Yoruba style guide

This brief supplement covers voice and text handling. It is not a complete grammar. Apply the shared localization review and house voice; adaptations are acknowledged in credits.

Local usage

Match formal or casual Yoruba to the surface and audience. Use clear wording and consistent technical terms without mechanically preserving English sentence structure.

Keep the chosen form of address consistent within a surface. Write unfamiliar abbreviations in full and preserve protected names. Have a proficient Yoruba reviewer settle uncertain terminology and tone rather than accepting a translation-memory match without context.

Character and interface review

Preserve underdots and tone marks in ordinary Yoruba text. ẹ, ọ and ṣ are not interchangeable with e, o and s. A character may also carry a tone mark, as in ẹ́ and ọ̀. Test these combinations in the actual font and check that copying retains the marks. See scripts and typography.

Review whole sentences after values are substituted. Do not derive plural messages or pronoun choices from an English template alone. Check text expansion and message state in the running interface; spelling that looks acceptable in a plain text editor still needs a rendered check.
