Chinese (Traditional) style guide

Voice

  • Style: clear, friendly, concise. Everyday conversation, not formal or technical register.
  • Choose words for the audience: technical terms for technical audiences, common words for consumers.
  • Non-standard translations OK if they keep the source intent.
  • Never translate literally. Consider the intent and what the customer needs to complete the task.
  • End users are of all ages and genders. Never use a discriminating term or expression. Wording and tone must not discriminate by gender, age, race, occupation, religion, political belief, political party, national origin, geography, wealth, poverty, or disability.
  • Always use the polite form 您 for You in all software products.
  • You are now connected to the Internet. -> 您現在已連線到網際網路。
  • Rewrite strings so they are natural to zh-TW. Remove unnecessary content.
  • Meet Windows. -> 認識 Windows

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms, product names.
  • Prefer short, simple, everyday words. They save screen space and read quickly.
  • PC -> 電腦. OK when talking about a personal computer: use 您的電腦, not 您的 PC.
  • Customer service -> 客服, not 客戶服務.

Word-to-word translation

  • Avoid word-to-word translation. It makes the tone stiff and unnatural.
  • Check source text in live pages. Never translate a bare list of strings without context. Split or simplify sentences. Omit descriptors to make text snappier.
  • For surfing the web with lightning speed … -> 如需快速瀏覽網頁 …, not 為了要在網頁上快速衝浪 …
  • Your life, connected through the cloud -> 透過雲端連接您的生活, not 您的生活,透過雲端連接
  • ...is configured to run... -> ...是設定來執行..., not ...執行設定...

Words and phrases to avoid

  • Avoid an unnecessarily formal tone.
  • Use 請 as necessary to make a sentence more understandable.
  • Use 您, not 你, for singular you. Use 你們, not 您們, for plural you.
  • Don't need to: 毋需 -> 無需

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language: straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, or several clear words instead of one complicated term.
  • Name only cities, countries, or regions that are not politically disputed. In examples with several regions, use equivalent references. Do not mix countries with states or continents.
  • In text and images, show diverse people, professions, educational settings, locales, economic settings.
  • Never generalize or stereotype by region, culture, age, or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names across gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • No profane or derogatory terms.
  • No slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • No terms with unconscious racial bias or terms tied to military actions, politics, or controversial historical events and eras.
  • master/slave -> primary/subordinate; 主/從; 主/從屬 -> 主要/次要
  • blacklist/whitelist -> blocklist/allowlist; 黑名單/白名單 -> 封鎖清單/允許清單
  • demilitarized zone (DMZ) -> perimeter network; 非軍事區 (DMZ) -> 周邊網路
  • hang -> stop responding; 死當 -> 停止回應
  • guys; ladies and gentlemen -> colleagues; everyone; all; 夥伴們; 先生女士們 -> 同仁; 各位; 大家
  • mother or father -> parent; 母親或父親 -> 家長
  • foreign labor -> migrant worker; 外勞 -> 移工
  • Chinese woman -> mainland cheek; 大陸妹 -> 中國籍女性

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives. Avoid compounds with gender-specific terms.
  • 門外漢 -> 外行. Avoid making generic references.
  • 男/女銷售員 -> 銷售員. Avoid specifically indicating gender.
  • 母體 -> 總體. The difference is the female prefix.
  • For generalization, use plural noun forms: 人員, 各位, 大家.
  • Never use gendered pronouns (她/他, 她們/他們, 她的/他的) in generic references. Instead: rewrite in the second or third person (您 or 其); use articles instead of a pronoun (其文件 instead of 他的文件); refer to the role (讀者, 員工, 顧客, 客戶); use 人員 or 個人.
  • If the user has the appropriate rights, he can set other users' passwords. -> A user with the appropriate rights can set other users' passwords.; 若使用者有適當的權限,他能設定其他使用者的密碼。 -> 若使用者有適當的權限,就能設定其他使用者的密碼。
  • A developer needs access to servers in his development environment, but he doesn't need access to the servers in Azure. -> Developers need access to servers in their development environments, but they don't need access to the servers in Azure.; 開發人員需要存取他的部署環境中的伺服器,但他不需要存取 Azure 中的伺服器。 -> 開發人員需要存取其部署環境中的伺服器,但不需要存取 Azure 中的伺服器。
  • When the author opens her document …. -> When the author opens the document ….; 當作者開啟她的文件時… -> 當作者開啟其文件時…
  • For a real person, use the pronouns that person prefers: 他, 她, 他們, 她們, or another. Gendered pronouns (他, 她, 他的, 她的) are OK for real people who use them.
  • Use gender-neutral language in new products and content. Existing or legacy material need not be updated.

