Punjabi (India) style guide

Voice

• Write clear, friendly, concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical language.
• Choose words for the audience: technical terms for technical readers, common words for consumers.
• Free to pick non-standard translations when they keep the intent of the source.
• Do not translate literally. Consider the intent and what the customer needs to complete the task.

• Punjabi has three genders: masculine, feminine, neuter. The system is partly semantic, partly phonological.
• Inflected nouns ending in -aa (ਆ) are usually masculine; nouns ending in -ii (ਈ) are feminine; -ae (ਏ) are neuter. The semantic criterion beats the phonological one. Overall gender is unpredictable.
• Regular masculine nouns end in a (ਆ), regular feminine nouns end in i (ਈ): Munda (ਮੁੰਡਾ), Kuri (ਕੁੜੀ)ੀ).
• Get the feminine form of some nouns by replacing the ending a (ਆ) with i (ਈ): Ghora (ਘੋੜਾ)ਾ), Ghori (ਘੋੜੀ)ੀ).
• Not all nouns follow the regular pattern. Remember the gender of each noun.
• Adjectives agree in gender with the noun. The noun kitaab (ਕਿਤਾਬ) ਤਾਬ) is feminine but does not end in i (ਈ). Say patli kitaab (ਪਤਲੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ) ਤਾਬ), not patla kitaab (ਪਤਲਾ ਕਿਤਾਬ).ਤਾਬ).
• The noun kamm (ਕੰਮ) is masculine but does not end in a (ਆ). Say changa kamm kita (ਚੰਗਾਾ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ), not changi kamm kita (ਚੰਗੀੀ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ).
• Exceptions: not all nouns ending in i (ਈ) are feminine; nai (ਨਾਈ) and aadmi (ਆਦਮੀ) are masculine. Not all nouns ending in a (ਆ) are masculine; Ma (ਮਾਂ)ਂ) is feminine.
• The same word can be masculine or feminine depending on meaning. Punjabi for the language is feminine; Punjabi for ethnicity is masculine.
• Some words with a single meaning can be both masculine and feminine: ghah (ਘਾਹ).
• Some nouns take either a masculine or a feminine adjective: hassa (ਹੱਸਿਆ). ਿਆ). The translation for loud laughter includes both: ucha or uchi hassa (ਉੱਚਾ ਜਾਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਹੱਸਿਆ).ਿਆ).

Genitive

• Genitive case marks the possessor of the referent of another noun. It can also express an associative relation or other relationships.
• Punjabi genitive case markers: ਦਾ, ਦੇ, ਦੀ, ਦਿਆਂਂ, ਦੀਆਂ।ਂ।
• ਉਹਦਾ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੋਹਣਾੋਹਣਾ ਹੈ। genitive masculine singular direct

• ਉਹਦੀਆਂਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂਾਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਿਕਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹਨ। genitive feminine plural direct
• Do not attach a genitive s to a product name; it reads as a modification of the name. Add to a product or component name with a hyphen or a periphrastic construction.
• Microsoft’s products -> Microsoft products, Products by Microsoft

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

• Culture-centric colloquialisms, idioms and metaphors are allowed.
• Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Punjabi colloquialism of the same meaning unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
• Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, but only if the meaning is an integral part of the text.
• If the colloquialism can go without changing the meaning, omit it.

Modifiers

• A modifier is optional in phrase structure. Removing it does not break grammaticality. A modifier can be a word, a phrase or a clause.
• en Disk space too low. -> pa ਡਿਸਕ ਥਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਹੈ।ੱਟ ਹੈ।
• en Delete some unnecessary files from the folder. -> pa ਫੋਲਡਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਬੇਲੋੜੀ ਫਾਈਲਾਂ ਮਿਟਾਓ।ਟਾਓ।

Nouns

• A noun names a living being, place, thing or abstract idea: ਮੁੰਡਾ for boy, ਕਿਤਾਬਤਾਬ for book, ਕਾਰ for car, ਸਕੂਲਕੂਲ for school, ਘਰ for house.
• Punjabi nouns have assigned gender, masculine or feminine. Some common nouns work for both genders.
• Punjabi nouns have two numbers, singular and plural, and two cases, direct and oblique, which apply to almost all nouns.
• A Punjabi noun averages five to six forms: ਮੁੰਡਾ muṇḍā singular-direct, ਮੁੰਡੇ muṇḍē singular-oblique and plural-direct, ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂਂ muṇḍiāṃ plural-oblique, ਮੁੰਡਿਆਆ muṇḍiā singular-vocative, ਮੁੰਡਿਓਓ muṇḍiō plural-vocative.

