Arabic (Saudi Arabia) style guide

Voice and register

  • Clear, friendly, concise. Everyday conversation, not formal or technical register.
  • Match source intent, not source words. Non-standard translations OK.
  • Never translate literally if the result is irrelevant to the customer.
  • Technical terms for technical audiences, common words for consumers.

Flexibility

  • Modify or rewrite strings so they read naturally to Arabic customers.
  • Understand the intent of whole sentences, paragraphs, and pages, then rewrite as if authoring.
  • Remove unnecessary content where needed.
  • Users can change when new updates get installed. -> يمكن للمستخدمين تغيير موعد تثبيت التحديثات الجديدة.

Words and phrases to avoid

  • Avoid an unnecessarily formal tone.
  • Also: كذلك -> أيضا
  • Next: اللاحق -> التالي
  • You can: يتسنى لك -> يمكنك

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology from the language resources for key terms, technical terms, product names. Report an approved term that clashes with the voice to your project manager.
  • Prefer short, simple, everyday words.
  • Do: افعل. Use the imperative form rather than قم with the infinitive wherever possible: افتح التطبيق, not قم بفتح التطبيق.
  • Your: كاف الخطاب. Do not translate Your as الخاص بك. Translate it in the first occurrence only, preferably as كاف الخطاب, or skip it, unless it is needed to distinguish one thing of several as yours.
  • My: ياء المتكلم. Mark first-person singular possession with ياء المتكلم, not الخاص بي: ملفاتي, not الملفات الخاصة بي.

Word-to-word translation

  • Avoid word-to-word translation. It makes the tone stiff and unnatural.
  • Split text into separate sentences where needed, and simplify.
  • Omit descriptors to make text snappier.
  • You must be delivery focused and genuinely enjoy interacting and interviewing a high volume of candidates on a daily basis. -> correct المؤهلات الوظيفية: القدرة على تحقيق نتائج ملموسة، وقوة المهارات الاجتماعية في التفاعل مع عدد كبير من المرشحين يوميا وإجراء مقابلات معهم.; incorrect يجب أن يكون تركيزك على النتائج وأن تستمتع بإجراء مقابلات مع عدد كبير من المرشحين والتفاعل معهم يوميا.
  • Explore help and how-to for Windows -> correct استكشاف التعليمات والمقالات الإرشادية لنظام Windows; incorrect استكشاف التعليمات والكيفية لنظام Windows

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Plain language. Prefer two syllables to three, clear words to one complicated term.
  • No politically disputed cities, countries, regions in examples.
  • Use equivalent references in one example. No mixing countries with states or continents.
  • Show diverse people, professions, educational settings, locales, economic settings.
  • No stereotyping by region, culture, age, gender, not even positively. For job roles use names of varied gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • No profane or derogatory terms. No slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • No terms with racial bias, or tied to military actions, politics, controversial history.
  • master/slave -> primary/subordinate; سيد/عبد/تابع -> رئيس/مرؤوس
  • demilitarized zone (DMZ) -> perimeter network; منطقة منزوعة السلاح -> شبكة فرعية مراقبة
  • guru -> expert; زعيم -> خبير
  • guys; ladies and gentlemen -> colleagues; everyone; all; جماعة؛ شباب -> الزملاء؛ الكل؛ الجميع
  • mother or father -> parent; الأم أو الأب -> أحد الوالدين

