: ሃይሇኗ 'powerful' (from hayl 'power'); ኡ዁ኌተኗ 'true, genuine'
  • Adjective noun complex: the adjective precedes the noun, the verb comes last. ኜዱሴፓርግሪሜ 'a new program'; ኜዱሴፓርግሪሜሯሪ (lit. a new program he-built) 'he built a new program'.
  • Possessive adjectives take the prefix yä: የሂሲቜ 'account' (lit. 'From the city'); የሂሲቜ 'Accounting' (lit. 'of Accounting').
  • A relative perfectum or imperfectum works as an adjective with the same yä prefix: የተሺሺሇ 'improved, upgraded'; የቅየ 'old'; የሙኤተሌ 'following' (from ይኤተሊሌ 'to follow'); የሙታይ ኌ዁ 'visible'.

Articles

  • The definite article is a suffixed element. In the singular, masculine and feminine differ. In the plural they do not.
  • ቛት - ቛቱ masculine
  • ፆሧሴ - ፆሧሰ masculine
  • ሌጅ - ሌጅቷ feminine
  • ኑጉሤ - ኑጉሥች masculine plural
  • ኑግሤት - ኑግሤቶች feminine plural
  • Use unlocalized product and feature names without a definite or indefinite article.

  • Start Visual Studio -> Visual Studio ጀሜሬ
  • powered by Windows Live -> ቗ Windows Live ሃይሌ ያገኔ
  • For localized feature names use የ whenever a noun follows the brand name, with no space after it: የWindows Live ፈሌሜ ሗሴሩያ
  • Hide the Task Manager when it is minimized. -> የተግቚሬ ኜሴተዲዲሩ዁ ኡኑዱያኑሴ ሱዯሧግ ዯቜሿ዁ፚ
  • Articles for English borrowed terms: not applicable.

  • Internet News Server Name -> የ቗ይኌሗሧቜ ዎ኏ ኜገሌጋይ ሴሜ

Gender

  • Nouns can be masculine or feminine. The old feminine suffix -ት is no longer productive and is limited to certain patterns and isolated nouns.
  • Nouns and adjectives ending in -ኜኾ usually take -ት for the feminine: ኞትዮጴያኾ 'Ethiopian (m.)' vs ኞትዮጴያኾት 'Ethiopian (f.)'; ሯሚያኾ 'heavenly (m.)' vs ሯሚያኾት 'heavenly (f.)'.
  • Specifiers for people and animals: ኼኑዴ masculine, ሳት feminine. ኼኑዴ ሌጅ 'boy', ሳት ሌጅ 'girl'.
  • Use masculine gender for user-to-computer strings: ሯሬዏ፛ ሗሌሴ፛

Nouns

  • Nouns can be primary or derived. ኜሬትዉት "editing" is primary; ኜሬታዅ 'editor' is derived.
  • Inflection: not applicable.
  • The plural suffix is -ኢች. Morphophonological alternations depend on the final consonant or vowel.
  • After a consonant use plain -ኢች: ቛት 'house' -> ቛቶች 'houses'.
  • After a back vowel (-a, -o, -u) the suffix is -ዂች: ዁ሺ 'dog' -> ዁ሺዂች 'dogs'; ኤ቗ር 'drum' -> ኤ቗ርዂች 'drums'.
  • After a front vowel use ዂች or -ዮች: ጷሏፈ 'scholar' -> ጷሏፈዂች or ጷሏፈዮች 'scholars'.
  • Or delete the final vowel and use plain ኢች: ዁ሽች 'dogs'.

  • Bulleted items that continue an introductory clause take no period.
  • List items that are neither sentences nor continuations (chapters, sections, products, system requirements) take no period.
  • If the translation is longer than the US text, or splits into several sentences, add a period where it improves style.
  • Never put a period after just one word.
  • The same period rules apply to instruction lists, captions, and callouts.
  • Quotation marks mark direct speech. Amharic prefers «...»: «ይህ ኡኑዯሜኑሜ ይቻሊሌፚ»
  • No space between the parentheses and the text inside: (1974)

  • ዱሴኩ - ዱሴኪች
  • ፉይሌ - ፉይልች
  • ቄኑቜሬ - ቄኑቜርች

Syntax

  • Prefer the first construction below, to avoid ambiguity.
  • I saw the program. -> ፓርግሪመኑ ኜየሁት (lit. the program- I saw)
  • I use Miscrosoft. -> የሜጟሿሗ዁ Miscrosoft ኌ዁ፚ (lit. what I use- the product name- is)