Accessibility

Use the shared accessible content guidance for identity, readable text and input methods. Preserve the difference between selecting an object, invoking a command and performing a gesture; follow interface actions.

Abbreviations

Use an established abbreviation only when readers can recognize it in context. Preserve spaces, punctuation and case that belong to the approved form. Control line wrapping through layout; do not insert a nonbreaking space inside an identifier or remove part of a name to make it fit.

Acronyms

Keep the approved spelling and case of an acronym, including mixed-case forms. Expand it when this audience needs the explanation; an expansion is not required merely because the text is translated. Preserve identifiers exactly. See names and formats.

Adjectives

  • Do not translate every possessive adjective.
  • You organization may customize your My Site or limit the changes you can make to it—for more information, see the person who manages My Sites for your organization. -> 您的組織可自訂「我的網站」,或限制您可以做的變更;如需詳細資訊,請向組織中「我的網站」之管理員洽詢。; avoid 您的組織可自訂您的「我的網站」,或限制您可以做的變更;如需詳細資訊,請向組織中「我的網站」之管理員洽詢。
  • Avoid too many 的 in a sentence. If meaning is unaffected, omit 的.
  • The BTSLIBinterop.jar file is generated by the EnterpriseOne system by following the instructions included in the Installation Guide for the adapters. -> BTSLIBinterop.jar 檔案是遵循配接器《安裝指南》包含的指示後,由 EnterpriseOne 系統所產生。; avoid BTSLIBinterop.jar 檔案是遵循配接器的《安裝指南》包含的指示後,由 EnterpriseOne 系統所產生。
  • Leave out verbose 的 by syntactic means. Do not use the 之...的 pattern too frequently. Only if 的 cannot be left out at all, change 的...的 to 之...的.
  • Add a page to My Content on your My Site. -> 新增網頁至「我的網站」上之「我的內容」。; avoid 新增網頁至「我的網站」上的「我的內容」。

Articles

Do not add a word for every English article. Preserve distinctions such as a particular object, any eligible object or one item when the context requires them. Check whether a numeral, classifier or demonstrative is needed; Chinese does not use the English article system.

Conjunctions

  • Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone. The choice of conjunction shifts the tone from formal to conversational: 如果 sounds more conversational than 倘若.
  • If you need to convert the database, do one of the following:: 倘若需要轉換資料庫,請執行下列其中一個動作: -> 如果需要轉換資料庫,請執行下列其中一個動作:

Contractions

  • Contractions help convey a conversational tone in zh-TW too.
  • Just in case: 以防萬一 -> 以免
  • in a nutshell: 總而言之 -> 總之
  • But: 但是 / 不過 -> 但
  • already: 已經 -> 已

Font localization

Check the selected font’s script coverage, shaping, emphasis and legibility in the actual output. Do not change a font name, size or weight during translation unless the product specification calls for it. Preserve the user’s font choice and font specimens. Follow scripts and typography for rendering checks, and messages and variables for semantic markup.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a zh-TW colloquialism unless it is a perfect and natural fit for that context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, and only if the meaning is an integral part of the text.
  • If the colloquialism can be omitted without affecting the meaning, omit it.
  • Acceptable: 粉絲 (fan), 達人 (expert), 菜鳥 (novice), 宅 (geek), 一舉兩得 (to kill two birds with one stone), 事半功倍 (to yield twice the result with half the effort), 事倍功半 (to get half the result with twice the effor), 同心協力 (to pull together; to work together with one heart), 量身打造 (tailor-made).
  • Unacceptable: 冏 (ideographic emoticon for annoyance, shock, embarrassment, awkwardness, scorn), 就醬 (就這樣, That's it, That's all), LKK (老扣扣, old), 童鞋 (同學, classmate), 監介 (尷尬, embarrass, awkward), 釀 (那樣), 矮油 (whoops).