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives. Avoid compounds with gender-specific terms.
  • المصنع (maker) -> الشركة المصنعة, الجهة المصنعة (manufacturer). A generic word avoids the masculine form.
  • المشاركون / المشاركات (participants) -> الحضور (audience). A collective noun avoids masculine and feminine forms.
  • موظفون / موظفات (employees) -> فريق عمل (operates, staffs). A collective noun avoids masculine and feminine forms.
  • مندوب مبيعات (salesman) -> فريق المبيعات (sales representative, part of sales team). A plural form avoids the masculine form.
  • العاملون / العاملات (workers) -> القوى العاملة, طاقم العمل (workforce, staff, personnel). A collective noun avoids masculine and feminine forms.
  • دار رعاية المسنين (Home for aged men) -> دار رعاية كبار السن (Home for aged people). Use an umbrella word covering both genders instead of one reflecting males only.
  • For generalizations use plural noun forms: الأشخاص, الأفراد, الطلاب.
  • Use words indicating both genders for positions: معلم -> معلم ومعلمة (teacher).
  • Use the gerund form in generic references.
  • Rewrite the sentence with a plural noun and pronoun.
  • Use يجب/يمكنك/يرجى as applicable, since each is followed by a gerund rather than the imperative.
  • In instructions avoid the imperative. Use a gerund preceded by the Arabic equivalent of "following the below steps".
  • If the user has the appropriate rights, he can set other users' passwords. -> With the appropriate rights, one can set other users' passwords.; إذا كان المستخدم يملك الحقوق المناسبة، فيمكنه تعيين كلمات المرور للمستخدمين الآخرين. -> عند امتلاك الحقوق المناسبة، يمكن تعيين كلمات مرور المستخدمين الآخرين.
  • A developer needs access to servers in his development environment, but he doesn't need access to the servers in Azure. -> Developers need access to servers in their development environments, but they don't need access to the servers in Azure.; يحتاج المطور إلى الوصول إلى الخوادم في بيئة التطوير الخاصة به، لكنه لا يحتاج إلى الوصول إلى الخوادم في Azure. -> يحتاج المطورون إلى الوصول إلى الخوادم في بيئات التطوير، لكنهم لا يحتاجون إلى الوصول إلى الخوادم في Azure.
  • To create a new document, you need to: - Select File - Select New - Choose Blank Document -> لإنشاء مستند جديد، يمكنك اتباع الخطوات التالية: - تحديد ملف - تحديد جديد - اختيار مستند فارغ; not لإنشاء مستند جديد: ... - حدد ملفا - حدد جديدا - اختر مستندا فارغا
  • To call someone, select his name, select Make a phone call, and then select his number. -> To call someone, please select the person's name, select Make a phone call, and then choose the number you'd like to dial.; للاتصال بشخص، حدد اسمه ثم حدد إجراء مكالمة هاتفية وحدد رقمه. -> للاتصال بأحد الأشخاص، يرجى تحديد اسم هذا الشخص ثم تحديد إجراء مكالمة هاتفية واختيار الرقم المطلوب الاتصال به.
  • Use verbal nouns in tooltips. Arabic has no equivalent of it, so an icon is feminine and a button masculine; a verbal noun avoids choosing between تعرض and يعرض.
  • Displays full pages as they will be printed -> عرض الصفحات بأكملها أثناء طباعتها
  • Use gender-neutral language in new products and content. Legacy material need not change.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities. No pity words: no مصاب بـ, no يعاني. Mention a disability only when relevant.
  • handicapped -> person with a disability; معاق؛ شخص يعاني إعاقة؛ شخص ذو عاهة؛ أعوه؛ متخلف -> شخص ذو احتياجات خاصة
  • normal person; healthy person -> person without a disability; شخص بصحة جيدة؛ شخص طبيعي؛ شخص سوي؛ شخص عادي -> شخص بدون احتياجات خاصة
  • Use generic verbs that fit all input methods and devices.
  • Click -> Select; انقر فوق -> حدد
  • Short paragraphs, simple sentences. Read text aloud, imagine a screen reader.
  • Spell out words like بالإضافة إلى/إضافة إلى and حوالي/تقريبا. Avoid &, +, ~.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviation does not really apply to Arabic. Abbreviate in the UI (mainly buttons or option names) only to save space.
  • معلومات: م.
  • خيارات: خ.
  • تسجيل الدخول: ت. د.
  • إعادة المحاولة: إ. م.
  • Common unit abbreviations are usable: km -> كم; cm -> سم; gm -> جم

Acronyms

  • Examples: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • Translate an acronym as the full form it stands for: RAM -> ذاكرة الوصول العشوائي.
  • Where space is short, leave the acronym in English.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives follow nouns, unlike English.
  • Long name -> اسم طويل

Articles

  • Arabic has no indefinite article. Use a stand-alone word (ملف) for an English indefinite article, and ال (الملف) or a genitive construction (ملف الكمبيوتر) for an English definite article.
  • Use unlocalized product and feature names without a definite or indefinite article.
  • Highlight localized feature names with double or single quotes, especially inside other text.
  • Configure Virtualization Settings. -> يجب تكوين إعدادات "الظاهرية".
  • For an English loan word check motivation (formal features allowing integration), analogy (equivalent Arabic term whose article can be used), frequency (article most used in other technical documentation).
  • Confirm a new loan word and its article in the terminology resource.