Pronouns

• Pronouns refer to a noun or another pronoun and reduce repetition. Used as modifiers they are adjectival; they are pronouns only when used independently.
• Except first and second person personal pronouns and reflexive pronouns, all pronouns can work as adjectives, including genitive case forms.

• Do not overuse possessive pronouns. Punjabi sounds more natural with the definite article, especially when the possessor is obvious.
• en Double-click the Skype Name in your Contact List or the search result -> pa ਆਪਣੀ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਸੂਚੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਿੱਚ Skype ਨਾਮ ਜਾਂ ਖੋਜ ਨਤੀਜੇ ‘ਤੇ ਡਬਲਂ ਖੋਜ ਨਤੀਜੇ ‘ਤੇ ਡਬਲ-ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ

• en Where is your home PC located? -> pa ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਹੋਮ PC ਕਿੱਥੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈਿਤ ਹੈ?

Punctuation

• Use Punjabi-specific punctuation in place of the US English punctuation in the source.
• Bulleted lists: the bullet sign is the same as in English.
• Comma (,): separator when several names or items are written consecutively, and for short pauses.
• en To enhance the security and performance of your computer, we recommend that you turn on Windows Update. -> pa ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨੂੰ ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਲਈਧਾਉਣ ਲਈ, ਅਸੀਂ ਸਿਫਾਰਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਂ Windows Update ਚਾਲੂ ਕਰੋ।

• Three dash characters are used in Punjabi: hyphen, en dash, em dash.
• Hyphen (-): divides words between syllables, links parts of a compound word, and connects the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form.
• In flowing text the hyphen can break a word in half so it continues on the next line.
• Put no spaces around a hyphen.
• E-mail = ਈ-ਮੇਲ
• Drop-down = ਡ੍ਰੌਪਰੌਪ-ਡਾਉਨ
• En dash (–) is the width of a small n; em dash (—) is the width of a capital M.
• En dash: used as a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. In English it marks ranges, such as 6–10 years, read as six to ten years.
• The en dash often replaces the word to or ਤੋਂ.
• May–June 1967 = ਮਈ–ਜੂਨ 1967 reads as ਮਈ 1967 ਤੋਂ ਜੂਨ 1967 ਤਕ'
• 1:00–2:00 p.m. = ਦੁਪਹਿਰ 1:00ਰ 1:00–2:00 ਵਜੇ ਜੇ reads as ਦੁਪਹਿਰ 1.00 ਤੋਂ 2.00 ਵਜੇ’ਜੇ’
• For ages 6–9 = 6–9 ਸਾਲਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਲਈ reads as 6 ਤੋਂ 9 ਸਾਲਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਲਈ’
• The en dash also marks number ranges such as page numbers. Use no spaces around it in that case.
• From page No. 15–20 = ਪੰਨਾ ਸੰਖਿਆ ਆ 15–20 reads as ਪੰਨਾ ਸੰਖਿਆ ਆ 15 ਤੋਂ 20
• Em dash: marks a break in thought or sets an appositive off from the rest of the sentence. It can also show a date whose time frame has not ended (John Smith, 1976—).
• Use the em dash sparingly in formal writing. In informal writing it can replace commas, semicolons, colons and parentheses for added emphasis, an interruption, or an abrupt change of thought.
• The em dash works like a colon or a set of parentheses, where a full stop is too strong and a comma too weak. A colon is often recommended instead in lists or definitions.
• en I need three items at the store—biscuits, chili, and cheese. -> pa ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਟੋਰ ਤੋਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਲੈਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ ਹੈ—ਬਿਸਕੁਟਕੁਟ, ਮਿਰਚਾਂਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਪਨੀਰ।

• Ellipses (suspension points) mark titles in taskbars or browser tabs that are longer than the space available.
• ... after a command name means the user must give more information, for example in a later dialog box, before the action can finish. Example: the Save As... command.
• An ellipsis after a status message means the operation may take time, as in Downloading updates...
• The most common form is a row of three periods (...).

