  • Always measure temperature in Celsius. Recalculate every other scale, for example Fahrenheit, into Celsius.
  • Display temperature as x°С: the value, the degree sign, then capital Latin C.
  • Put the minus sign - before a temperature below zero. The plus sign + is optional for zero and above, and is rarely used.
  • Examples: -45°C, 0°C, 35°C

Percentages

  • In documentation, including online documents, separate the percent sign % from the number with a non-breaking space: 10 %
  • Use no space before the percent sign in software and in references to the UI in documentation.

Sorting

  • Upper case of a character comes before lower case. Example: Kitob (the city) sorts before kitob (a book).
  • Non-alphabetical characters, for example @ ! #, sort before the letters of the alphabet.
  • Digits sort after non-alphabetical characters and before the letters of the alphabet.
  • Sort words by the first letter; if first letters are the same, by the second letter, and so on. A word that is the initial part of another word goes first. Example: badal, badan, badarg‘a

Geopolitical concerns

  • Check maps, flags, country/region, city and language names, art and graphics, and cultural content such as encyclopedia entries for sensitive or offensive material.
  • Check maps and other graphic representations of countries and regions for accuracy and political restrictions.
  • Re-check country/region, city and language names, even previously approved ones; they change regularly.
  • Check the appropriateness of cultural content, clip art, religious symbols, and body and hand gestures against the target culture.

Adjectives

  • English uses possessives often. In Uzbek, translate possessive adjectives as pronouns.
  • Omit the possessive adjective when the possessive affix on the noun already makes the meaning clear.

Articles

  • Does not apply to Uzbek.

Capitalization

  • Capitalize sparingly. Capitalize only when you have to.
  • A capitalized source term does not have to be capitalized in Uzbek. Example: MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface — (+) xabarlar uchun amaliy dasturlash interfeysi)
  • Do not capitalize ethnicity and nationality words unless first in a name. Example: en Uzbek -> uz (+) o‘zbeklar
  • Capitalize names of UI elements (commands, menus, dialog box titles) and program names. Capitalize the first word only. Examples Tarmoq kuzatuvchisi, Tashqi chegaralar
  • Mark names of UI elements with a font style, for example bold, or enclose them in quotes.
  • Capitalize acronyms and proper names.
  • Capitalize all words in country and state names (O‘zbekiston Respublikasi, Amerika Qo‘shma Shtatlari) and political names (Oliy Majlis, Vazirlar Mahkamasi).
  • Capitalize Internet.
  • Do not capitalize month names and day names (avgust, seshanba).
  • Do not capitalize Web. Example vebga ulanish
  • Do not capitalize languages, nationalities, or adjectives derived from them: yaponcha interfeys, fransuzlar, rus tili

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds.

Gender

  • Does not apply to Uzbek.

Genitive

  • Product names and non-translated feature names are proper nouns. Use them without articles in English.
  • Never attach a genitive s to a product name. Add to a product or component name with a hyphen, or use a periphrastic construction.

Modifiers

  • Does not apply to Uzbek.

Nouns

  • Keep English loan words as they are. Use them with Uzbek case endings.
  • For a new English loan word, check motivation (formal features that allow straightforward integration), analogy (an equivalent Uzbek term), and frequency (the class used most often in other technical documentation).
  • Keep noun-class choices consistent across a product. Agree the class with the translation team lead.
  • en Delete it from server. -> uz (+) Buni serverdan o‘chirib tashlang.
  • en Enter a password to log into the server. -> uz (+) Serverga kirish uchun parolni kiriting.
  • en DNS cannot resolve the server IP address. -> uz (+) DNS IP-manzil serverini hal qila olmayapti.
  • en Verify the name of the server’s certificate. -> uz (+) Server sertifikati nomini tekshiring.
  • Case names and endings: Bosh kelishik -> -; Qaratqich kelishigi -> -ning; Tushum kelishigi -> -ni; Jo‘nalish kelishigi -> -ga; O‘rin-payt kelishigi -> -da; Chiqish kelishigi -> -dan
  • Plural formation of loanwords: en Websites -> uz (+) Veb-saytlar; en Proxys -> uz (+) Proksilar
  • Never omit or reorder under English influence.

Prepositions

  • Uzbek has no prepositions. Use affixes instead.
  • en migrate to a city -> uz (+) shaharga ko‘chmoq

  • en import to overseas -> uz (+) chet elga import qilmoq

Pronouns

  • A pronoun replaces a noun phrase already mentioned or about to be mentioned.