Capitalization

  • Arabic has no capitalization. Put English capitalized words in quotes to highlight them.
  • To update your computer, click Update. -> لتحديث الكمبيوتر، انقر فوق "تحديث."; incorrect لتحديث الكمبيوتر، انقر فوق تحديث.

Conjunctions

  • Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone.
  • Prefer conjunctions such as و, ثم, كما أن, حيث إن, مع أن, من ثم, used correctly to build one long sentence from short ones.
  • You've the administrator privileges. However, you can't change the file type.: classic تتمتع بامتيازات المسؤول. ومع ذلك، لا يمكنك تغيير نوع الملف. -> modern مع أنك تتمتع بامتيازات المسؤول، إلا أنه لا يمكنك تغيير نوع الملف.

Diacritics

  • No vowelization in documentation or online assistance files, except where a verb or noun would be ambiguous or confusing without a vowel, as in قبل و قبل.
  • Tanween (ً) goes at the end of a word, on the alef, not before it: قلماً

Genitive

  • With an English word between the governed and governing word, place the English after the Arabic: جداول Excel البيانية -> الجداول البيانية لبرنامج Excel
  • Class genitive constructs (الإضافة إلى الفئات): English uses a prepositioned singular class word, Arabic a postpositioned plural. Field Area -> ناحية الحقول, not ناحية الحقل.
  • Use the singular where the genitive complement (المضاف إليه) is a function word: Break area -> ناحية الفصل; Add Print Wizard -> معالج إضافة طابعة.
  • Genitive conjunctive constructs (العطف على المضاف إليه): the genitive complement links only to its antecedent, whatever the conjunctions. An English complement needs two Arabic ones, the second a pronoun: Creating and Sending Reports -> إنشاء التقارير وإرسالها, not إنشاء وإرسال التقارير.

Hamza

  • The concern is writing the Hamza on the Alef at the start of a word or verb:

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Arabic usually translates the intended meaning of the source colloquialism.
  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with an Arabic one unless it is a perfect and natural fit.
  • Where the English colloquialism has no fluent natural counterpart, translate the intended meaning, not the words.
  • All ready to go -> اكتمل الإعداد وأصبح النظام جاهزا للاستخدام

Nouns

  • English plural covers both the Arabic plural (جمع) and the Arabic dual (مثنى). Contextualize each English plural.
  • Spin Arrows -> سهمان, not أسهم

Numbers

  • 0, 1, and 2 are not written in digits.
  • Remove 0: 0 students -> لا يوجد طلاب
  • Spell out 1: 1 student -> طالب واحد
  • Put 2 in the dual form: 2 students -> طالبان
  • Write all other numbers in digits, same as the English source.
  • Always use the Western Arabic numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Pronouns

  • Do not overuse possessive pronouns. The definite article sounds more natural, especially where the possessor is obvious.
  • Double-click the Skype Name in your Contact List or the search result -> انقر نقرا مزدوجا على اسم Skype في قائمة جهات الاتصال أو نتيجة البحث

Punctuation

  • Punctuation follows the English rules, with the details below.
  • Comma: no space before, space after. Type the Arabic comma with Shift + ن.
  • لإجراء محاولة أخرى، انقر فوق "إعادة المحاولة".

  • المستند جاهز الآن للطباعة. انقر فوق "طباعة".

  • The File Menu -> القائمة "ملف"
  • Use a mirrored question mark.
  • هل تريد إعادة المحاولة؟
  • Parentheses: opening takes a space before and none after; closing takes none before and a space after.