• en File is being saved. = pa ਫਾਈਲ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤਅਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾਹਾ ਹੈ।
• en Delete this file. = pa ਇਸ ਫਾਈਲ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਟਾਓ।ਟਾਓ।
• Quotation marks: US source strings may surround software references with English quotation marks.
• Use a double inverted comma when you quote speech without change.
• Use single inverted commas for a quoted phrase or word inside an already quoted sentence.

• Parentheses: put no space between the parentheses and the text inside them.
• Parentheses hold optional or additional material that could be removed without destroying the meaning. They can also mark either singular or plural for nouns, as in the file(s).
• en You have received a "cookie" (Internet information stored on your computer) from a website. -> pa ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰਇੱਕ ਵੈੱਬਸਾਈਟ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ "ਕੁਕੀ"(ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ‘ਤੇ ਸਟੋਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਇੰਟਰਨੈੱਟ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ) ੱਟ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈਹੈ।ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈਹੈ।
• en The system cannot find the file(s). -> pa ਸਿਸਟਮਟਮ ਫਾਈਲ(ਲਾਂ) ਨੂੰਂ) ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂਂ ਲੱਭੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ।ਕਦਾ।

• Use the following steps. -> Here’s how
• en source Use the following steps.: pa long form ਨਿਮਨ ਲਿਖਤ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਯੋਗ ਕਰੋ ਕਰੋ -> pa sentence fragment ਨਿਮਨ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰੋਰਤੋਂ ਕਰੋ

Split infinitive

• A split infinitive puts a word or phrase, usually an adverb, between to and the bare infinitive: To boldly go where no one has gone before.
• en It is strongly recommended that you scan any received files. -> pa ਇਸਦੀਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵੀ ਰੂਪ ਤੋਂ ਸਿਫਾਰਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਫਾਈਲਾਂਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਕੈਨਕੈਨ ਕਰੋ।

Subjunctive

• The subjunctive expresses a wish, emotion, possibility, judgment, opinion, necessity, or an action that has not happened. It shows only in certain forms and tenses.
• The subjunctive looks like the infinitive, and all persons, including third person singular, take no s. The form is the same for present, future and past.
• It does not affect forms and tenses in Punjabi sentences.
• en He tries to save file. -> pa ਉਹ ਫਾਈਲ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤਅਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
• en It is important (expression) that he try to save file. -> pa ਇਹ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ (expression) ਕਿ ਉਹ ਫਾਈਲ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤਅਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

• No particular concerns about symbols in Punjabi localization.
• Non-breaking spaces are not used in Punjabi localization, and there is little need for them. A non-breaking space keeps words together so an automatic line break does not split them, for example 5 MB must not break into 5 at the end of one line and MB at the start of the next.
• In Punjabi you may remove the white space in some quantitative expressions to keep consecutive words together. 5 MB may be written 5MB.
• In HTML, create the non-breaking space with instead of white space.
• 5km
• 5 km

Verbs

• Use simple tenses. Simple present is easiest to understand. Avoid future tense unless the event really happens in the future and the simple present does not apply. Use simple past for events that already happened.
• Punjabi verbs convey action (bring, read, walk, run) or a state of being (exist, stand): ਜਾ go, ਕਰ do, ਸੁਣ listen, ਹੱਸ laugh, ਲਿਖ ਖ write.
• A Punjabi verb root is always in second person singular imperative form.
• Punjabi verbs agree with the subject or object in gender, number and person, and take forms for three persons: first, second, third.
• Punjabi verbs are perfect or non-perfect. Perfect means the action is completed at the time of saying; non-perfect covers ongoing or not yet started.
• Punjabi verbs take future, present and past tense forms: ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਂਦਾ ਹੈ jāndā hai (he) goes present, ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ ੀ jāndā sī (he) was going past, ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਾ jāvēgā (he) will go future.
• en chat: ਚੈਟ ਕਰਦਾ, ਚੈਟ ਕੀਤੀ, ਚੈਟ ਕਰੇਗਾਾ

