Thai (Thailand) style guide

Voice

  • Warm and relaxed. Less formal, grounded in honest conversation.
  • Crisp and clear. Write for scanning first, reading second.
  • Ready to lend a hand. Anticipate real needs, give information at the right time.
  • Clear, friendly, concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical language.
  • Technical terms for technical audiences. Common words for consumers.
  • Match source intent, not source words. Non-standard translations OK. Never translate literally.

Flexibility

  • Modify or rewrite translated strings to fit Thai customers. Understand the whole intent of the sentence, paragraph and page, then rewrite as if you write the content yourself. Remove unnecessary content.

  • Drive -> ไดรฟ์: general reference to any drive type (ฮาร์ดไดรฟ์ , ไดรฟ์ ซีดี, ฮาร์ดไดรฟ์ ภายนอก ฯลฯ). Use the specific drive type if needed.
  • PC -> พีซี: use for personal computing devices. Use คอมพิวเตอร์ for situations about PCs and Macs.
  • You -> คุณ: address the user as you, directly or indirectly.

Word-to-word translation

  • No word-to-word translation. Literal translation without understanding the paragraph or page sounds stiff and unnatural, and can be ridiculous.
  • Check the source text in the live pages. Do not translate a list of strings without context.
  • Split text into different sentences if that simplifies the translation. Omit descriptors to make the text snappier.
  • Windows 11 Insider Preview is here.: wrong Windows 11 Insider Preview อยทู่ ี่นี่แลว้ -> right Windows 11 Insider Preview พร้อมให้คุณสัมผสั แลว้

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Thai colloquialism of the same meaning unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, but only if that meaning is integral to the text.
  • If the colloquialism can go without affecting meaning, omit it.

Accessibility (localization)

  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Hardware and software components engage a flexible, customizable UI, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.
  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Thai-speaking markets. Double-check with the appropriate resources.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too (IntelliSense™).
  • Product, feature and component names often sit in version strings as they appear in the software.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information. Check approved terminology for the correct wording.

Software considerations

  • Clarity and simplicity are the key considerations.
  • Be as short as possible. Avoid unnecessary words.
  • Different devices, sizes and formats are used. The UI must fit all of them.
  • Achieve cross-platform consistency in products used on desktop, mobile and cloud.
  • Every principle may have an exception based on the product, the experience and the customer. Interpret the guidelines for the best customer experience.

Error messages

  • Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or report an error that needs a reboot.
  • Make target translations natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate as it appears in the US product.
  • Standardize standard phrases. Use another wording only if it works better in context.

  • In rare cases with no other character available, replace the Sa-Ra-Um (สระอา) character by typing ํ then Sa-Ra-Aa (า), for example ต่า.
  • Choosing the accelerator key under ต or ํา results in overlapped keyboard shortcuts.
  • Do not type in this order: ต + ํ่ + ํา =ต่า
