Greek style guide

Voice

  • Write for scanning first, reading second. Keep it simple.
  • Choose words for the audience: technical terms for technical audiences, common words for consumers.
  • Keep the style clear, friendly and concise. Friendly does not mean colloquial. Keep a professional tone.
  • Use contemporary style and terminology, close to everyday speech, not formal technical language.
  • Be informal. Be friendly. Talk like a real person, not a PC. Talk directly to the user (use of "we"). Use humor. Use colloquialism or culture-specific phrases.
  • Vary from standard translations when needed, but keep to approved terminology and to the intent of the source.
  • Do not translate literally.

Flexibility

  • Modify or rewrite strings so they sound natural to Greek customers. Understand the whole intention of the sentences, paragraphs and pages, then rewrite as if you write the content yourself. Remove unnecessary content.
  • en Host meetings of all kinds from anywhere Virtually connect one-on-one, lead a team training, or host an interactive webinar for up to 1,000 attendees. -> el Διοργανώστε συσκέψεις κάθε είδους από κάθε τοποθεσία Πραγματοποιήστε διαδικτυακές ατομικές συναντήσεις, εκπαιδεύστε μια ομάδα ή φιλοξενήστε διαδραστικά webinar με έως και 1.000 συμμετέχοντες.
  • en Share files, coauthor, and edit content simultaneously. Automatically save everyone's changes, ideate together in the Whiteboard app, and more. -> el Κοινοποιήστε αρχεία, κάντε σύνταξη από κοινού και ταυτόχρονη επεξεργασία περιεχομένου. Αποθηκεύστε αυτόματα τις αλλαγές όλων των χρηστών, ανταλλάξτε ιδέες στην εφαρμογή Whiteboard και πολλά άλλα.
  • en Collaborate with people outside your organization Chat, meet, coauthor docs, and use apps to collaborate seamlessly with external partners, removing obstacles and strengthening relationships. -> el Συνεργαστείτε με άτομα εκτός του οργανισμού σας Συνομιλήστε, συναντηθείτε, συντάξτε από κοινού έγγραφα και χρησιμοποιήστε εφαρμογές για να συνεργαστείτε χωρίς προβλήματα με εξωτερικούς συνεργάτες, καταργώντας τα εμπόδια και ενισχύοντας τις σχέσεις.
  • en Photo Fuse works best with photos that are similar. -> el Το κολάζ φωτογραφιών λειτουργεί καλύτερα με παρόμοιες φωτογραφίες.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms and product names.
  • Some English terms are dominant in everyday use. Adopt them for the voice alongside the standard approved terms so the text sounds casual and less formal.
  • en PC: existing Ηλεκτρονικός υπολογιστής, preferred PC
  • en email: existing μήνυμα ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου, preferred e-mail or μήνυμα e-mail. Use the voice term only in specific products; two different translations inside the same product would cause obvious inconsistencies.
  • en product key: existing αριθμός - κλειδί προϊόντος, preferred κλειδί προϊόντος
  • en download: existing πραγματοποιώ λήψη, preferred κατεβάζω (only as a verb)
  • en upload: existing πραγματοποιώ αποστολή, preferred ανεβάζω (only as a verb)
  • en ID: existing αναγνωριστικό, preferred ID or αναγνωριστικό
  • en site: existing τοποθεσία, preferred site or τοποθεσία

  • en sign in: existing είσοδος, εισέρχομαι, preferred σύνδεση, συνδέομαι
  • en sign out: existing έξοδος, εξέρχομαι, preferred αποσύνδεση, αποσυνδέομαι
  • Use short, everyday Greek words. They carry the meaning concisely and directly.
  • en radio -> ράδιο, as an equivalent of «ραδιόφωνο»
  • en camera -> κάμερα, as an equivalent of «φωτογραφική μηχανή»
  • en window -> παράθυρο, as an equivalent of «παράθυρο διαλόγου»

  • en repair -> διόρθωση, as an equivalent of «επιδιόρθωση»

  • For shortened English words such as app or info there is no shorter Greek equivalent. Use the full form in Greek whatever the source shows: «εφαρμογή», «πληροφορίες».

Words and phrases to avoid

  • Choose words that are not old-fashioned, too formal or archaic.
  • en attempt: avoid απόπειρα, use προσπάθεια
  • en success: avoid επίτευξη, use επιτυχία
  • en allow for: avoid παρέχει τη δυνατότητα, use επιτρέπει

  • en sign in: avoid πραγματοποιώ είσοδο, use συνδέομαι
  • en sign out: avoid πραγματοποιώ έξοδο, use αποσυνδέομαι
  • Use brief phrases with simple syntax. Avoid words and verbs that make the syntax complicated, formal or wordy. Keep the phrase brief, complete, accurate and grammatical.
  • Use the present tense.
  • Use the active voice. Use the passive voice only to avoid a wordy or awkward construction, when the action rather than the doer is the focus, when the subject is unknown, and in error messages where the active voice would blame the user.
  • Avoid relative clauses when you can drop them without affecting the meaning.
  • en Specifies the action that the server will take when it encounters different error types during processing. -> avoid Καθορίζει την ενέργεια στην οποία προβαίνει ο διακομιστής όταν αντιμετωπίζει διάφορους τύπους σφαλμάτων κατά τη διάρκεια της επεξεργασίας., preferred Καθορίζει την ενέργεια του διακομιστή όταν αντιμετωπίζει διάφορους τύπους σφαλμάτων κατά την επεξεργασία.

Word-for-word translation

  • Avoid word-for-word translation. Check the source text in the live pages. Split text into different sentences when that simplifies it. Omit descriptors to make the text snappier.
  • en ...are scheduled to run during... -> correct …έχουν προγραμματιστεί να εκτελεστούν κατά…, incorrect …είναι προγραμματισμένα να τρέξουν κατά…
  • en ...is configured to run... -> correct …με ρυθμισμένες παραμέτρους να τρέξουν…, incorrect …οι παράμετροι έχουν ρυθμιστεί ώστε να εκτελεστεί…

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language. Use straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, or several clear words over one complicated term.
  • Be mindful when you refer to parts of the world. Do not name politically disputed cities, countries or regions. Use equivalent references; do not mix countries with states or continents.
  • In text and images, represent diverse perspectives and circumstances. Show people in many professions, educational settings, locales and economic settings.
  • Do not generalize or stereotype by region, culture, age or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names that reflect a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • No profane or derogatory terms.
  • No slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • No terms with unconscious racial bias, and none tied to military actions, politics or controversial historical events and eras.
  • en use primary/subordinate, not master/slave; el use πρωτεύων/δευτερεύων, not κύριος/υπηρέτης
  • en use perimeter network, not demilitarized zone (DMZ); el use περιμετρικό δίκτυο, not αποστρατιωτικοποιημένη ζώνη
  • en use stop responding, not hang; el use σταματά να αποκρίνεται, not κρεμάει/κρασάρει
  • en use expert, not guru; el use ειδικός, not γκουρού
  • en use colleagues; everyone; all, not guys; ladies and gentlemen; el use συνάδελφοι, όλοι, not κύριοι, κυρίες και κύριοι
  • en use parent, not mother or father; el use γονέας, γονιός, not μητέρα ή πατέρας

