Russian (Russia) style guide¶

Voice¶

Warm and relaxed. Natural, less formal, grounded in honest conversation. Occasionally fun.
Crisp and clear. To the point. Write for scanning first, reading second. Simple above all.
Ready to lend a hand. Anticipate real needs. Offer the right information at the right time.
Choose words for the audience: technical terms for technical audiences, common words for consumers.
Keep the general style clear, friendly and concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical or commercial language.
Non-standard translations are fine when they stay true to the intent of the source.
Never translate literally. Consider the intent and what the customer needs to know to finish the task.
Modify or rewrite strings so they are natural to Russian customers. Understand the whole intention of the sentence, paragraph and page, then rewrite as if writing the content yourself. Remove unnecessary content.

Omit needless words. Never use two or three words where one will do. Keep clarity and readability.

Choose words with a clear meaning. Avoid words that are hard for some users, such as children or elderly people. Replace some terms with generic words for clarity.

Choose single-word phrases over multiple-word phrases, unless the multiple-word phrase is friendlier and more familiar.

Never use verbal nouns instead of verbs. Never convert verbs into generic verb + verbal noun.

Words and phrases to avoid¶

Avoid an unnecessarily formal tone. Avoid the formal words and expressions below.

Word choice¶

Use terms common in the business or industry.
Use words that are specific and crystal clear, never vague.
Use words ordinary people use in daily life. Avoid bookish, official words such as процедура, unless they are necessary technical terms.
Use standard words, not slang.
Use verbs, not verbal nouns.

Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms and product names.
Convey the voice with shortened words and short words used in daily conversation.
en email -> ru почта. Use it instead of электронная почта if the sentence clearly refers to email.

Avoid word-for-word translation. It makes content hard to understand, sometimes ridiculous, and the tone stiff and unnatural.
Split the text into different sentences if that simplifies the translation. Omit descriptors before product names to make the text snappier.

Focusing on the user action: make choices and next steps obvious. Focus on the action the user must take.

Depending on the context, commonly used words such as аватар make the text sound familiar and friendly.
Providing how-to guidelines:

Inclusive language¶

Comply with local language laws.
Use plain language. Use straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, and several clear words over one complicated term.
Be careful when naming parts of the world. Never name politically disputed cities, countries or regions. For several regions, use equivalent references. Never mix countries with states or continents.
In text and images, represent diverse perspectives and circumstances. Show a variety of people in many professions, educational settings, locales and economic settings.
Never generalize or stereotype by region, culture, age or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names that reflect a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
No profane or derogatory terms.
No slang that could be considered cultural appropriation.
No terms that carry unconscious racial bias, or terms tied to military actions, politics, or controversial historical events and eras.

Avoid gender bias¶

Use gender-neutral alternatives for common terms. Never use masculine or feminine gender when referring to the user. Use neutral structures and verbs without gender bias.

For generalizations, use plural noun forms, for example люди, коллектив, коллеги, пользователи.
Never use gendered pronouns (она, ее, он, его) in generic references. Instead:
Rewrite in the second person plural or third person plural.
Rewrite with a plural noun and pronoun.
Avoid pronouns before nouns, for example документ instead of его документ.
Refer to the person's role, for example читатель, сотрудник, заказчик, клиент.

Where a placeholder or variable stands for a name, put the neutral Пользователь before the placeholder, or put the verb ending in parentheses.

When writing about a real person, use the pronouns that person prefers, он, она, они or another. Gendered pronouns are fine for real people who use them.
Use gender-neutral language in new products and content. Existing or legacy material need not be updated.

Accessibility¶

Focus on people, not disabilities. Never use words that imply pity, such as поразилаболезньwith or страдаетчем-либо. Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.

Use generic verbs that apply to all input methods and devices. In procedures and instructions, avoid verbs that make no sense with alternative input methods.

Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Read text aloud and imagine a screen reader speaking it.
Spell out words like плюс and около. Screen readers can misread special characters like + and ~.

