Sindhi (Devanagari, India) style guide

Apply these local conventions alongside the house voice and localization review. Source acknowledgments are in credits.

Address and terminology

Write clear, respectful Sindhi. Use तव्हां for formal address in this guide's product writing, and keep the register consistent across related messages. Recast English word order where needed, while preserving the actor, object, condition and uncertainty.

This page covers Sindhi in Devanagari. Use the separate Sindhi guide for its Arabic-script conventions. Confirm the requested script before translation; a change of script also needs its own spelling, layout and rendering review.

Use approved terminology and check agreement in the complete sentence. Do not infer that every loanword is masculine simply because one example treats a technical noun that way. An unfamiliar acronym may need an explanation of its meaning; spelling out its letter names does not provide one.

Spelling and linguistic marks

Devanagari has no uppercase/lowercase distinction. Retained Latin product names, acronyms and identifiers keep their required case. Preserve vowel signs and consonant distinctions in verified Sindhi spellings.

The nukta occurs in letters such as क़, ख़, ग़, फ़ and ज़. It is part of their identity, not a stray dot to remove. Correct text extraction errors against the original rather than deleting marks to make a word look simpler.

Use the encoded Sindhi implosive consonants ॻ, ॼ, ॾ and ॿ. Unicode no longer recommends the older representations built from ordinary consonants plus nukta and anudatta. This distinction does not authorize a blind substitution of every marked consonant: identify the intended letter first. Test the resulting characters in the actual font and text pipeline; see scripts and typography.

Abbreviations and punctuation

Recognizable abbreviations include डॉ. and जन., with their abbreviation dots. The supplied convention keeps एनजीओ or NGO, and एटीएम, without an added plural suffix. Preserve the number of organizations or machines in the surrounding phrase. Do not apply that convention to every noun ending.

Keep established Latin forms such as USB, UNESCO and USA when appropriate. Explain an unfamiliar term at its first relevant occurrence and then use the agreed short form consistently.

Use the danda । for declarative sentences in this guide's Sindhi prose. Full-sentence bullets take sentence punctuation; short phrases do not. Retain the period in a literal version such as 4.2 and in abbreviations that require it.

Apply punctuation to surrounding prose. Recast a cumbersome dash-separated sentence without dropping an actor or condition. Use quotation marks for quotations; follow house UI formatting for labels. A supplied preference for straight quotation marks is not a reason to change literal content or place every interface label in quotes.

Use ऐं for “and” in prose. Keep & in protected names, tokens and literal input. An escaped ampersand in markup is not a word to translate by substring replacement.

Numbers, dates and interface review

Use words for small numbers when natural in prose; keep exact measurements, limits and input values numeric. Keep values with their units, as in 30 cm, 1 h and 20 °C. The minus in −10 °C is not an en dash. Unit symbols have fixed case and take no plural ending or abbreviation dot. Test percentage formatting separately.

Use day–month–year order for ordinary numeric dates, as in 26/03/2025. Retain the month when the source gives a month and year, and do not invent a day. Preserve the source calendar and both endpoints of numeric ranges.

Avoid unnecessary gender assumptions without deleting a relevant person, role or owner. Replacing “their document” with “document” can change whose file the reader should use. “Healthy” is not an equivalent for “without a disability.” Follow accessible content and preserve the required interface action. Test whole count messages, substitutions, wrapping and task meaning with a proficient Sindhi reviewer.