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives for common terms.
  • The general use of the masculine gender in Greek covers people of all genders and poses no issue. Where applicable, rephrase with the plural form of nouns or with the passive voice instead of the active.
  • Rephrase in the passive voice: use Tα έγγραφα διαβιβάζονται στις αρμόδιες υπηρεσίες, not O πρόεδρος διαβιβάζει τα έγγραφα στις αρμόδιες υπηρεσίες
  • Use an alternative generic term: use Εκπαιδευτικοί, not Καθηγητής - καθηγήτρια
  • use Συνεργείο καθαρισμού, not Καθαρίστριες (cleaning staff vs. cleaning ladies)
  • use Νοσηλευτικό προσωπικό, not Νοσοκόμα (healthcare staff/worker/professional vs. nurse)
  • For generalizations, use plural noun forms, e.g. άτομα, άνθρωποι, φοιτητές.
  • No gendered pronouns (αυτή, εκείνης, αυτός, εκείνου, του, της) in generic references. Instead: rewrite in the second person plural (courtesy form); rewrite with a plural noun and pronoun; use articles instead of a pronoun (τοέγγραφο instead of τοέγγραφότου); refer to a person's role (αναγνώστης, εργαζόμενος, πελάτης); use άτομο or άνθρωπος.
  • en use Developers need access to servers in their development environments, but they don't need access to the servers in Azure., not A developer needs access to servers in his development environment, but he doesn't need access to the servers in Azure.; el use Οι προγραμματιστές χρειάζονται πρόσβαση σε διακομιστές στα περιβάλλοντα προγραμματισμού τους, αλλά δεν χρειάζονται πρόσβαση στους διακομιστές στο Azure., not Ένας προγραμματιστής χρειάζεται πρόσβαση σε διακομιστές στα περιβάλλοντα προγραμματισμού του, αλλά δεν χρειάζεται πρόσβαση στους διακομιστές στο Azure.
  • en use To call someone, select the person's name, select Make a phone call, and then choose the number you'd like to dial., not To call someone, select his name, select Make a phone call, and then select his number.; el use Για να καλέσετε κάποιο άτομο, επιλέξτε το όνομα του ατόμου και, στη συνέχεια, επιλέξτε "Κλήση"., not Για να καλέσετε κάποιον, επιλέξτε το όνομά του και, στη συνέχεια, επιλέξτε "Κλήση".
  • For a real person, use the pronouns that person prefers, εκείνος, εκείνη, εκείνοι or another. Gendered pronouns such as αυτός/εκείνος, αυτή/εκείνη, του, της are fine for real people who use them.
  • Use gender-neutral language in new products and content. Existing or legacy material need not be updated.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities. No words that imply pity, such as έχειπληγεί or υποφέρειαπό. Do not mention a disability unless relevant.
  • en use person with a disability, not handicapped; el use άτομο με αναπηρία, not ανάπηρος
  • en use person without a disability, not normal person; healthy person; el use άτομο χωρίς αναπηρία, not κανονικό άτομο, υγιές άτομο
  • Use generic verbs that fit all input methods and devices. In procedures, avoid verbs that make no sense with accessibility input methods.
  • en use Select, not Click; el use Επιλέξτε, not Κάντε κλικ
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Aim for one verb per sentence.
  • Read text aloud. Imagine a screen reader speaking it.
  • Spell out words like συν (or σύμβολοσυν) or περίπου. Screen readers can misread text with special characters like + or ~.

Abbreviations

  • A word can be abbreviated in three ways.
  • Omit characters from the middle of the word. Keep the first and last character and some middle characters, usually consonants: Δδα (δεσποινίδα), Κος (κύριος).
  • Omit the last part of the word. The abbreviation must end in a consonant: αρ. (αριθμός), δηλ. (δηλαδή).
  • Omit characters from the middle and replace them with a vertical: Δ/νση (Διεύθυνση), Θεσ/νίκη (Θεσσαλονίκη).
  • Common abbreviations: αιώνας -> αι.
  • αριθμός -> αρ.
  • βλέπε -> βλ.
  • γραμμάρια -> γραμ., γρ.
  • δηλαδή -> δηλ.
  • δεσποινίδα -> Δδα
  • διεύθυνση -> διεύθ., Δ/νση
  • διδάκτορας -> Δρ.
  • εκατοστό -> εκ.
  • εμβαδόν -> εμβ.
  • κύριος, κυρία -> κ.
  • και άλλα -> κ.ά.
  • Κελσίου (βαθμοί θερμοκρασίας) -> Κέλσ.
  • κύριοι ή κυρίες -> κ.κ.
  • Κύριος, Κυρία -> Κος, Κα
  • κεφάλαιο -> Κεφ.
  • και τα λοιπά -> κτλ., κ.λπ.
  • κυβικός -> κυβ.
  • μέτρα -> μ.
  • μίλια -> μιλ.
  • παράβαλε -> πρβλ.
  • σελίδα -> σελ.
  • σημείωση -> σημ.
  • τόμος -> τόμ.
  • τετραγωνικός -> τετρ.
  • τόνοι -> τόν.
  • υστερόγραφο -> ΥΓ.
  • χιλιάδες -> χιλ.
  • χιλιόμετρα -> χμ.
  • τετραγωνικά μέτρα -> τ.μ.
  • και ούτω καθεξής -> κ.ο.κ.
  • Avoid abbreviated words as a rule. Use a nonconventional abbreviation only when a word is too long for the available space, a common case in dialog boxes. The meaning must be completely clear and unambiguous.
  • Keep at least three characters.
  • Abbreviated forms have a period at the end, unless they stand at the end of the sentence.
  • Keep unlocalized abbreviations as they are when there is no Greek equivalent, or when the unlocalized form is prevalent in the Greek setting. Most concern measurement units.
  • en Megahertz -> MΗz
  • en Milliliter -> ml
  • en Kilobyte -> KB
  • en Megabyte -> ΜΒ
  • en Gigabyte -> GB
  • Abbreviations do not change form in the plural: 1 χμ. (1 χιλιόμετρο), 10 χμ. (10 χιλιόμετρα).
  • Omit the final period only in unlocalized abbreviations, and when the abbreviation stands before a sentence period or before an ellipsis. Otherwise keep the period if the abbreviation type requires one.