Abbreviations¶

Abbreviate words in the UI, mainly buttons or option names, only for lack of space.
страница -> стр.
рисунок -> рис.
смотрите -> см.
и так далее -> и т. д.

час -> ч

Never abbreviate words such as например. Never abbreviate other words arbitrarily. Use only the commonly accepted abbreviations listed above.

Acronyms¶

Acronyms are words made from the initial letters of major parts of a compound term, such as WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
Translate English acronyms that have a well-known Russian translation. Check all acronym translations against approved terminology.
Never add an ending to an acronym.
en RAM -> ru ОЗУ
en OS -> ru ОС
Do not use ПК for PC unless space is restricted. Use компьютер. ПК is also fine to distinguish a PC from a Mac, as in 5 ПК или компьютеров Mac.
Use acronyms without an established translation as they are in English.
Never add an ending to an acronym. If the source has a plural ending, use the singular in Russian and reflect the plural meaning by other means, such as a plural verb, modifier or descriptor.
The gender of the acronym follows the main word in the full translation.
Add descriptors, usually the main word from the translation, to allow declension. Omit them under length restrictions, such as in the UI, or for fluency. Never omit the descriptor if that creates ambiguity.
Use English acronyms without a descriptive Russian translation. Expanding acronyms into descriptive Russian phrases expands the text and causes truncation.

Capitalization¶

Follow standard capitalization conventions. Use sentence casing for titles and headings: capitalize only the first word, as in a normal sentence. In Russian proper nouns of several words, capitalize only the first word.

Conjunctions¶

Conjunctions help convey a conversational tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone and style.
Add conjunctions freely to connect ideas so the text sounds natural.
en Add a display picture or video clip of yourself at the top of your window. Or use a dynamic display picture—a picture that changes when you send emoticons to your friends. -> ru Добавьте картинку или видеозапись в верхней части окна. Localizing colloquialisms, idioms, and metaphors¶

Culture-centric colloquialisms, idioms and metaphors are allowed.
Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism.
Replace the source colloquialism with a Russian colloquialism that means the same thing in that context.
If the colloquialism can be omitted without affecting the meaning, omit it.
A little humor is OK, but use it carefully. Avoid colloquialisms and idioms that are offensive or too expressive.
No irony or sarcasm. No jokes that elderly people might not understand. No jokes about currently popular topics, recent movies, TV programs or other pop culture events, because they stop being funny very soon. Never put too many jokes on one screen.

en We've hit a snag… -> ru Кажется, у нас проблема… A neutral word such as проблема is fine if a colloquial expression sounds awkward.

Nouns¶

Treat all program components and applications, such as wizards, agents, clients and browsers, as unanimated nouns.

Use these standardized plural forms:
компьютер -> компьютеры
драйвер -> драйверы

Numbers¶

One-digit numbers may be spelled out or written as numerals.
Where possible, spell out a number at the beginning of a sentence.
Prefer the numeral with currencies and units of measurement, including units such as MB or GB. Для установки потребуется: 100 МБ свободного места на жестком диске.

Prepositions¶

Use prepositions correctly. Translators influenced by the English source often omit them or change word order.
Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable.
Avoid formal, bookish prepositions.

Pronouns¶

Personal pronouns appear much more often than in traditional writing. That does not mean using a personal pronoun wherever English does.
Translate your only when it applies directly to the user or the noun belongs personally to them. Do not translate your when it serves a grammatical purpose with no meaning of its own, or when the belonging is obvious.
Translate your in your settings (settings the user made) and your files (the user's personal files), but not in your hand (obviously the user's hand) or connect your mouse (your adds nothing, it just means a mouse).
The same applies to I, me and mine. They are appropriate when the user is the focus. Do not translate every I, me and mine, and avoid unnatural-sounding sentence structures.
Never translate you and I as пользователь.
In some cases your and mine correspond to the Russian pronoun свой.
we and us usually refer to the company or its products. Translate them with мы and наш. Avoid Корпорация Майкрософт.
Avoid literal translations. Use personal pronouns only where they sound natural. Do not translate we as мы if it refers to a service or system, not to a group of people.
Можно изменить время установки новых обновлений. -> Вы можете изменить время установки новых обновлений.
Запомнить пароль -> Запомнить мой пароль
Рекомендуется регулярно архивировать личные файлы. -> Мы советуем вам регулярно архивировать свои файлы.