Localization considerations

• Adapt the translated text to the local language, customs and standards.
• The language must have the look and feel of a product originally written in Punjabi (India), with idiomatic syntax and terminology and high terminological consistency.

Accessibility

• Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical or visual disabilities.
• Hardware and software components use a flexible, customizable interface, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.
• Some accessible products and services may not be available in Punjabi (India)-speaking markets. Double-check with the appropriate resources.

Applications, products, and features

• Application and product names are rarely translated; they are often trademarked. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too (IntelliSense™).
• No specific Punjabi rules for trade marking of applications, products and features.
• Version numbers always contain a period (Version 4.2).
• en WCAG 6.2 -> pa WCAG 6.2
• Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but are not technically the same.
• Product, feature and component names often sit in version strings as they appear in the software. Check approved terminology for the correct translations of such strings.

Software considerations

• This applies to all menus, menu items, commands, buttons and check boxes. Translate them consistently in the localized product.

Error messages

• Error messages tell the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or say the computer needs a reboot.
• Make the target translation natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
• en Something went wrong. -> pa ਕੁਝ ਗਲਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।ਿਆ ਹੈ।
• en Not enough memory to process this command. -> pa ਇਸ ਕਮਾਂਡ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਮੈਮੋਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਂ ਹੈ।
• Use consistent terminology and language style in localized error messages. Do not just translate them as they appear in the US product.
• In Punjabi, form sentences by placing the negative marker after the main verb, or by placing the adjective that describes the negative quality before the verb.
• Standard phrases: use the target phrases below, or another wording if it works better in context.
• Cannot … / Could not … -> ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ...ਕਦਾ...; en File could not be open / File cannot be open -> pa ਫਾਈਲ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਂ ਸਕਦਾ।ਕਦਾ।
• Failed to … / Failure of … -> ਅਸਫਲ ਰਿਹਾ... ਹਾ...; en Failed to connect / Failure to connect -> pa ਕਨੈਕਟ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ੱਚ ਅਸਫਲ ਰਿਹਾ।ਹਾ।

• ... is not available / ... is unavailable -> ਉਪਲਬਧ ਨਹੀਂ.ਂ...; en The command is not available / The command is unavailable -> pa ਇਹ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਉਪਲਬਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।ਂ ਹੈ।
• For an error message with a placeholder, find out what replaces the placeholder so the sentence stays grammatical.
• %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>
• %c means <letter>
• %s means <string>
• "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."
• "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."
• If adjectives and nouns agree and the noun is a placeholder, you must know the exact string so a preceding adjective inflects correctly. Most source strings already avoid modifying a placeholder with an adjective.
• If the language has subject-verb agreement, reword the translation to avoid an ungrammatical sentence.
• en Replace invalid %s? (user sees Replace invalid data?, Replace invalid file?) -> pa ਅਯੋਗ % %s ਬਦਲੋ?
• en %s already exists (user sees File already exists, Name already exists) -> pa %s ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
• en %s is now set as your personal contact. (user sees Regina is now set as your personal contact, Mr. Kim is now set as your personal contact) -> pa %s ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਲਈ ਸੈਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।ੈਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

Keyboard shortcuts

• Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes mark keyboard shortcuts.
• Keyboard shortcuts are key combinations such as ALT+F or Ctrl+S that move focus to a menu, command or control without the mouse.
• To decide whether to localize a keyboard shortcut, check: user preference (native language keyboard, sticker or soft keyboard, and whether people prefer localized shortcuts); localization user experience; keyboard availability (Indic language keyboards, stickers, soft keyboard versions).