Acronyms

  • Write acronyms in uppercase. Do not conjugate them. Use no dashes or spaces, only periods.
  • For a localized acronym's gender, use the gender of its most important component word: Η Δ.Ε.Η. (Η Δημόσια Επιχείρηση Ηλεκτρισμού), H SQL (Η γλώσσα SQL).
  • Write out every acronym that is not widely known in full the first time it appears in each chapter.
  • Certain acronyms are established in spoken language as names. Keep that attribute: Λέιζερ.
  • Unlocalized acronyms keep their English form, with no periods between the characters.
  • On first appearance of an unlocalized acronym, put the English source words and their Greek translation next to it in parentheses: OLE (Object Linking and Embedding, Σύνδεση και Ενσωμάτωση Αντικειμένων).
  • When the English text spells the term out, translate the full text and place it next to the acronym in parentheses on first appearance.
  • en Color Management Module (CMM) -> el Λειτουργική μονάδα Διαχείρισης Χρωμάτων (Color Management Module, CMM)
  • When the acronym and its spelled-out form appear together in a section, put the acronym (usually kept in English) after the spelled-out form (usually translated), at every instance of the spelled-out term.
  • en If you enable authentication you may need to type a fully qualified domain name. -> el Εάν ενεργοποιήσετε τον έλεγχο ταυτότητας μπορεί να χρειαστεί να εισαγάγετε το πλήρως προσδιορισμένο όνομα τομέα (FQDN).
  • Some unlocalized acronyms are so common that their Greek translation is unnecessary: RAM (Random Access Memory), OLE (Object Linking & Embedding), DLL (Dynamic Link Library), CPU (Central Processing Unit).
  • Avoid gender with English acronyms by adding a descriptive word.
  • en Corrupted DLL -> el Το αρχείο DLL είναι κατεστραμμένο
  • en At least one IPX address used by this computer is not registered in the MQIS. -> el Τουλάχιστον μία διεύθυνση IPX που χρησιμοποιεί αυτός ο υπολογιστής δεν είναι καταχωρημένη στην υπηρεσία MQIS.
  • en Use HTTP 3.0 -> el Χρήση του πρωτοκόλλου HTTP 3.0
  • When gender is necessary, take it from the word that defines the acronym: Το UNIX (To λειτουργικό σύστημα UNIX), H CPU (Η μονάδα CPU), H HTML (Η γλώσσα HTML).
  • When a gender is already established for the acronym, use the prevailing form. Acronyms often take the neuter gender.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives agree with nouns in gender, case and number. Each adjective has a threefold declension paradigm for the three genders. They agree as attributes and as predicates.
  • Most adjectives take -ος in the masculine, -ο in the neuter, and -η, -α or -ια in the feminine.
  • Adjectives agree with the noun in its abstract gender, not in the shape of the endings.
  • The adjective's accent does not move in the genitive case.
  • use των διάφορων τύπων μηνυμάτων, not των διαφόρων τύπων μηνυμάτων
  • use του πρότυπου εγγράφου, not του προτύπου εγγράφου
  • Exception: the accent can move down in the genitive when the adjective is used as a noun.
  • use το επίπεδο των εκπαιδευομένων, not το επίπεδο των εκπαιδεύομενων
  • use το αναγνωριστικό του προτύπου, not το αναγνωριστικό του πρότυπου
  • Avoid possessive adjectives. Use the definite article instead of the possessive pronoun.
  • When the subject is a noun plus an adjective and a possessive adjective is necessary, do not split the adjective and the noun. Put the possessive after the noun.
  • use Για την ασφάλεια των προσωπικών δεδομένων σας, not Για την ασφάλεια των προσωπικών σας δεδομένων
  • use Για την ασφάλεια των σημαντικών πληροφοριών σας, not Για την ασφάλεια των σημαντικών σας πληροφοριών

Articles

  • Greek has a definite and an indefinite article. Both inflect for gender and case; the definite article also for number. The article agrees with the noun it modifies.
  • Always keep the final «ν» in the definite masculine article τον, the numerical and indefinite article έναν, the personal pronouns αυτόν and τον, and the particle σαν (ομοιωματικό).
  • The article την and the personal pronouns αυτήν and την drop the final ν when the next word starts with β, γ, δ, ζ, θ, λ, μ, ν, ρ, σ, φ, χ.
  • en You can't assign a group as a site owner or secondary contact. Try again, and specify an individual user account. -> el Δεν είναι δυνατό να ορίσετε μια ομάδα ως κάτοχο τοποθεσίας ή δευτερεύουσα επαφή. Προσπαθήστε ξανά και καθορίστε έναν μεμονωμένο λογαριασμό χρήστη.
  • en The mail folder couldn't be opened. If another application is using this folder, close it on the other application and try again. -> el Δεν ήταν δυνατό το άνοιγμα του φακέλου αλληλογραφίας. Εάν αυτός ο φάκελος χρησιμοποιείται από κάποια άλλη εφαρμογή, κλείστε τον στην άλλη εφαρμογή και προσπαθήστε ξανά.
  • en Let’s make today just as productive. Plan your day. -> el Ας κάνουμε τη σημερινή ημέρα εξίσου παραγωγική. Προγραμματίστε την ημέρα σας.
  • As a convention, always keep the final «ν» in δεν and μην, even where it would normally drop.
  • en If you aren't aware that your document contains linked objects or files, use caution when updating the document. -> el Εάν δεν γνωρίζετε ότι το έγγραφό σας περιέχει συνδεδεμένα αντικείμενα ή αρχεία, να είστε προσεκτικοί όταν ενημερώνετε το έγγραφο.
  • Use the definite article before product names and nontranslated feature names, although English uses none.
  • en Explore Microsoft 365 -> use Εξερευνήστε το Microsoft 365, not Εξερευνήστε Microsoft 365
  • en Microsoft Excel is a powerful program -> use Το Microsoft Excel είναι ένα ισχυρό πρόγραμμα, not Microsoft Excel είναι ένα ισχυρό πρόγραμμα
  • Most English product and feature names take the neuter article, with some exceptions.
  • For a localized feature name, use the article that matches the gender of the localized name.
  • en Open File Explorer -> use Ανοίξτε την Εξερεύνηση αρχείων, not Ανοίξτε το «Εξερεύνηση αρχείων»
  • For an English loanword used before, consider motivation (does the English word have features that allow straightforward integration into the Greek noun class system), analogy (is there an equivalent Greek term whose article could be used), and frequency (which article is used most often in other technical documentation).
  • Always confirm the article for a new loanword against the approved terminology.
  • en An external modem was found. -> use Βρέθηκε ένα εξωτερικό μόντεμ., not Βρέθηκε ένας εξωτερικός μόντεμ.