Modifiers

  • Translate modifiers into another part of speech (verb, subjective complement, adverb) for readability.
  • Invalid value for the certificate validator type. -> 憑證驗證程式類型的值無效。, not 對憑證驗證程式類型無效的值。
  • Setup is optimizing your system for better performance. -> 為提升效能,安裝程式正在將系統最佳化。, not 安裝程式正在最佳化系統,以獲得更佳效能。 better performance becomes to increase performance.
  • For more effective troubleshooting, use this error message. -> 為使疑難排解作業更有效率,請使用此錯誤訊息。, not 為獲得更有效的移難排解,請使用此錯誤訊息。
  • In Chinese the modified element always follows the modifier, whatever its kind or length. Readers get lost when the modifier is too long.
  • Avoid literal word-for-word translation and run-on sentences with stacked modifiers.
  • When a string is a relative clause, do not just use a comma to separate the modified and the modifier.
  • The Chart Web Part is a Web Part that can be created and added to a SharePoint site to enable users to view performance and other types of information at a glance. -> 您可以建立圖表網頁組件並新增至 SharePoint 網站,讓使用者對於效能及其他類型的資訊能夠一目了然。, not 圖表網頁組件,可以建立並新增至 SharePoint 網站的網頁組件,讓使用者對於效能及其他類型的資訊能夠一目了然。
  • This document describes a number of the new features, and gives details about scenarios in which they may be useful. -> 本文件將描述一些新功能,並且詳細說明適合使用這些功能的案例。, not 本文件將描述一些新功能,並且詳細說明這些功能可能很有用的案例。

Nouns

Do not copy English plural inflection mechanically. 們 can mark a group of people, but it is not a universal plural suffix for every noun. Numerals, classifiers and demonstratives can express number or scope. Omit redundant marking only when the intended reference remains clear.

Prepositions

  • Use prepositions properly. Do not omit them or change word order under English influence.
  • Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable.
  • Translate the same preposition differently by context. for is not always 針對; on is not always 上.
  • Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S -> 適用於 Xbox Series X|S 的儲存擴充卡. Here for becomes 適用於.
  • For external users, please contact your system administrator. -> 若是外部使用者,請與您的系統管理員連絡。 Here for becomes 若是.

Pronouns

  • Do not translate every pronoun. If the meaning is unaffected, omit pronouns.
  • Add a page to My Content on your My Site. -> 新增網頁至「我的網站」上之「我的內容」。, not 新增網頁至您的「我的網站」上之「我的內容」。 Omit your for fluency.
  • This document describes a number of the new features, and gives details about scenarios in which they may be useful. -> 本文件將描述一些新功能,並且詳細說明適合使用這些功能的案例。, not 本文件將描述一些新功能,並且詳細說明它們可能很有用的案例。
  • Avoid the non-human pronoun 它. If necessary, use 其.
  • For clarity, repeat the exact noun in place of the pronoun where useful.

Punctuation

Use these marks for newly written Chinese prose. Exact interface labels and literal syntax keep their required punctuation; do not apply prose substitutions inside paths, code or tokens.

Function Prose mark Code points
Full stop 。 U+3002
Comma , U+FF0C
Enumeration comma 、 U+3001
Colon : U+FF1A
Semicolon ; U+FF1B
Question mark ? U+FF1F
Exclamation mark ! U+FF01
Parentheses () U+FF08, U+FF09
Quotation 「」 U+300C, U+300D
Inner quotation 『』 U+300E, U+300F
Book title 《》 U+300A, U+300B

Use paired U+2026 characters (……) for an omission in prose. Preserve the ellipsis of an actual interface label. Do not add dots to every progress message.

Chinese prose can use a two-em dash (——); it is not prohibited because it resembles a character. Keep a range distinct from subtraction: – is U+2013 EN DASH, while − is U+2212 MINUS SIGN. In a sentence, 至 can express a range without ambiguous punctuation. Literal mathematical or command syntax follows the format being documented.

