Odia (India) style guide

Voice

  • Clear, friendly, concise. Everyday conversational language, not formal or technical register.
  • Short, easy-to-read sentences. Active voice.
  • Individualized, pleasant explanations. No slang. Careful with colloquialisms. Stay professional.
  • Address the user as you, first and second person. No third-person user.
  • No corporate we.
  • Match source intent, not source words. Non-standard translations OK when they keep the intent.
  • Never translate literally if the result is irrelevant to the customer.
  • Technical terms for technical audiences. Common words for consumers.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms, product names.
  • en App: use app, not application or program.
  • en Pick, choose: pick in fun, less formal, light-weight contexts (pick a color, not choose a color); choose in formal contexts. Avoid select unless the UI needs it.
  • en Drive: for any drive type. Use the specific drive type if needed.
  • en Get: OK for obtain, come into possession of. Avoid for other meanings.
  • en Info: use in most contexts, and when pointing elsewhere (for more info, see <link>). Use information when it fits better.
  • en PC: for personal computing devices. Use computer for PCs and Macs together.
  • en …is in process: or …ପ୍ରକ୍ରିୟାରେ ଅଛି, usage ପ୍ରକ୍ରିୟାରତତ

Transliteration

  • Use terms people use in daily life, even in transliterated form.
  • When no simple, easy-to-understand Odia word exists, use the English word in transliteration.
  • Transliterate technical words when the regional language has no correct word. Keep plain English to a minimum and prefer transliteration. Prepare a list and discuss it.
  • The transliterated term must be one target users use in daily life.

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Plain language. Straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word to a three-syllable word, several clear words to one complicated term.
  • No politically disputed cities, countries, regions in examples.
  • Use equivalent references in one example. No mixing countries with states or continents.
  • Show diverse people, professions, educational settings, locales, economic settings, in text and images.
  • No generalizing or stereotyping by region, culture, age, gender, not even positively.
  • For job roles use names reflecting varied gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • No profane or derogatory terms.
  • No slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • No terms with unconscious racial bias, or tied to military actions, politics, controversial history.

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives for common terms. Avoid compounds with gender-specific terms (ପୁରୁଷୁଷ, ସ୍ତ୍ରୀ, ଇତ୍ୟାଦିୟାଦି).
  • ବାଳକ ଛାତ୍ର / ାଳକ ଛାତ୍ର / ବାଳିକା ଛାତ୍ରାଳିକା ଛାତ୍ର -> ଛାତ୍ର. Do not use gender-specific terms for student. Gender-neutral terms widely used in Odia help here.
  • ପୁରୁଷ ୁଷ ଇଞ୍ଜିନିୟର / / ମହିଳା ଇଞ୍ଜିନିୟର -> ଇଞ୍ଜିନିୟର. Use the translation for engineer without naming a gender.
  • ମହିଳା ଡ୍ରାଇଭର୍ / ପୁରୁଷ ୁଷ ଡ୍ରାଇଭର୍ -> ଡ୍ରାଇଭର୍. Do not attach gender to a designation. Use the gender-neutral term for Driver.
  • ମହିଳା କବି ି / ପୁରୁଷ କବିି -> କବି. Do not judge literary capability by gender.
  • For generalizations use plural noun forms, for example ଲୋକ, ବ୍ୟକ୍ତି, ଛାତ୍ର, ଇତ୍ୟାଦି.
  • ଲୋକକ -> ଲୋକମାନେ. Odia has no gender-specific pronouns. Use the plural form when addressing people at large.
  • ଛାତ୍ର -> ଛାତ୍ରମାନେ. Odia has no gender-specific pronouns. Use the plural form when addressing people at large.
  • Gender-specific pronouns are not used in Odia.
  • For he/she use ସେ.
  • For him/her use ତାଙ୍କୁ.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities. No words that imply pity, such as ଏକ ଅକ୍ଷମତା କିମ୍ବା ା ଯେକୌଣସି ରୋଗରେ ପୀଡିତଗରେ ପୀଡିତ.
  • Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
  • en handicapped -> person with a disability; or ଭିନ୍ନକ୍ଷମ or ଦିବ୍ୟାଙ୍ଗ -> ଅକ୍ଷମତା ଥିବା ବ୍ୟକ୍ତିା ବ୍ୟକ୍ତି

  • Use generic verbs that fit all input methods and devices. In procedures and instructions avoid verbs that make no sense with alternative input methods.
  • en Click -> Select; or କ୍ଲିକ୍ କରନ୍ତୁନ୍ତୁ -> ଚୟନୟନ କରନ୍ତୁନ୍ତୁ
  • Short paragraphs, simple sentence structure. Aim for one verb per sentence.
  • Read text aloud. Imagine it spoken by a screen reader.
  • Spell out words like ଏବଂ, ସହିତ ଏବଂ ସମ୍ୱନ୍ଧରେ. Screen readers misread &, +, ~.