Capitalization

  • Nouns that denote residents of a country: initial capital in English yes, in Greek yes. Οι Έλληνες είναι Ευρωπαίοι
  • Adjectives that arise from country names: English yes, Greek no. Οι ελληνικές γραμματοσειρές είναι δύο τύπων.
  • Language names: English yes, Greek yes. Περιλαμβάνεται το εγχειρίδιο στα Αγγλικά.
  • Days and months: English yes, Greek yes. Το προϊόν θα κυκλοφορήσει την Τετάρτη 1η Φεβρουαρίου.
  • In all elements of menus and dialog boxes, such as buttons and options, capitalize only the first letter of the first word.
  • Menu command: en Page Layout... -> el Διάταξη σελίδας...
  • Button in a dialog box: en Details... -> el Λεπτομέρειες...
  • Option button in a dialog box: en Multiple random colors -> el Πολλά τυχαία χρώματα

  • Dialog box title: en Advanced Program Settings -> el Ρυθμίσεις προγράμματος για προχωρημένους
  • Menu element: en Display Settings -> el Ρυθμίσεις oθόνης
  • English UI strings often capitalize the first letter of each word. In Greek, limit this to terms considered application names or software elements.
  • Application name in a dialog box title: en Device Manager -> el Διαχείριση Συσκευών
  • Application name in a dialog box title (button): en Copy to Clipboard -> el Αντιγραφή στο Πρόχειρο

  • Examples from Help: Επιλέξτε την εντολή Δημιουργία από το μενού Αρχείο. Επιλέξτε τον οδηγό που θέλετε και κατόπιν το κουμπί "ΟΚ."
  • In headings, captions and image titles, capitalize only the first letter of the first word plus any term that requires capitalization.
  • use Πινέλο μορφοποίησης (icon caption), not Πινέλο Μορφοποίησης
  • In bulleted and numbered lists, start each item with a capital letter.
  • Example: Περισσότερες πληροφορίες μπορείτε να βρείτε στα ακόλουθα κεφάλαια: Στο κεφάλαιο 6 επεξηγείται αναλυτικά ο τρόπος δημιουργίας τυποποιημένων επιστολών. Στο κεφάλαιο 7 περιγράφεται ο τρόπος δημιουργίας ετικετών αλληλογραφίας.
  • Phrases in lists (chapters, sections, products, system requirements) that are neither sentences nor sentence fragments start with a capital letter.
  • Example: Άνοιγμα ενός αποθηκευμένου εγγράφου 57 Για να ανοίξετε ένα αποθηκευμένο έγγραφο 57 Για να ανοίξετε ένα έγγραφο που έχετε ανοίξει πολύ πρόσφατα 58 Για να ανοίξετε πολλά έγγραφα ταυτόχρονα 60
  • For programming language commands, use the same capitalization in Greek as in English. This applies to all nonlocalizable keywords and special terminology.
  • Examples: Η εντολή GetWindowsDirectory Η χρήση της συνάρτησης EXACT Στο πλαίσιο που εμφανίζεται πληκτρολογήστε d:\setup και κατόπιν πατήστε το πλήκτρο ENTER.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds.
  • Two nouns separated by a dash do not form a compound. Decline each noun separately: Λέξη-κλειδί, Εμφάνιση λέξης-κλειδιού, Επεξεργασία λέξεων-κλειδιών.

Conjunctions

  • Use conjunctions and adverbs to convey the informal, enthusiastic tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone.
  • en While your computer is being updated, you can keep working. -> old Ενώ γίνεται αναβάθμιση του υπολογιστή σας, εσείς μπορείτε να συνεχίσετε να εργάζεστε., new Μπορείτε να συνεχίσετε να εργάζεστε ενώ πραγματοποιείται αναβάθμιση του υπολογιστή σας.

Contractions

  • Use contractions, synaeresis and aphaeresis for a casual, friendly tone, but only in some key phrases. Extensive use sounds too informal or unprofessional.
  • en even if -> long ακόμα και εάν, contracted ακόμα κι αν
  • en The changes you have made are being saved. -> long Αποθηκεύονται οι αλλαγές που έχετε κάνει, contracted Αποθηκεύονται οι αλλαγές που ‘χετε κάνει

  • en It’s the parameter that goes into a command to run -> long Είναι η παράμετρος η οποία περνάει σε εντολή για εκτέλεση, contracted Είναι η παράμετρος που περνά σε εντολή για εκτέλεση

Gender

  • Greek has three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine, neuter.
  • For a foreign word, an acronym, an abbreviation, or an English adjective that covers masculine and feminine, convention or common usage sets the gender.
  • Unlocalized words take the neuter gender: το Internet, τα bit, τα pixel.
  • Apply the rules for unlocalized acronyms.
  • Server applications usually take the masculine gender.
  • Programming languages usually take the feminine gender.
  • Games generally take the neuter gender.
  • Names ending in -er such as Manager or Publisher usually take the masculine gender.
  • Encarta and Access take the feminine gender.
  • These guidelines are not strict or exhaustive. Exceptions occur from usage, context or marketing preferences.
  • Examples: To Microsoft Edge, Ο Exchange Server, Το Exchange, Το Outlook, Το Word, Το PowerPoint, Η Access, Το Office, Tα Windows, Ο Publisher, Ο Team Manager, Το Project, Το Dynamics 365.
  • For adjectives that can appear under both feminine and masculine, keep only the masculine form.
  • en Online (status indication) -> use Συνδεδεμένος, not Συνδεδεμένος(η)
  • en Available -> use Διαθέσιμος, not Διαθέσιμος(η)
  • en Busy -> use Απασχολημένος, not Απασχολημένος(η)

Genitive

  • The genitive can produce words that sound strange or wrong, for instance «οι λίστες – των λιστών».
  • Never use more than two adjacent genitive forms in one phrase. Replace the genitive with the nominative or causative case and appropriate alternative wording.
  • en The Setup program permits the installation of special chart fonts.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • First option: replace the source colloquialism with a Greek colloquialism that has the same meaning in that context.
  • Greek products also ship to Cyprus. A Greek colloquialism may not be appropriate for Cyprus.
  • With no appropriate equivalent, translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism.
  • Efforts to be funny or overly creative produce unprofessionally colloquial text.