Punctuation

  • Put a space after commas and periods.
  • Comma: Uzbek uses a comma as the decimal separator. Never use a space for this purpose; a space separates the numeral from the abbreviation.
  • In paper sizes, keep the decimal separator and the abbreviation in for inches, because the sizes are US norms.
  • en 5.25 cm -> uz (+) 5,25 sm
  • en 5 x 7.2 inches -> uz (+) 5 x 7,2 dyum
  • en Letter Landscape 11 x 8.5 in -> uz (+) Letter albom 11 x 8.5 in
  • Colon: replace a colon after alerting words such as Attention, Warning, Caution with an exclamation mark.
  • en Warning: -> uz (+) Diqqat!
  • Never capitalize regular text after a colon. It is a language error. This does not apply to lists and direct speech.
  • Introduce a single in-text note or example with Eslatma, Misol followed by a full stop.
  • en Note: For more information, see Chapter 1. -> uz (+) Eslatma. Qo‘shimcha ma’lumotlar uchun, 1-bo‘limga qarang.
  • Introduce a list of notes or examples with Eslatma, Misol followed by a colon.
  • en Notes 1. Note text 2. Note text -> uz (+) Eslatma: 1. Eslatma matni. 2. Eslatma matni.
  • Hyphen: use it to divide words between syllables, to link parts of a compound word, and to connect the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form. Examples (+) Veb-hujjat, veb-sayt
  • En dash: use as a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. Example (+) O‘zbekiston – Vatanim manim.
  • Use the en dash in number ranges, with no spaces. Example (+) 1–15 betlar
  • Em dash: use only to emphasize an isolated element or to introduce an element that is not essential to the meaning. Write the em dash the same as the en dash.
  • Ellipsis: use no space before the ellipsis. Example (+) Microsoft Outlook dasturi ishlatilmoqda...
  • Period: end each sentence with a period.
  • Put no period in an abbreviation of a measurement unit. Examples sm, kg
  • End bulleted items with a period if they are complete sentences.
  • Use no period if bulleted items continue an introductory clause.
  • Use no period for items in a list (chapters, sections, products, system requirements) that are neither sentences nor continuations of sentences.
  • Insert a period if the translation is longer than the US text or split into several independent sentences and a period improves the style.
  • Never put a period after just one word.
  • The same rules apply to instruction lists, captions, and callouts.
  • Quotation marks: in documentation use chevrons, with curly quotation marks inside them. Example «“Ha” tugmachasi»
  • No rule fixes the type of quotation marks; straight quotations are easier when translating. Example (“Olg‘a” tugmachasini cherting.)
  • Put the period outside the chevrons.
  • In software and on web pages use straight quotation marks, the same as in English.
  • Never use single quotation marks, also in software strings.
  • Parentheses: use no space between the parentheses and the text inside them. Example Fayllarni yakuniy jildga (Mening videolarim) ko‘chirishuchun Enter tugmasini bosing.

Singular and plural

  • Translate a plural noun after a number as singular. Translate a plural noun without a number as plural.
  • en 5 computers -> uz (+) 5 kompyuter
  • en computers -> uz (+) kompyuterlar
  • en 3 drivers -> uz (+) 3 drayver
  • en drivers -> uz (+) drayverlar

Split infinitive

  • Does not apply to Uzbek.

Subjunctive

  • Does not apply to Uzbek.

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • Use a non-breaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) in any abbreviation.
  • Where non-breaking spaces are not possible, for example in Help files, write the abbreviation without a space, so one letter does not move to the next line.

Syntax

  • Does not apply to Uzbek.

Verbs

  • An English verb can be used as a loan word. Loan verbs follow Uzbek syntactic and morphological rules.
  • en chat -> uz (+) chatlashadi, chatlashdi, chatlashyapti
  • en format -> uz (+) formatlaydi, formatladi, formatlayapti
  • en ping -> uz (+) pinglaydi, pingladi, pinglayapti
  • Translate an English gerund for a continuous operation as a gerund.

  • en Downloading an application… -> uz (+) Ilovani yuklab olish…

Word order

  • In error messages, describe the action before the purpose. Rephrase To skip creating your startup disk, click Cancel as Click Cancel to skip creating your startup disk.
  • Avoid personified inanimate subjects. Replace active constructions with passive ones where possible.
  • en Setup encountered an error while creating your startup disk. -> uz (+) Ish boshlash diskini yaratish jarayonida o‘rnatish ustasi xatoga duch keldi.
  • en Setup cannot find the remote computer. -> uz (+) O‘rnatish ustasi masofadagi kompyuterni topa olmaydi.
  • en Setup cannot get disk information. -> uz (+) O‘rnatish ustasi disk ma’lumotlarini ola olmaydi.
  • en Remove any existing settings to free space. -> uz (+) Har qanday mavjud sozlanmalarni bo‘sh joyga ko‘chiring.
  • en Attempt to remove current directory -> uz (+) Joriy katalogni ko‘chirishga urinish. Use a passive construction instead of Attempt to ....