Abbreviations

  • You may need to abbreviate words in the UI, mainly button or option names, for lack of space.
  • ଉଦାହରଣଣ -> ଉ.ଦା.
  • ବିଶେଷ୍ୟୟ -> ବି.ି.
  • Use a non-breaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) in any abbreviation.
  • Where non-breaking spaces cannot be used, in Help files for example, write the abbreviation without a space so one letter does not move to the next line.
  • The first letter of the word plus . marks an abbreviated form in Odia. Sometimes the first two letters, or the first and last letter, are used.

Acronyms

  • Acronyms are words made of the initial letters of major parts of a compound term: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • At first use, spell out or transliterate the words of the acronym and keep the English version in brackets. Later in the text keep only the spelled-out form. Give the meaning of the words for the reader.

  • Many abbreviations and acronyms are standardized and stay untranslated. Add the full English spelling only when the acronym needs explaining to speakers of another language. For a common acronym the spelled-out form only confuses users, so use the acronym alone.
  • Do not localize or spell out: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization).
  • If you are unsure what an acronym stands for, contact the linguist responsible for this guide.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives describe or modify a person or object and highlight its properties. In Odia adjectives usually precede nouns but follow pronouns.
  • ଖରାପ ପିଲା. ାପ ପିଲା. Here ଖରାପାପ is an adjective.
  • ଭଲ ପିଲା. Here ଭଲ is an adjective.
  • Possessive adjectives, subject pronoun then possessive adjective: ମୁଁ -> ମୋର; ତୁ -> ତୁମର; ଆମେ -> ଆମ୍ଭେ; ତୁମେ -> ତୁମ୍ଭେ
  • en That's my folder. -> or ତାହା ମୋର ଫୋଲ୍ଡର୍ ଅଟେ. ମୋର is the adjective showing ownership of the folder.
  • en What is your phone number? -> or ତାହା ଆପଣଙ୍କର ଫୋନ୍ ନମ୍ଵର୍ ଅଟେ?. The possessive adjective ଆପଣଙ୍କର modifies the noun phrase ଫୋନ୍ ନମ୍ଵର୍.

Articles

  • English error messages vary in their use of articles, demonstrative and possessive pronouns. Be consistent in Odia.
  • Odia has no articles.
  • Two demonstrative pronouns occur with inanimate nouns: e-this and se-that. Other variants are e/ehi/se/sei.
  • Possessive pronouns are mu, tumara, Tara, eha, amar.
  • en File already exists, The file already exists, This file already exists -> or ଫାଇଲ୍ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ଅଛିୁ ଅଛି. In complete sentences use determiners consistently even when the source does not.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds. Unintuitive compounds are an intelligibility and usability problem.
  • Express the relationship among compound components verbally instead of building a long compound.
  • Noun and verb compounds are frequent in English. Not all languages compound to create complex meanings.
  • An Odia compound noun is not a juxtaposition of two independent words but a construction with an underlying semantic structure.
  • Most compounds are subordinate constructions, where one constituent modifies the other, and are endocentric. The second type is a coordinate construction.
  • Odia words fall into three etymological types: Tatasom, tadbhava, desaja.

Gender

  • Gender is not grammatical in Odia. Only animate subjects distinguish gender. Sex indicates gender, marked by qualifying terms, different words, or a suffix.
  • Recognize the audience's sensitivity to male and female stereotypes. Use language as neutral as possible instead of stressing gender differences. The neutral approach also covers scenarios, comparisons, examples, illustrations, metaphors.
  • Balance roles and functions between men and women: active vs. passive, leading vs. secondary, technical vs. non-technical professions. Base scenarios, pictures, metaphors and comparisons on areas and attributes common to both genders.
  • Use a general term that covers both genders, such as people, users, persons, instead of naming the two genders separately.
  • Avoid sentences that refer to a single person of unknown gender. Make the subject plural. Where a single-person reference is unavoidable, do not use he or she, him or her, his or hers.
  • Generally avoid slashes to combine both genders, with the exceptions below.
  • Use a neutral noun: ବ୍ୟକ୍ତି,ନେତାତା, ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀ ଷ୍ଠୀ, for concept descriptions and explanations.
  • Combine both genders in one common word: ନେତୃତ୍ୱତୃତ୍ୱ,ଦକ୍ଷ,କର୍ମଚାରୀୀ,ବ୍ୟବହାରକାରୀୀ
  • ସେ only in exceptional cases such as License Terms, and sometimes in tables (headers, column or row titles).
  • Odia does not distinguish gender on nouns and pronouns. There is no grammatical gender, only lexical gender.