Punctuation¶

Do not use abbreviations. Approved acronyms are fine.
Avoid semicolons. Two shorter sentences are often better than one long sentence and easier to read.
Question marks are fine in places like FAQs and headings, to mark direct interaction with the user.
Stick to Russian punctuation rules. Never copy the punctuation of the source.
Use a colon before all bulleted lists, even if the source sentences end with a period. Exception: when the list is not an actual bulleted list but consists of several paragraphs, a period is fine.
Use commas before and after например.
Например, это может произойти, если ячейка уже удалена с листа.

If например stands at the beginning or end of an unattached clause (обособленный оборот), no comma separates it. Задайте допустимые единицы, например дюймы или сантиметры.
If например stands inside a parenthetical construction (вставная конструкция со скобками), use commas as usual. Некоторые элементы (например, списки рассылки) не удается экспортировать в vCard.

Replace a colon after Attention, Caution and other attention words with an exclamation point. en Caution: -> ru Внимание!
Never capitalize regular text after a colon. That is a language error. This does not apply to lists and direct speech. If a colon is followed by a new paragraph, it may start with a capital letter.
Three dash characters are used in Russian.
Hyphen: divides words between syllables and links parts of a compound word. In English only, it also connects the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form.
In Russian the hyphen takes no spaces before or after it, and never replaces a dash. en online shop -> ru интернет-магазин
En dash: used as a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. Omit the space only when the minus shows a negative number. 1 – 2 = –1 -> 1 – 2 = –1
The en dash is also used in number ranges, such as page numbers, with no spaces around it. en See pages 10–20. -> ru См. стр. 10–20.
En dashes are also used as bullets to separate list items.
Em dash: use it only where it has a grammatical function, for example to emphasize an isolated element or introduce an element not essential to the meaning. Never substitute hyphens for dashes.
Follow Russian punctuation rules for em dashes. Do not use an em dash just because the English source does. Add spaces around the dash.

Ellipsis: place it directly after the text, with no space. Use a true ellipsis (U+2026). Never use three periods (U+002E).
Period: use a period instead of a colon after words such as Note.

Quotation marks: use them for UI items such as menus and commands that have no special formatting like bold or italic.
In the software UI, product help and webpages, use straight quotation marks, the same as in English. Never use single quotation marks.
In printed documentation use chevrons, with straight quotation marks inside them: «кнопка "Готово"»
Where double quotation marks cannot be used for technical reasons, use a workaround to display double quotation marks "…" or «». Workarounds include two sequenced single quote characters '' and code such as " in HTML.
Parentheses: no space between the parentheses and the text inside them.
Period placement depends on what the parentheses enclose. If they enclose part of the sentence, the period goes after the closing parenthesis. If they enclose a full sentence, the period goes inside.

Sentence fragments¶

Sentence fragments help convey a conversational tone. Use them whenever possible. They are short and to the point, and especially helpful before lists of items and instructions.
Make sure fragments fit the context and do not break grammar rules.

Sentence structure¶

Use the active voice. It emphasizes the person or thing doing the action and is more direct and personal than the passive voice, which can confuse or sound formal.
Use the passive voice to avoid a wordy or awkward construction, when the action rather than the doer is the focus, or when the subject is unknown.

Too many passive structures. Speak about the user in the active voice.

Simplify. Short sentences are easier to read quickly.