Verbs

  • An Amharic verb has two, three, four, or more consonants (radicals). The consonants carry the basic meaning, the vowels the shades of meaning.
  • ሯሚ bi-radical; ሯ቗ሧ tri-radical; ሗሯኤሧ quadric-radical.
  • Translate verbs in error messages consistently. If omitting the predicate "be" is grammatical, omit it, but do so consistently across all error messages. Be concise without changing meaning.
  • The document is too large. / Document too large. -> ሯኌደ ኡጅግ ትሌቄ ኌ዁ፚ Be consistent with the verb "to be".

  • The application may attempt to convert the graphic. -> ትግ቗ሪ዁ ግሪፈእኑ ሉሇኼጤ዁ ይምኩሬ ይሆ኏ሌፚ may + verb can become verb + possibly.
  • A problem occurred while trying to connect to the network share '%1!s!'. -> '%1!s!'የጋሪ ኜ዁ታሧ ሗሧቜ ጋሬ ሇሗገ኏ኔት መኤሪ ቗ሙዯሧግ቗ት ጊዎ ችግሬ ኜጋጤሞሌፚ Shorten to A problem occurred while connecting to the network share '%1!s!'.

  • የተሗሧጟ዁ኑ ቄኑቜሬ ሯሬዏፚ

Audience

  • Use neutral language. Do not stress gender differences or reinforce stereotypes, also in scenarios, comparisons, examples, illustrations, metaphors.
  • Balance roles and functions between men and women: active vs passive, leading vs secondary, technical vs non-technical.
  • Base scenarios, pictures, metaphors, and comparisons on areas and attributes common to both genders.
  • Instead of naming both genders separately, use a general term: person, users, persons -> ሯ዁, ተጟቂሙዂች, ሯዂች
  • Avoid sentences referring to a single person of unknown gender. Rewrite with a plural subject.
  • Where a single-person reference is unavoidable, do not use he or she or S/he -> not ኡሰ ኼይሜ ኡሶ, not የሰ/የሶ
  • Language should sound natural, like spoken conversation.
  • Generally avoid slashes to combine genders. Exception: License Terms, and sometimes table headers or column and row titles.
  • Neutral nouns: ሯ዁, ሗሩ, ቘዴኑ ሗሩ, አኩሴፎሬት, ሯሪተኗ, ተጟቂሙ
  • Genders combined by a slash: ኡሰ/ሶ, ኡሶ/ሰ

Style

  • In procedural text, order interface terms top to bottom: menu, command, dialog box, dialog box controls. Keep this order unless technical reasons prevent it.
  • The order convention matters less in body text, which takes a more personal tone.
  • On the View menu, click Filter -> ቗ወይታ ሜ኏ላ዁ ሊይ ሚጢሩያ የሙሇ዁ኑ ይጪኍ
  • On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and click the Security tab -> ቗ሗሲሩያ ሜ኏ላ዁ ሊይ የ቗ይኌሗሧቜ ኜሚሪጭች የሙሇ዁ኑ ይጪኍ኏ የሗዴህኑ ትሬኑ ይጪኍ

Tone

  • Use the informal tone, as to a familiar person or a person of equal status. No disrespect is inferred.
  • Do not use the formal tone (verb conjugated in the plural).
  • Avoid the passive voice.
  • Do not use ኡቚኩህ for please. It signifies pleading strongly and sounds exasperated. Politeness is carried by tone variation instead.

Voice

  • The addressee is a masculine single person. The conjugated verb with its pronominal suffix agrees in person, gender, and number.
  • Do not use the independent pronoun unless for special effect. Do not translate you as a word; the verb carries it.
  • You are now connected to the Internet. -> [*ኡሬስ] ኜሁኑ ኤ቗ይኌሗሧቜ ጋሬ ተገ኏ኙተ኿ሌፚ