  • Odia has six cases: nominative, accusative, genitive, instrumental, ablative, locative.
  • Genitive -ro: ଆଙ୍କର,ମାନଙ୍କର, ତାଙ୍କର (in plural, honorific)
  • The genitive is adjectival in function, realized as -ro in the singular and -nko/-nko-ro in the plural.
  • A noun in the genitive always collocates with other nouns and generally means possession.
  • The oblique base of the pronouns serves as the base for all other cases and functions as genitive in isolation.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not swap a source colloquialism for an Odia one unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, and only when the meaning is integral to the text.
  • If the colloquialism can go without changing the meaning, omit it.

Modifiers

  • Modifiers are words, phrases or clauses that provide description. In Odia adverbs and adjectives prototypically work as modifiers, and other constituents can too.

  • Bangla and Assamese are neighboring sister languages, but Odia has its own flavor and is not confused with them. Bangla and Odia are mutually intelligible, which does not stop Odia from being a separate and distinct language.

Punctuation

  • Bulleted lists use the same sign as English.
  • Comma , separates several names or items written consecutively, and marks short pauses.
  • The comma marks the smallest interruption in continuity of thought or sentence structure. A few rules of use are almost obligatory. Otherwise use good judgement.
  • Colon uses the same sign as English. : usually follows an interjection or exclamation to mark strong feeling.

  • Hyphen - divides words between syllables, links parts of a compound word, and connects parts of an inverted or imperative verb form. Odia uses the same sign as English: ଇ-ମେଲ୍, ଡ୍ରପ୍-ଡାଉନ୍
  • En dash – (Alt+0150) structures the sentence, marks a clause that sums up the previous clauses, and divides the sentence more clearly. It is the minus sign (space before the numeral: 225 – 17), marks negative values (no space before the numeral: –9 °C), and marks number ranges such as page numbers: 1–10
  • Em dash is not used in the standard form of writing.
  • Ellipsis use is identical and not specific; no protocol exists. When a story, novel or other literature stays incomplete in one edition or chapter and the rest is expected in the next version, write Continue (କ୍ରମଶଃ... ଃ...) at the end.
  • ଆଇକନ୍ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ କରନ୍ତୁ...ନ୍ତୁ...
  • Use the ellipsis only when the writing stays incomplete and the remainder comes later in the next page, chapter, edition or version, with words like continue/so on (କ୍ରମଶଃ/ଏହିପରି...ି...). In exceptional cases, where space is short and there is much content to include, use ellipses …
  • en Continue.... -> or କ୍ରମଶଃ... ଃ..., when writings such as story, novel and other literature remain incomplete in one edition or chapter.
  • Period . marks a full stop at the end of declarative sentences and other complete statements, and after many abbreviations: ମୋତେ ପୁନର୍ବାର ଏହି ପ୍ରୋଗ୍ରାମ୍‌ ପାଇଁ ସତର୍କତା ଦେଖାନ୍ତୁ ନାହିଁ.ଖାନ୍ତୁ ନାହିଁ.
  • Odia has its own full stop mark ।, placed at the end of declarative sentences and other complete statements.
  • Always use the local । between adjoining messages, for example where a string is two sentences or phrases.
  • End a long or punctuated sentence with the local full stop. For translation, follow the English exactly and replace the full stop with the local version wherever it occurs.
  • Any full sentence, with full or reduced grammar, takes a final full stop or other punctuation.
  • Sentence fragments, headers, button names, menu items and other non-sentences take no full stop, exclamation mark or question mark, except some TTS strings and single-word past-tense strings or sentences in Tizen noti-pops.
  • Strings with design type NPBODY never take a full stop, even a full sentence.
  • The full stop belongs inside parentheses that enclose an independent sentence. When the enclosed matter ends an including sentence, the period goes outside the parentheses.
  • Odia has two quotation marks: single inverted commas ‘… ’ and double inverted commas “… ”. In Odia they are called ଉଦ୍ଧୃତି ଚିହ୍ନ/ ିହ୍ନ/udhruti chinnha/. They come as a pair of opening and closing marks in either style.
  • “… ” denotes speech or a quotation.
  • '… ' denotes speech or a quotation.
  • Parentheses or brackets that enclose an independent sentence take the period inside. When the enclosed matter ends an including sentence, the period goes outside: florelli instead on rewriting the paragraph. (I had encountered this intransigence on another occasion.)