Keep punctuation outside an identifier unless it belongs to that identifier. Character width does not tell you how many bytes its encoding uses. See scripts and typography for mixed-script layout and line-breaking checks.

Sentence fragments

  • Use sentence fragments where possible. They are short, friendly, and to the point.
  • Use the following steps.: 依照下列步驟... -> 請看以下...
  • Please refer to the diagram: 請參考下圖 -> 如圖所示

Singular and plural

  • If a generic English word stays untranslated, remove the plural s and capitalize the first letter.

  • No space around Chinese full-width punctuation marks.

  • The BTSLIBinterop.jar file is generated by the EnterpriseOne system by following the instructions included in the Installation Guide for the adapters. -> BTSLIBinterop.jar 檔案是遵循配接器《安裝指南》包含的指示後,由 EnterpriseOne 系統所產生。

Syntax

  • English uses passive voice frequently. zh-TW avoids it. Many passive sentences sound unnatural and hurt readability. Rephrase the source in the active voice.
  • The Chart Web Part is a Web Part that can be created and added to a SharePoint site to enable users to view performance and other types of information at a glance. -> 您可以建立圖表網頁組件並新增至 SharePoint 網站,讓使用者對於效能及其他類型的資訊能夠一目了然。, not 圖表網頁組件可以被建立並新增至 SharePoint 網站的網頁組件,讓使用者對於效能及其他類型的資訊能夠一目了然。

  • Using Paint -> 使用小畫家, not 正在使用小畫家
  • Selecting and editing objects -> 選取及編輯物件, not 正在選取及編輯物件

Localization considerations

  • The language must have the look and feel of a product originally written in Traditional Chinese: idiomatic syntax and terminology, high terminological consistency.

Applications, products, and features

Preserve approved product names, identifiers and version strings exactly. Do not add a decimal component to a version or translate a protected name. Use names and formats for shared rules.

Localization rules for special URLs

  • If the URL is embedded in the text and the destination page is already localized, the translation must match the actual page.
  • If the URL is embedded in the text and the destination page is not localized, translate the link text and add (英文) at the end so users know the target is unlocalized.
  • (英文) does not refer to the original English text. Add these characters as is.
  • If the URL is not embedded but the download location or destination is stated explicitly, the translation must match the actual page when it is already localized.
  • If the URL is not embedded but stated explicitly and the page is not localized, translate the link text and add (英文) at the end.
  • The Windows reference document titled "User Guide," which is available for download at http://www.microsoft.com -> Windows 參考文件<使用者指南> (英文) 可於 http://www.microsoft.com 下載。
  • If the URL leads to a machine-translated article, translate the link text yourself and add (機器翻譯) at the end.

Reference materials without translations

  • For a book not translated into Chinese, keep the title in English.
  • This article contains comments, corrections, and information in "Introducing Software Localization in Microsoft". -> 在 "Introducing Software Localization in Microsoft" 一書中,此文章包含相關的註解、修正和資訊。
  • For chapters and sections not translated in the book, keep them in English.
  • For information, view the "Industry Today" in "Introducing Software Localization in Microsoft". -> 如需詳細資訊,請檢視 "Introducing Software Localization in Microsoft" 中的 "Industry Today" 一節。
  • If a passage is excerpted from an untranslated book, keep the original text and add your own translation in parentheses.
  • Terminology management is the key to the success of the project. We need to start to collect the terminologies as early as possible in order to keep the content consistent. -> Terminology management is the key to the success of the project. We need to start to collect the terminologies as early as possible in order to keep the content consistent. (詞彙管理是專案成功的要素。我們必須儘早開始收集詞彙,才能讓內容保持一致)

Software considerations

Check the localized text in its actual interface using the localization review.

Error messages

Preserve state, count, negation and obligation when translating a message. Follow messages and variables for placeholder names, markup and permitted reordering; local grammar never authorizes a parser change.