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate in the UI (mainly buttons or option names) only for lack of space.
  • ዆ሗተ ሜሔሧት: ዆.ሜ.
  • የተቚ቗ረት ሗኑግሴታት ዴሬጅት: ተ.ሗ.ዴ.
  • ኜሚሪ ሌሚት ሚኅ቗ሬ: ኜ.ሌ.ሚ.
  • ኞትዮጴያ ቴላቡዏኑ: ኞቲቡ
  • Use a non-breaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) in any abbreviation.
  • Where non-breaking spaces are impossible, as in Help files, write the abbreviation without a space so one letter does not move to the next line.
  • The forward stroke is also a common abbreviation marker: ገቜሧሔይኼት - ገ/ ሔይኼት
  • Do not abbreviate: Megahertz MHz -> ማጋሄሬዏ; Hertz Hz -> ሄሬዏ

Accessibility

  • Accessibility options make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities, through a customizable UI, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.
  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Amharic-speaking markets.

Acronyms

  • Examples: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), RAM (Random Access Memory).
  • Many acronyms are standardized and stay untranslated. Add the English full spelling only when the acronym needs explaining. A common acronym stands alone.
  • Do not localize or spell out: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization), ISDN, DOS, DSL, CD, DVD.
  • Localized acronyms: none in Amharic.
  • Some acronyms are already adapted to Amharic: ሪሜ, ሱዱ, ዱቡዱ

Applications, products, and features

  • Product names are rarely translated. Feature names are sometimes trademarked: IntelliSense™. Verify a name is translatable and unprotected before translating it.

Frequent errors

  • Frequent errors: mistranslation, using the English word where an Amharic word exists, and inconsistency.
  • Windows Live ፈሌሜሯሩ -> ፈሌሜ ሗሴሩያ
  • Account as ኜኧ዁ኑት -> ሗሇያ
  • Email: ኞ-ማይል, not ኞማሌ, not ኞማይሌ

Fictitious information

  • Never create your own fictitious names. Use the source names or the list of legally approved names.
  • Ask the product team about fictitious companies, names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and whether localized fictitious content is required.

Standardized translations

  • Standardize on: standard phrases in error messages, standard phrases in documentation, the copyright notice.

Unlocalized items

  • Leave these key names untranslated: ALT, ALT GR, BACKSPACE, BREAK, CAPS LOCK, CLEAR, COMMAND (Macintosh), CTRL, DEL, DELETE (Macintosh), END, ENTER, ESC, F1-F12, HOME, INS, NUMPAD ENTER, NUM LOCK, NUMPAD +, NUMPAD -, NUMPAD *, NUMPAD /, NUMPAD 0-9, OPTION (Macintosh), PAGE DOWN, PAGE UP, PAUSE, PRINT SCREEN, RETURN (Macintosh), SCROLL LOCK, SHIFT, SPACEBAR, SYS RQ, TAB.

  • Print… -> ኜትሜ… (conjugated verb)
  • Select All -> ኱ለኑ ሜሧጤ (conjugated verb)

  • Print more than one copy -> ኧኑዴ ቗ሊይ ቄጂ ኜትሜ
  • Select all -> ኱ለኑ ሜሧጤ
  • Use consistent terminology and style across all dialog boxes and with other localized applications. Solutions adopted now are reused later, especially for identical dialog boxes across applications.

  • Use parallel language for UI elements parallel in function, such as lists and tables. Keep all items similar in form and in the same part of speech.
  • Where the English has a verb, end every translation with a verb in the imperative. The subject of the introductory phrase is also the subject of the main verb.
  • Where the user must act on a page or in a section, use the imperative verb.
  • Change settings for the files -> የፉይልቹኑ ቄኑጅት ሿይሬ

Keys

  • Most actions must also work from the keyboard.
  • Key names, such as arrow keys, function keys, and numeric keys, appear in normal text, not small caps.

  • Extended characters as hot keys: yes.
  • An additional letter in brackets after the item name: yes.
  • A number in brackets after the item name: yes.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name: yes.
  • Slim characters (I, l, t, r, f), downstroke characters (g, j, y, p, q), duplicate hot keys, and omitting a hot key when no characters remain: n/a.

  • How to create a table -> ሯኑጟሧዥ ኡኑዳት ሗፋጟሬ ይቻሊሌ
  • Troubleshooting Help headings follow the pattern "I have done so and so, but this or that does not happen". Keep that grammatical structure.
  • Keep copyright text consistent within the product and across Amharic versions.
  • No change is allowed until the English text differs. A differing Amharic translation is a minor style error, or an accuracy error if meaning changed.