Nouns

  • Nouns are widely used. Nouns often replace the verbs of the English source.
  • When the optional plural appears as (s), for example file(s), use only the plural form of the noun.
  • en Import component(s) that are already registered -> use Εισαγωγή στοιχείων που είναι ήδη καταχωρημένα, not Εισαγωγή στοιχείου(ων) που είναι ήδη καταχωρημένο(α)
  • en Microsoft warrants that a) the SOFTWARE will perform substantially in accordance with the accompanying Product Manual(s) for a period of 90 days from the date of receipt -> use Η Microsoft εγγυάται ότι (α) το ΛΟΓΙΣΜΙΚΟ θα λειτουργεί ουσιαστικά σύμφωνα με τα Εγχειρίδια Προϊόντος που το συνοδεύουν (ή το Εγχειρίδιο Προϊόντος που το συνοδεύει), για περίοδο ενενήντα (90) ημερών από την ημερομηνία παραλαβής, not Η Microsoft εγγυάται ότι (α) το ΛΟΓΙΣΜΙΚΟ θα λειτουργεί ουσιαστικά σύμφωνα με το(τα) Εγχειρίδιο(α) Προϊόντος που το συνοδεύει(ουν), για περίοδο ενενήντα (90) ημερών από την ημερομηνία παραλαβής
  • The Greek nominal system inflects for two numbers (singular, plural), three genders (masculine, feminine, neuter) and four cases (nominative, genitive, accusative, vocative). Use the normative references for inflection rules.
  • Plural formation rules differ for masculine, feminine and neuter nouns. Use the normative references.

Numbers

  • Write numbers below 10 as words, e.g. ένα, δύο, τρία.
  • Write numbers above 10 in digits. This is not strict; context decides.
  • Use digits for pages, chapters, figures and other sequentially numbered document elements: chapter 9; page 3; figure 1; table 4;
  • Use digits for numbers displayed as digits on screen: line 8; column 5;
  • Use digits for units of measurement and time, percentages, street numbers, distances and similar figures: 3,5 ίντσες; 360 kB; Από τις 16:00 έως τις 18:30; 12%; 127 χλμ.;
  • Following the style of the source text is usually fine.

Prepositions and adverbs

  • Use prepositions correctly. Do not omit them or change the word order under the influence of the English source.
  • Prepositions normally require the accusative case: από (from), για (for), με (with), μετά (after), χωρίς (without), ως (as), σε (to, in, at).
  • σε fuses with a following definite article into forms like στο (σε + το) and στη (σε + τη).
  • σε and από combine with preceding adverbs to form compound prepositions, e.g. πάνω σε (on), κάτω από (underneath), πλάι σε (beside).
  • en with respect to -> el αφορά. Avoid the structure «αφορά σε».
  • Always accent the interrogative words «πού» and «πώς». Drop the accent when the same words are relative pronouns.

  • Nouns in subordinate clauses introduced with «όπως» agree in case and number with the nouns they define. With a defining noun in the accusative, put the subordinate clause nouns in the accusative too.
  • Example: Η Microsoft προσφέρει διάφορα προγράμματα, όπως (προσφέρει) τα Windows, το Edge, το Outlook.
  • The nominative is possible only when the verb είναι is interjected after «όπως»: Η Microsoft προσφέρει διάφορα προγράμματα, όπως είναι τα Windows, το Edge, το Outlook.

Pronouns

  • Do not overuse pronouns. Repeating words in a sentence is sometimes better than using pronouns.
  • There are strong (stressed, free) and weak (unstressed, clitic) pronouns.
  • Nominative pronouns only have the strong form and serve as subjects only for special emphasis. The strong third-person forms also work as generic demonstratives ("this", "that").
  • en You fill in the title, author, date, and other information. -> el Εσείς θα συμπληρώσετε τον τίτλο, το συντάκτη, την ημερομηνία και άλλες πληροφορίες. (strong nominative second-person pronoun)

  • en There are host distribution rules that prevent us from suggesting change to your configuration -> el Υπάρχουν κανόνες διανομής κεντρικών διακομιστών που μας εμποδίζουν να προτείνουμε αλλαγές για τη ρύθμιση παραμέτρων σας (weak accusative first-person and genitive second-person)

  • en To import from this file, first convert the file by canceling out of the wizard, and then open the file and save it to a supported format. -> el Για να κάνετε εισαγωγή από αυτό το αρχείο, μετατρέψτε το πρώτα, καταργώντας το από τον οδηγό και μετά ανοίξτε το αρχείο και αποθηκεύστε το σε μορφή που υποστηρίζεται. Punctuation

  • Follow the typographic conventions for punctuation. The comma is often misused and hinders readability.
  • Avoid the apostrophe in software and documentation. The vowel modifications usually marked by an apostrophe, especially «αφαίρεση» and «αποκοπή», are not necessary in written texts, aside from special cases.

  • In the first case, the word after the colon is lowercase.
  • en Monochrome printer: No Color Management -> el Μονόχρωμος εκτυπωτής: δεν εφαρμόζεται η Διαχείριση Χρωμάτων
  • en Basic management: Determines how colors will appear in your screen and in your printer. -> el Βασική διαχείριση: καθορισμός της εμφάνισης των χρωμάτων στην οθόνη και τον εκτυπωτή σας.
  • Exception: capitalize after the colon to emphasize the following sentence, common with Caution, Note or Warning.
  • en Caution: Setup will delete any files in this disk. -> el Προσοχή: Η Εγκατάσταση θα διαγράψει τυχόν υπάρχοντα αρχεία σε αυτόν τον δίσκο.
  • en Note: Some devices in your computer may not appear in this list. Setup will locate and configure these devices at a later stage. -> el Σημείωση: Ορισμένες συσκευές του υπολογιστή σας ίσως δεν παρουσιάζονται σε αυτήν τη λίστα. Η Εγκατάσταση θα βρει και θα ρυθμίσει αυτές τις συσκευές αργότερα.
  • en WARNING: Any files on this disk will be permanently deleted. -> el ΠΡΟΕΙΔΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ: Όσα αρχεία υπάρχουν στον δίσκο θα διαγραφούν οριστικά.
  • In the second case, the capitalization rules for lists apply.
  • en To use Microsoft Office 2019 you must have * A computer with 1.6 GHz or faster processor, 2-core * At least 64 GB RAM -> el Για να χρησιμοποιήσετε το Office Professional 2019 πρέπει να έχετε * Έναν υπολογιστή με επεξεργαστή 1.6 GHz ή ταχύτερο, 2-πύρηνο * 4 GΒ RAM
  • The colon is also a list separator in software elements: Η περιοχή κελιών C1:D9

Dashes and hyphens

  • Use the hyphen to divide words between syllables, to indicate a range between two figures, to link parts of a compound word, and to connect the parts of some colloquial expressions. No space between words and the hyphen. Use the discretionary hyphen Ctrl+Shift+Hyphen so compound words do not separate.
  • Examples: Key-word, σιγά-σιγά, άτομα ηλικίας 25-45 ετών
  • Use the en dash as a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. It is usually half the width of an em dash. Type it with Alt+0150 or “Ctrl”+“-” (hyphen on the numerical keyboard).
  • Examples: 15 – 6 = 9, – 3 °C
  • Use the en dash in number ranges such as page numbers, with no spaces: 2–3 weeks
  • Type the em dash with Alt+0151. In Greek, replace it most of the time with a period, comma or parentheses. Use it only to set off an isolated element or to introduce an item that is not essential or relevant to the meaning of the sentence.
  • Example: Εάν προχωρήσετε σε αναδιοργάνωση —θα δείτε στα επόμενα κεφάλαια πόσο εύκολο είναι— μετακινώντας τις επικεφαλίδες μπορείτε να αναδιατάξετε συνολικά το έγγραφό σας.
  • Put an empty space before the first em dash and after the second, and no spaces between the dashes and the parenthetic clause. The dashes work like brackets.