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • Use a non-breaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) between words that must not split across lines.
  • Between Part, Chapter, or Appendix and its number or letter.
  • Between a unit of measurement or currency and its number.
  • Between any items that must not divide, such as Windows 10 Enterprise and Word 2019.
  • Percentage: no space between the number and %. Put % on the left of the number.
  • 50% -> 50%, not % 50

Verbs

  • Use simple tenses; prefer simple present. Avoid future tense unless the event really is future. Simple past for events already done.
  • Once completing the registration form, you will need to enter your password.: classic وفور الانتهاء من ملء استمارة التسجيل، سوف يتعين عليك إدخال كلمة المرور. -> modern ويتعين عليك إدخال كلمة المرور فور الانتهاء من ملء استمارة التسجيل.

  • Mark a passive verb with a ضمة over the initial consonant, to avoid ambiguity.
  • Arabic verbs acting on objects through prepositions often translate English impersonal passives.
  • The problem was investigated. -> بحث في المسألة.

Localization considerations

  • Adapt text to local language, customs, standards. Give the product the look and feel of a product written in Arabic, with idiomatic syntax and consistent terminology.

Accessibility (localization)

  • Accessibility options make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities, through a customizable UI, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.
  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Arabic-speaking markets. Double-check.

Applications, products, and features

  • Product names are rarely translated. Feature names are sometimes trademarked: IntelliSense™.
  • Version numbers always contain a period: Version 4.2.
  • Keep the source format, Arabic numbers with a period: Version 4.2 -> الإصدار 4.2. Where the context is in Arabic, use Hindi numbers with a comma instead.
  • Version numbers are part of version strings but are not the same thing.
  • Product, feature, and component names often sit in version strings.
  • Always translate version strings containing copyright information. Check the approved translations for All rights reserved and Microsoft Corporation.

Error messages

  • Make the target natural and empathetic, not robot-like.

  • Failed to … / Failure of … -> فشل; example فشل حذف الملف.
  • Cannot find … / Could not find … / Unable to find … / Unable to locate … -> تعذر العثور; example تعذر العثور على الملف.
  • Not enough memory / Insufficient memory / There is not enough memory / There is not enough memory available -> الذاكرة غير كافية; example الذاكرة غير كافية.
  • ... is not available / ... is unavailable -> غير متوفر; example ... غير متوفر.
  • With placeholders, find out what replaces them so the sentence is grammatically correct.
  • %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>
  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."
  • "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."

Keys

  • Key names, such as arrow keys, function keys, and numeric keys, appear in normal text, not small caps.
  • Most actions must also work from the keyboard.
  • Keep all key names in English where they name an action to perform or an instruction to follow, directly concerning the UI. There are no keyboards or stickers with all function keys in Arabic.
  • Translate key names where they occur in narrative or explanatory text.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands, or dialog boxes mark keyboard shortcuts.
  • & designates the keyboard shortcut: the character underlined on a menu or in a dialog box.
  • Keep keyboard shortcuts clearly visible. Avoid putting & on ligatures, such as alef with hamza.
  • Keep established shortcuts for commonly used commands, such as the File menu and all its commands, the same across all products wherever possible.
  • Avoid & on an English abbreviation unless necessary, as in &TCP/IP, where there is no Arabic alternative or it would duplicate.
  • Never assign a shortcut to أ; writing it needs the Shift key, which clashes with the Shift needed for the hot key.
  • Never assign shortcuts to ج, ب, ي, و, ر, ز, ؤ: they do not display properly with a shortcut assigned.
  • Avoid & with alef with hamza under: &إدراج.
  • Where English uses && for And, replace it with و.
  • Access key: letter or number typed to reach a labelled UI control, on top-level controls. Example F in Alt+F; in UI localization H&ome. Most use Alt.
  • Key tip: the character shown in the ribbon when Alt is pressed; in UI localization the last character after `. Example HomeH`
  • Shortcut key: a key typed to perform a common action without the UI, not available for every command. Examples Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most use Ctrl. Ctrl+letter and F1–F12 are the best choices.