Symbols and nonbreaking spaces¶

Wherever technically possible, use nonbreaking spaces so part of a word or phrase does not move to the next line. Use them:
As a thousand separator: 10 000
Before % in documentation: 10 %
Between a number and the following unit: 5 кг, 5 °C
Between a person's initials and last name: А. А. Сидоров
In contractions: и т. д.
Before a dash: Файл — это…
Nonbreaking spaces sometimes break generation of the final documents. Never put them in online help or documentation live content.

Verbs¶

Use simple verb tenses. Simple present is the easiest to understand. Avoid the future tense unless describing something that really will happen in the future and simple present is not accurate.
Use simple past for events that have already happened.
Use the active voice. It emphasizes the person or thing doing the action and is more direct and personal than the passive voice, which can confuse or sound formal.

Use the passive voice to avoid a wordy or awkward construction, when the action rather than the doer is the focus, when the subject is unknown, and in error messages where the user is the subject and might feel blamed.

Use the imperative, a command or request with an implied you, to save space and talk directly to the customer in procedures. Do not overdo it. The imperative can sound short and abrupt, and too many commands make the customer feel talked down to.
Never change you can (вы можете) structures into imperative ones. Prefer the imperative over you must (вы должны) structures.
Imperative forms are often used in help article titles. Translate them with an imperative verb phrase, not a noun phrase.

Nouns in headings can sound too formal and distant, or simply not fluent.
Use the future or past tense where it sounds more natural, even if the source uses the present tense.

Localization considerations¶

Adapt the translated text to local language, customs and standards.
The language must have the look and feel of a product originally written in Russian, with idiomatic syntax and terminology, and a high level of terminological consistency.
In many cases use Russian names rather than English: Edward -> Владимир, New York -> Владивосток.

Applications, products, and features¶

Application and product names can be trademarks and are rarely translated. Feature names are sometimes trademarked too, such as IntelliSense. Verify that a name can be translated before translating it.
If a product name, or part of it, is easily localized, it usually is. Always check approved terminology for the correct translation.
Always translate the preposition for in product names, unless the whole product name including for is trademarked or copyrighted. en Access for Microsoft 365 -> ru Access для Microsoft 365
Never decline a localized product edition name. en To activate Windows 11 Business: -> ru Чтобы активировать Windows 11 для бизнеса:
Version numbers always contain a period, for example Version 4.2. en Version 4.2 -> ru Версия 4.2
Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but technically they are not the same.
Product, feature and component names often sit in version strings as they appear in the software.
Always translate version strings that contain copyright information.

Software considerations¶

This applies to all menus, menu items, commands, buttons, check boxes and similar UI elements. Translate them consistently.

Arrow key names¶

Localize and capitalize all arrow key names, as in Keys.

Error messages¶

Error messages tell the user that an error must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or report an error that requires rebooting.
Apply the voice principles so the target reads natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate the messages as they appear in the source.
Many English error messages end with exclamation points. Usually do not use exclamation points in Russian. Judge case by case.
Use the target phrases below, but use another wording where it works better in context.
en Cannot …, Can't … -> ru Не удается…, Не может…, Невозможно…, Не можете…. Avoid translating cannot as нельзя. It can sound rude.

For a message with a placeholder, find out what replaces the placeholder so the sentence stays grammatical.
Placeholder letters: %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>.
"Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."
"INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."
Treat the placeholder as the actual element, such as a noun or numeral, and move it to the position the grammar requires. en %I64d%% CPU Usage -> ru Использование ЦП: %I64d%%
Strings with number placeholders may need different grammatical word forms depending on the value. Use one of three options.
Change the sentence structure so it is grammatically correct with all possible values. en %1 folders are detected. -> ru Обнаружено папок: %1.
Use abbreviations. en %1 days left for activation. -> ru На выполнение активации осталось %1 дн.
Change the structure so the noun is in the genitive case, which has the same form for all plural numbers. en Press the button for %1 seconds. -> ru Нажимайте кнопку не менее %1 секунд.
Never use forms like Найдено %1 файл(-a, -ов) or structures that become grammatically incorrect with some possible values.
For years, first find a grammatical structure that is always valid. If that is impossible, translate years as года or лет, using the most probable translation in each case.