  • Error messages tell the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt action or state that a reboot is needed.
  • Make the target natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • The US product often phrases the same meaning differently. Use one standard translation.
  • Press F1 to get Help, If you want Help press F1, To get Help press F1 -> 按 F1 取得更多說明
  • Not enough memory, Insufficient memory, There is not enough memory -> 記憶體不足
  • Save changes to %1?, Do you want to save changes to %1? -> 是否要儲存對 %1 所做的變更?
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate messages as they appear in the US product.
  • Standardize standard phrases. The US sometimes uses different forms for the same thing.
  • Cannot …, Could not …, Failed to …, Failure of … -> 無法...
  • Cannot delete the file. -> 無法刪除檔案。
  • Failed to delete the file. -> 無法刪除檔案。

  • ... is not available, ... is unavailable -> 無法使用...
  • Internet access is not available. -> 無法使用網際網路。 If the subject is a person, this may be 無法接通, 未上線, or 沒有空, depending on context.

  • A measure word such as 位, 部, 本, 個 is needed if the placeholder means <number>.

  • No space is needed if the placeholder is replaced with a localized string.
  • Click the Finish button to exit the [Wizard]. -> 按一下 [\[]完成[\]] 按鈕以結束 [Wizard]。 [Wizard] is replaced with a localized name, so keep no space between 結束 and [Wizard].

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands, or dialog boxes are keyboard shortcuts.
  • Slim characters (I, l, t, r, f): allowed. Always convert the lowercase letter to uppercase. Exit -> 結束(&T)
  • Characters with downstrokes (g, j, y, p, q): allowed. Always convert the lowercase letter to uppercase. Replay -> 重播(&P)

  • No keyboard shortcut assigned when no more characters are available: minor options only.
  • Access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to reach UI controls with text labels. Access keys are assigned to top-level controls so the user can move through the UI quickly with the keyboard. Example: F in Alt+F. In UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
  • Key tip: the letter or number that appears in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization the key tip is the last character after the ` character. Example: Home`H
  • Shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to perform a common action without going through the UI. Not available for every command. Examples: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys are used with the Ctrl key. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys F1 through F12 are usually the best choices.

  • About... -> 關於(&B)..., not 關於...(&B)
  • Hyperl&ink...`H -> 超連結(&I)...`H, not 超連結(&I)`H...

  • If a source string is only numbers, a single letter, or a punctuation mark, keep it as is.
  • 1 -> 1, not 1(&1)
  • 100% -> 100%, not 100% (&1)

User interface

Use the exact Traditional Chinese label shown by the application. Follow interface actions and mechanics for action verbs and label formatting. A product’s established bracket convention may be needed in its own resource strings; do not generalize it to every document or move text outside semantic tags. Preserve property names, paths and URLs as literal data.

English pronunciation

  • Pronounce unlocalized English terms and product names the English way.
  • When zh-TW has an established pronunciation for a common term, use the local pronunciation.
  • SecurID: [sı'kjuər aı di:], 讀成英文 Secure ID
  • .NET: [dot net], . reads as dot
  • Skype: [skaip]. Product names are always pronounced as in the source language.
  • Azure: [ˋæʒɚ]. Product names are always pronounced as in the source language.
  • If an acronym is pronounced like a real word, read it as a common English word: RADIUS is [ˋredɪəs].
  • Use only approved acronyms and abbreviations.
  • Do not use abbreviated forms of fictitious names that appear elsewhere in full form.
  • Other abbreviations that cannot be read as real words are pronounced letter by letter: HTML is H,T,M,L.
  • URLs: leave out http:// and read the rest of the URL entirely.
  • Pronounce www as triple w or w,w,w.
  • The dot can be pronounced the zh-TW way as 點.
  • http://www.microsoft.com/tw: w,w,w 點 Microsoft 點 com 斜線 tw, 英文詞彙請直接按照英文讀
  • Most punctuation marks are implied by the sound of voice: ? ! : ; ,
  • Pronounce the en dash – as a comma, a short pause.
  • Pronounce special characters / \ ˘ < > + - with the approved zh-TW translations.

Tone

  • Match the tone to the target audience: informal, playful, inspiring for consumer products and games; formal, informative, factual for technical texts.
  • zh-TW tone: semi-formal and friendly.
  • Never talk down to users. Write as if helping a friend get started.

Local usage

Use Taiwan terminology and polite 您 in product messages. Preserve substitution tokens, check Chinese/Latin spacing, and test plural-message output through the target format instead of blindly deleting source branches.