Ellipsis

  • Insert the ellipsis with Alt+Ctrl+., never three consecutive periods.
  • Use it to show the omission of words or phrases, an interruption in speech, and to emphasize the text that follows.
  • en Dialing… -> el Κλήση…
  • en Closing… -> el Κλείσιμο…

Exclamation point

  • Use the exclamation point sparingly. Replace an English exclamation point with a period in Greek.
  • en Out of memory! -> el Η μνήμη δεν επαρκεί.
  • Exception: product packaging, marketing text, and text with a special warning for the user may use it where necessary.

Nonbreaking space

  • The nonbreaking space is Ctrl+Shift+Space. Use it to connect words that should not appear on different lines.
  • Use it between «Κεφάλαιο», «Παράρτημα», «Σχήμα» and the accompanying number, e.g. Κεφάλαιο5ο.
  • Use it between the numerical value of a quantity and its unit of measurement, e.g. 25 εκ.

Period

  • Phrases in a bulleted or numbered list that form complete sentences take a period at the end.
  • Example: Περισσότερες πληροφορίες μπορείτε να βρείτε στα ακόλουθα κεφάλαια: Στο κεφάλαιο 6 επεξηγείται αναλυτικά ο τρόπος δημιουργίας τυποποιημένων επιστολών. Στο κεφάλαιο 7 περιγράφεται ο τρόπος δημιουργίας ετικετών αλληλογραφίας.
  • Phrases in a list that complete the introductory sentence or are not complete sentences take no period.
  • Example: Έχετε τη δυνατότητα να διαλέξετε μια από τις εξής επιλογές: Στοίχιση στο δεξιό περιθώριο Στοίχιση στο αριστερό περιθώριο Πλήρη στοίχιση
  • Phrases in lists (chapters, sections, products, system requirements) that neither form nor complete a sentence take no period.
  • Example: Άνοιγμα ενός αποθηκευμένου εγγράφου 57 Για να ανοίξετε ένα αποθηκευμένο έγγραφο 57 Για να ανοίξετε ένα έγγραφο που έχετε ανοίξει πολύ πρόσφατα 58 Για να ανοίξετε πολλά έγγραφα ταυτόχρονα 60
  • When quoted text stands at the end of a sentence, put the period inside the quotation marks. Otherwise put it outside. The English source may use a different convention.
  • en In this case, a message may appear "Not enough space on the disk." -> el Στην περίπτωση αυτή μπορεί να εμφανιστεί το μήνυμα «Δεν υπάρχει αρκετός χώρος στον δίσκο.»
  • en Click the OK button. -> el Επιλέξτε το κουμπί «ΟΚ.»
  • Use no period in complete sentences inside quotation marks when the quoted text sits in the middle of a larger sentence.
  • en If the message "Not enough space on the disk" appears, delete some redundant files. -> el Εάν εμφανιστεί το μήνυμα «Δεν υπάρχει αρκετός χώρος στον δίσκο», διαγράψτε μερικά άχρηστα αρχεία
  • When parentheses add an independent sentence, put the period inside the parentheses.
  • en It is possible that there is not enough space on your disk. (A relevant warning may appear.) -> el Είναι πιθανόν να μην έχετε αρκετό χώρο στον δίσκο. (Μπορεί να εμφανιστεί και το σχετικό προειδοποιητικό μήνυμα.)
  • When the parenthetical text ends a sentence, put the period outside the parentheses.
  • en It is possible that there is not enough space on your disk (although in that case a relevant warning should appear). -> el Είναι πιθανό να μην έχετε αρκετό χώρο στον δίσκο (αν και θα έπρεπε στην περίπτωση αυτή να εμφανιστεί το σχετικό προειδοποιητικό μήνυμα).
  • Use no period with a complete or incomplete sentence inside parentheses in the middle of a larger sentence.
  • en If there is not enough space on your disk (a relevant warning will appear), delete some redundant files. -> el Εάν δεν έχετε αρκετό χώρο στον δίσκο (θα εμφανιστεί το σχετικό προειδοποιητικό μήνυμα), διαγράψτε μερικά άχρηστα αρχεία.
  • Headings and titles never take a period.
  • Captions take a period, unless the caption is a short descriptive phrase, for example the caption of a tool.
  • Explanations that are not complete sentences take no period. Complete sentences do.

Question mark

  • Replace the Latin question mark with the Greek question mark. The Greek question mark also serves as a list separator of software elements.
  • en Are you sure you want to delete this file? -> el Είστε βέβαιοι πως θέλετε να διαγράψετε αυτό το αρχείο;

Quotation marks

  • Greek usually applies chevrons « », and Latin quotation marks “ ” are used too. For consistency, use straight double quotation marks " ".
  • Use single quotation marks for quoted text inside another quotation, and in files where double quotation marks are impossible, for example .inf files.
  • Use quotation marks when referring to menu and dialog box elements such as buttons, titles and options.
  • en Click Change Address to enter your email address -> el Κάντε κλικ στο κουμπί "Αλλαγή διεύθυνσης", για να πληκτρολογήσετε την ηλεκτρονική σας διεύθυνση
  • en Click Update All on the File menu to bring your files up-to-date. -> el Κάντε κλικ στην επιλογή "Ενημέρωση όλων" του μενού "Αρχείο" για να ενημερώσετε τα αρχεία σας.
  • Use quotation marks when referring to a wizard.
  • en Don't run the Hardware Installation Wizard -> el Να μην εκτελεστεί ο «Οδηγός εγκατάστασης υλικού»
  • en Welcome to the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard -> el Καλώς ορίσατε στον «Οδηγό για κάρτες PC (PCMCIA).»
  • Use no quotation marks when the wizard name appears in a title rather than a phrase, or when the full name is not mentioned and the term is descriptive.
  • en Registration Wizard (dialog title) -> el Οδηγός δήλωσης προϊόντος
  • en Welcome to the %s Registration wizard. -> el Καλώς ορίσατε στον «Οδηγό δήλωσης του %s.», a reference to the wizard's full name; the word «οδηγός» changes case accordingly
  • en This wizard helps you register your copy of %s: -> el Αυτός ο οδηγός σάς δίνει τη δυνατότητα να δηλώσετε το αντίγραφο των %s:, the term "wizard" alone
  • en Use the Identity Migration Wizard to perform this task. Start the Migration Wizard now. -> el Χρησιμοποιήστε τον «Οδηγό μετεγκατάστασης ταυτότητας» για να εκτελέσετε αυτήν την ενέργεια. Εκκινήστε τώρα τον Oδηγό μετεγκατάστασης. The full name goes in quotation marks; the descriptive second use does not.