Keyboard shortcuts¶

Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes are keyboard shortcuts. They let the user perform tasks faster. Examples: New, Cancel, Options
Whenever possible, assign keyboard shortcuts to Cyrillic letters or numbers, not to Latin letters, so users need not switch keyboard layout.
Keyboard shortcuts are often assigned automatically by a special tool.
When translating product help and other descriptive documents, check the actual Russian apps so the keyboard shortcuts in the text are correct.
Characters with downstrokes such as д, р, у, ф, ц, щ, Д, Ц, Щ: not allowed. Assign a shortcut to such a character only if there is no other option, that is, if all other characters already have shortcuts.
An additional letter in brackets after the item name: not allowed.
A number in brackets after the item name: not allowed.
A punctuation mark in brackets after the item name: not allowed.
Duplicate keyboard shortcuts when no other character is available: not allowed.
Leaving no keyboard shortcut when no more characters are available, minor options only: allowed.
Access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to reach UI controls with text labels. Access keys are assigned to top-level controls so the user can move through the UI quickly with the keyboard. Example F in Alt+F. Example in UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
Key tip: the letter or number that appears in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization the key tip is the last character after the ` character. Example: Home`H
Shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to perform a common action without going through the UI. Shortcut keys are not available for every command. Examples Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys are used with the Ctrl key. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys F1 through F12 are usually the best choices.

Keys¶

In English, key names such as arrow keys, function keys and numeric keys appear in normal text with sentence-style capitalization, not in small caps.
In Russian, write key references in all caps, except a descriptive name such as клавиша Windows.

Use these localized key names. Leave other names in English.

Shortcut notation¶

Write нажмите клавиши when instructing the reader to press shortcut keys, rather than нажмите сочетание клавиш. Separate simultaneous key names with a plus sign and no spaces.

English pronunciation¶

Pronounce English terms and product names left unlocalized as English words.
If Russian has an established pronunciation for a common term such as server, use the local pronunciation.
Adapt pronunciation to the Russian phonetic system if the original sounds very awkward in Russian.

Windows Server 2022: pronounce Windows as in English, and server and 2022 as Russian words.
Office Online: pronounce as the Russian words офис and онлайн.
Skype -> [skaip], as in English.
Pronounce acronyms like real words, adapted to the local pronunciation.
RADIUS -> [радиус]
RAS -> [рас]
ISA -> [иса]
MAPI -> [мапи]
URL is an exception. Pronounce it letter by letter with Russian pronunciation: [ю-ар-эл].
Pronounce other abbreviations letter by letter. Use the English letter names, adapting the pronunciation as needed.
ICMP -> [ай-си-эм-пи]
IP -> [ай-пи]
TCP/IP -> [ти-си-пи-ай-пи]
XML -> [экс-эм-эль]
HTML -> [ейч-ти-эм-эль]
SQL -> [эс-кю-эль]
URLs: leave out http:// and read the rest of the URL.
Pronounce www as [три дабл-ю].
Omit the dot, or read it aloud. If read aloud, pronounce it the Russian way, as точка.

Most punctuation marks, such as ? ! : ; ,, are implied by the speaker's tone of voice.
The en dash – emphasizes an isolated element. Pronounce it as a comma, a short pause.
Pronounce special characters such as / \ ˘ < > + - using the approved Russian translations.

Tone¶

Use a tone appropriate for the text and target audience. Use an informal, playful and inspiring tone for consumer products and games. Use a more formal, informative, factual tone for technical content.

Local usage¶

Translate the intended marketing tone into natural Russian without copying English syntax or cultural allusions. The local README is a pointer to marketing guidance, not an independent technical style specification.