Audience

  • Match the target audience. Make learning material for new users direct and friendly. Make IT Pro material more formal.

Style - consistency and idiomaticity

  • Give the product the look and feel of a product originally written in Uzbek. Use idiomatic syntax and terminology.
  • Keep terminology consistent.
  • Use Uzbek word order instead of word-by-word translation when it is more idiomatic, as long as the key message stays.

Tone

  • Mimic the tone of the source, and stay respectful.
  • Avoid word forms specific to a dialect.
  • Avoid wordiness and word-by-word translation.
  • Keep the tone accurate, encouraging, insightful, objective and user-focused.

Voice

  • Address the user as Siz. Capitalize it.
  • Omit Siz when the verb already carries the personal affix. Siz tugmachani bosing -> Tugmachani bosing
  • Never use swear, religious or racist words.
  • Siz addresses one person or a group, with no reference to gender or number.
  • Use the passive voice or rephrase where it suits the context.
  • en You are now connected to the Internet. -> uz (+) Siz hozir Internet tarmog‘iga ulangansiz.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate words in the UI, mainly button or option names, only for lack of space.
  • Use a non-breaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) in any abbreviation.
  • Where non-breaking spaces are not possible, for example in Help files, write the abbreviation without a space.
  • Hokazo -> (+) h. k.
  • Boshqalar -> (+) boshq.

Acronyms

  • An acronym is made of the initial letters of the major parts of a compound term, for example WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), RAM (Random Access Memory).
  • en IP-address -> uz (+) IP-manzil, full (+) Internet bayonnomasi manzili
  • en OLE -> uz (+) OBJT, full (+) Obyektlarni bog‘lash va joylash texnologiyasi

  • Never put a generic term after an acronym or abbreviation if a letter of the acronym stands for that term. Correct it even where the US English version has it.
  • Redundant: (-) RPC call, (-) HTML language, (-) TCP/IP-Protocol, (-) PIN Number
  • Redundant in Uzbek: (-) EHM mashinalari, (-) BMT tashkiloti, (-) CD disk, (-) DVD disk
  • In online help or documentation, spell out an acronym the first time it appears. Give the Uzbek translation, the US term, and the acronym.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are rarely translated. Feature names are sometimes trademarked too, for example IntelliSense™.
  • Verify that a name is translatable and unprotected before translating it.

Unlocalized items

  • Never localize trademarked names.
  • These words are written the same as in English, take all Uzbek affixes, and are pronounced differently: Adapter, Audio, Bit, Demo, Dialog, Disk, Format, Internet, Login, Media, Model, Modem, Monitor, Multimedia, Normal, Portal, Printer, Start, Server, Signal, Spam, Virus, Video

User interface

  • Translate all menus, menu items, commands, buttons and check boxes consistently across the localized product.
  • Translate a US command name identically in every localized application.
  • Translate command names as verbs, always in the infinitive: en Save -> uz Saqlamoq; en New -> uz Yaratmoq; en Print -> uz Chop etmoq
  • Check boxes and radio buttons: capitalize the names when they do not form a list.
  • A tooltip explains what happens after the user presses the button.

Messages

  • A status bar message is informational text about the active document, a selected command, or an active or selected interface item. It appears in the status bar at the bottom of the window.
  • Status bar messages refer to actions being performed or to selected items.
  • Status bar message format: en Edit (menu, Contains editing commands) -> uz (+) Tahrirlamoq, message (+) Tahrirlash buyruqlaridan tashkil topadi

  • Use one standard translation where the source phrases the same meaning in different ways.

  • An error message tells the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. It can prompt an action or state that the computer needs a restart.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style in error messages. Do not just translate the US string.

  • Find out what replaces a placeholder before localizing the message, so the sentence stays grammatical.
  • Placeholder letters carry a meaning: %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean 3 or 512; %c means f or s; %s means source.

Keys

  • The keyboard is the primary input device for text input. Most actions can also be performed with the keyboard.
  • Access keys, also hot keys, are underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes that run commands and perform tasks faster.
  • Slim characters such as I, l, t, r, f: allowed as hot keys. Any letter of the Uzbek alphabet can be a hotkey.
  • Characters with downstrokes such as g, j, y, p, q: allowed.
  • Extended characters: allowed.
  • An additional letter in brackets after the item name: not allowed.
  • A number in brackets after the item name: not allowed.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name: not allowed.
  • Duplicate hotkeys: allowed when no other character is available.
  • Assigning no hotkey when no more characters are available (minor options only): not allowed.