Parentheses

  • No space between the parentheses and the text inside them.
  • Use parentheses in matched pairs to set apart or interject other text.
  • When the content of the parentheses links to the sentence, start it with a lowercase letter and use no period at the end.
  • When the content relates to the whole paragraph, start it with a capital letter and end it with a period inside the parentheses.
  • en Welcome to the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard -> el Καλώς ορίσατε στον «Οδηγό για κάρτες PC (PCMCIA)».

Semicolon

  • The Greek semicolon is a raised period ·. Insert it with Alt+0183.
  • Use it to introduce a dependent clause or to emphasize a paratactic structure or an apposition: Δεν χρειάζεται να επιλέξετε τα γειτονικά κελιά το Excel τα επιλέγει μόνο του.
  • The Greek semicolon is not used in software. In documentation it is rare, but allowed when necessary.

Space

  • No space between a punctuation symbol and the preceding character. A space follows the punctuation symbol.

Sentence fragments

  • Use specific sentence fragments to represent similar source phrases consistently and keep sentences brief.
  • en Do the following: -> long Χρησιμοποιήστε τα βήματα που ακολουθούν:, fragment Κάντε τα εξής:
  • en For more information, visit <link>. -> long Για περισσότερες πληροφορίες, επισκεφθείτε τη διεύθυνση <link>., fragment Για περισσότερες πληροφορίες, δείτε το/τη/τα/τις <link>.

  • en Do not show again. -> long Να μην εμφανιστεί αυτό το παράθυρο ξανά., fragment Να μην εμφανιστεί ξανά.

Subjunctive

  • The subjunctive mood indicates probability or objective possibility. It is often used in conditional statements or purpose clauses.
  • Hortatory subjunctive, exhorting someone to action: Να φύγεις!
  • Prohibitive subjunctive, the action is prohibited: Να μην πας
  • Deliberative subjunctive, the same as the rhetorical question in English: Να ήταν αυτός ο λόγος

Verbs

  • Greek verb morphology contrasts two aspects, imperfective and perfective, and two tenses, past and nonpast (present).
  • Two separate verb stems express the aspects; different sets of endings mark the tenses.
  • Only three of the four combinations work in the indicative: the present (imperfective nonpast), the imperfect (imperfective past) and the aorist (perfective past). All four work in the subjunctive, typically preceded by «να» or a subordinating conjunction. There are two imperatives, one per aspect.
  • English expresses continuous operations with a gerund. Translate it with a present participle, a noun or a verb.
  • en A dialog box will appear, asking where to save the file. -> el Θα εμφανιστεί ένα παράθυρο διαλόγου, το οποίο θα σας ρωτά πού πρέπει να αποθηκευτεί το αρχείο.
  • Choose the correct verb type for the context.
  • Continuous tenses imply an ongoing or habitual action: Εγκαταστήστε αυτό το λογισμικό σε υπολογιστές με Windowsγια να επιτρέπετε στους διαχειριστές να αλλάζουν τις εγγραφές του μητρώου σε υπολογιστές μέσω του δικτύου.
  • Noncontinuous tenses imply an action that occurs once or is not habitual: Εγκαταστήστε αυτό το λογισμικό σε υπολογιστές με Windowsγια να επιτρέψετε στους διαχειριστές να αλλάξουν τις εγγραφές του μητρώου σε υπολογιστές μέσω του δικτύου.
  • Watch the spelling of «εξάγω», «εισάγω» and «προβάλλω».
  • For an action performed once, use εισαγάγετε, εξαγάγετε, προβάλετε.
  • For a repetitive action or one performed every time, use εισάγετε, εξάγετε, προβάλλετε.
  • Transitory form -> continuous form: εξαγάγω -> εξάγω
  • προβάλω -> προβάλλω
  • εισαγάγω -> εισάγω
  • Imperative phrases usually take the transitory form (simple past imperative).
  • en Import the log into the Microsoft Office Excel template -> el Εισαγάγετε το αρχείο καταγραφής στο πρότυπο του Microsoft Office Excel.
  • Try other verbs in the phrase to see which form to choose.
  • en Insert a title for your home page. -> el Εισαγάγετε έναν τίτλο για την κεντρική σας σελίδα (Πληκτρολογήστε έναν τίτλο για την κεντρική σας σελίδα) (Καταχωρήστε έναν τίτλο για την κεντρική σας σελίδα)
  • When you cannot determine the appropriate verb form, use a workaround such as an equivalent descriptive phrase or noun.
  • en You are exporting a .pst file from Microsoft Office Outlook. -> el Γίνεται εξαγωγή ενός αρχείου .pst από το Microsoft Office Outlook.
  • In status bar messages and third-person tooltips, use the continuous form.
  • en Finds and displays information on websites on the internet. -> el Βρίσκει και προβάλλει πληροφορίες για τοποθεσίες web στο Internet.

Localization considerations

  • Give the text the look and feel of a product originally written in Greek, with idiomatic syntax and terminology and high terminological consistency.