Subjunctive

  • The subjunctive expresses an action or state in the context of the speaker's reaction to it: doubt, uncertainty, denial, desire or wish, commands, reactions, or a strong emotional attitude.
  • In Odia the subjunctive mood pairs the past tense with hoithante (ହୋଇଥାନ୍ତେ).

  • A symbol is an object, picture, written word, sound, or mark that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention.

Verbs

  • Use simple tenses. Simple present by default. Avoid future tense unless the event really is in the future and simple present does not work. Simple past for events already done.
  • An English verb can be a loan word in the target language, following the target language's syntactic and morphological rules.

Localization considerations

  • Adapt translated text to local language, customs, standards.
  • The language must have the look and feel of text originally written in Odia, with idiomatic syntax and terminology, and high terminological consistency.

Accessibility

  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Hardware and software components give a flexible, customizable UI, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.
  • Some accessible products and services are not available in Odia-speaking markets. Double-check.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are often trademarked, so they are rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too (IntelliSense™).
  • Verify a name is translatable and unprotected before you translate it.
  • There are no specific Odia rules on trademarking of applications, products and features.
  • Version numbers always contain a period (Version 4.2). en WCAG 6.2 -> or WCAG 6.2
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but are not the same thing.
  • Product, feature and component names often sit in version strings as they appear in the software.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information. Check approved terminology for the correct translations.

Error messages

  • Error messages tell the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or say a reboot is needed.
  • Make the target natural and empathetic, not robot-like.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes are keyboard shortcuts. They help the user work faster. Examples: New, Cancel, Options.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are key combinations such as ALT+F or Ctrl+S that move focus to a menu, command, or control without the mouse.
  • Odia follows the InScript keyboard. Odia is supported by several phonetic editors, transliteration software, and text editors.
  • Do not localize the InScript keyboard. A localized version would not match other Indic languages, and transliteration support in native search engines, text editors and mail websites means the keyboard is little used outside desktop publishing.
  • Soft keyboards are used instead where transliteration complexity is a problem.
  • Slim characters (I, l, t, r, f) allowed as keyboard shortcuts, but Odia characters cannot be called slim compared with Roman ones.
  • Characters with downstrokes (g, j, y, p, q): not allowed. Odia characters are written with a kind of downward movement, not a simple down stroke.
  • Extended characters: not allowed. Odia conjuncts, combinations of two consonants, cannot be shortcuts. Odia simple letters (ଫ, ହ) do not count as extensions of other simple letters.
  • An additional letter in brackets after the item name: not allowed. Such letters, where they occur, cannot be shortcuts.
  • A number in brackets after the item name: allowed. Numbers can be keyboard shortcuts.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name: not allowed. Punctuation marks are not needed as shortcuts; many clear simple letters serve that purpose.
  • Duplicate keyboard shortcuts when no other character is available: allowed, with instruction.
  • No keyboard shortcut assigned when no characters remain (minor options only): not allowed.
  • Only single stroke characters can be shortcuts. Odia has only 19 single stroke characters, so numbers are allowed too.
  • Preferred shortcut characters, not case-sensitive: ବ, ହ, ଗ, ଦ, ଜ, ଡ, ପ, ର, କ, ତ, ଚ, ଟ, ୟ, ମ, ନ, ବ, ଲ, ସ, ଯଯ
  • Allowed shortcut characters, not case-sensitive: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • Access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to reach UI controls with text labels. Assigned to top-level controls for fast keyboard movement through the UI. Example: F in Alt+F. In UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with Alt.
  • Key tip: the letter or number shown in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization it is the last character after the ` character. Example: Home`H
  • Shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to do a common action without going through the UI. Not available for every command. Examples: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys use Ctrl. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys F1 through F12 are usually the best choices.

  • Tone should be formal. Address the intended user with the appropriate tone, level of grammar and formality, and reading level. Keep it easy to understand.