Accessibility

  • Some accessible products and services are not available in Greek-speaking markets. Double-check with the appropriate resources.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are often trademarked and rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too, for example IntelliSense.
  • Errors in translating product names and software elements are a high priority. When in doubt, refer to approved terminology.
  • en Open Microsoft Excel -> el Άνοιγμα του Microsoft Excel
  • en Start Microsoft Access -> el Έναρξη της Microsoft Access
  • Program names contained in Windows and Office are usually translated, unless trademarked.
  • en File Explorer -> el Εξερεύνηση αρχείων
  • en About Notepad -> el Πληροφορίες για το Σημειωματάριο
  • en Calendar -> el Ημερολόγιο
  • en Microsoft Defender -> el Microsoft Defender
  • en BitLocker Drive Encryption -> el Κρυπτογράφηση μονάδων δίσκου BitLocker
  • Version names usually remain unlocalized, except the Home and Student and Home and Business editions, translated as «Έκδοση για οικιακή χρήση και μαθητές» and «Έκδοση για οικιακή χρήση και μικρές επιχειρήσεις».
  • en Office OneNote 2021 -> el Office OneNote 2021
  • en Office 365 ProPlus -> el Office 365 ProPlus
  • en Microsoft Home & Business 2021 -> el Microsoft 2021 Έκδοση για οικιακή χρήση και μικρές επιχειρήσεις

  • en Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. -> el Ο διακομιστής του Microsoft Exchange δεν είναι διαθέσιμος.
  • en Microsoft Exchange Server offline address book: -> el Βιβλίο διευθύνσεων χωρίς σύνδεση του Microsoft Exchange Server:
  • Apply the rules for unlocalized acronyms.
  • Server applications usually take the masculine gender.
  • Programming languages usually take the feminine gender.
  • Games generally take the neuter gender.
  • Names ending in -er such as Manager or Publisher usually take the masculine gender.
  • Access takes the feminine gender.
  • Exceptions occur from usage, context or marketing preferences.
  • Examples: Το Edge, Ο Exchange Server, Το Exchange, Το Outlook, Το Word, Το PowerPoint, Η Access, Το Office, Tα Windows, Ο Publisher, Ο Team Manager, H Visual C++, Το Project, Το Minecraft.
  • Localize the names of product features and product elements. Keep an accompanying acronym in English and localize its spelled-out form.
  • en Information Access Service (IAS) -> el Υπηρεσία πρόσβασης πληροφοριών (IAS)
  • en Quarantine Enforcement Server (QES) -> el Διακομιστής επιβολής καραντίνας (QES)
  • en System Health Agent (SHA) -> el Παράγοντας εύρυθμης λειτουργίας συστήματος (SHA)
  • Version numbers always contain a period, for example Version 4.2.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information.

Software considerations

  • Clarity and simplicity are the key considerations.
  • Be as short as possible. Avoid unnecessary words.
  • Different devices, sizes and formats are used. UI must fit all of them.
  • Achieve cross-platform consistency across desktop, mobile and cloud.
  • Every principle below may have an exception based on the product, the experience and the customer.

Arrow key names

  • en Up arrow -> el Επάνω βέλος
  • en Down arrow -> el Κάτω βέλος
  • en Left arrow -> el Αριστερό βέλος
  • en Right arrow -> el Δεξιό βέλος

Error messages

  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate the US English forms.
  • Never use exclamation points after error messages in Greek.
  • en An Error Has Occurred! -> use Παρουσιάστηκε σφάλμα., not Παρουσιάστηκε σφάλμα!
  • Never render the word please in Greek.
  • en Please enter a currency. -> use Πληκτρολογήστε μια νομισματική μονάδα., not Παρακαλώ πληκτρολογήστε μια νομισματική μονάδα.
  • Standardize standard phrases. The US English source sometimes uses various phrases for the same thing.
  • en Cannot … -> el Δεν είναι δυνατός/-ή/-το (verb in present tense), e.g. Δεν είναι δυνατή η μεταγλώττιση του έργου.
  • en Could not … -> el Δεν ήταν δυνατός/-ή/-το (verb in past tense), e.g. Δεν ήταν δυνατό το άνοιγμα του αρχείου της ομάδας εργασίας.
  • en Failed to …, Failure of … -> el … απέτυχε., Αποτυχία …, e.g. Η σωστή μετακίνηση του αρχείου [2] απέτυχε, Αποτυχία κάρτας SIM. The term «απέτυχε» can stand at the beginning or the end of the sentence.
  • en Cannot find … -> el Δεν είναι δυνατή η εύρεση … (present), e.g. Δεν είναι δυνατή η εύρεση αρχείου

  • en ... is unavailable -> el … δεν είναι διαθέσιμος, e.g. Ο προορισμός αυτής της σύνδεσης δεν είναι διαθέσιμος
  • Embedding or concatenating strings of different inflection or gender inside messages causes problems. With placeholders, find out what replaces the placeholder so the sentence stays grammatical.
  • Placeholder letters carry meaning: %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>.
  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."
  • "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."
  • The syntax must accept the nominative form of the placeholder. Word order is usually reversed. Use gender-neutral expressions as much as possible, or precede the placeholder with a descriptive term to avoid gender issues.
  • en (!idspnOutlook_NV) cannot verify that %1 sent this message. -> el Το (!idspnOutlook_NV) δεν είναι δυνατό να επαληθεύσει ότι το %1 απέστειλε αυτό το μήνυμα.
  • en %1%2 message. -> el Μήνυμα %1%2.
  • en Change the password for %s -> el Αλλάξτε τον κωδικό πρόσβασης για το %s.

Keys

  • Key names, like arrow keys, function keys and numeric keys, appear in normal text with sentence-style capitalization, not small caps.
  • Do not localize key names, except Space (πλήκτρο διαστήματος), Up arrow (επάνω βέλος), Down arrow (κάτω βέλος), Left arrow (αριστερό βέλος), Right arrow (δεξιό βέλος).
  • Capitalize only the first character of a localized key name.

  • Examples: en New -> el Δημιουργία; en Cancel -> el Άκυρο; en Options -> el Επιλογές
  • Slim characters such as I, l, t, r, f can be used: yes. The Greek character ι can be used, but only when no other full-width characters are available.
  • Characters with downstrokes such as g, j, y, p, q can be used: yes. Greek has several (β, γ, ζ, η, μ, ξ, ρ, φ, χ, ψ); use them only when no characters without downstrokes exist.
  • Extended characters can be used: yes. All Greek characters are extended characters. Accented characters (ά έ ή ί ό ύ ώ ϊ ϋ ΐ ΰ) cannot be used, for example Πίσω. Characters that need two key strokes (; + ι) must not be used.
  • An additional letter in brackets after the item name can be used: yes, only in exceptional cases.
  • A number in brackets after the item name can be used: yes, only in exceptional cases.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name can be used: yes, only in exceptional cases.
  • Duplicate keyboard shortcuts when no other character is available: yes.
  • No keyboard shortcut assigned when no more characters are available (minor options only): no.
  • access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to reach UI controls that have text labels. Assigned to top-level controls so the user can move through the UI quickly. Example: F in Alt+F. In UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
  • key tip: the letter or number that appears in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization the key tip is the last character after the backtick character. Example: Home`H
  • shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to perform a common action without going through the UI. Not available for every command. Examples: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys are used with the Ctrl key. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys F1 through F12 are the best choices.
  • Select keyboard shortcuts in this order of priority.
