Telugu (India) style guide

Voice

  • Warm and relaxed. Less formal, grounded in honest conversation.
  • Crisp and clear. Write for scanning first, reading second.
  • Ready to lend a hand. Anticipate real needs, give information at the right time.
  • Clear, friendly, concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical language.
  • Technical terms for technical audiences. Common words for consumers.
  • Match source intent, not source words. Non-standard translations OK. Never translate literally.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms, product names.
  • App: use instead of application or program.
  • Pick, choose: use pick in fun, less formal, lightweight situations (pick a color, not choose a color); choose for formal situations. No select unless the UI needs it.
  • Drive: general reference to any drive type. Use the specific drive type if needed.
  • Get: OK as a synonym for obtain or come into possession of. Avoid for other meanings.
  • Info: use in most situations unless information fits better. Use info when you point the reader elsewhere (for more info, see <link>).
  • PC: use for personal computing devices. Use computer for situations about PCs and Macs.
  • Address the user as you, directly or through first- and second-person pronouns. No third-person references like user.

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Plain language. Straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word to a three-syllable word, several clear words to one complicated term.
  • No politically disputed cities, countries, regions in examples. Use equivalent references in one example. No mixing countries with states or continents.
  • Represent diverse perspectives in text and images. Show people in a wide variety of professions, educational settings, locales, economic settings.
  • No generalizing or stereotyping by region, culture, age, gender, not even positively. For job roles use names of varied gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • No profane or derogatory terms. No slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • No terms with unconscious racial bias, or tied to military actions, politics, controversial history.

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives. No compounds containing gender-specific terms (పురుషులురుషులు, స్త్రీలు మొ.లు మొ.).
  • విద్యార్థి/విద్యార్థినిని -> విద్యార్థి
  • వైద్యుడు/వైద్యురాలురాలు -> వైద్యులులు. Applies to the plural too.
  • నాయకుడు/నాయకురాలుయకురాలు -> నాయకులుయకులు
  • For generalization use plural noun forms (ప్రజలు, వ్యక్తులులు, విద్యార్థులు మొర్థులు మొ.).
  • స్నేహితుడుహితుడు -> స్నేహితులుహితులు
  • విదేశీయుడు -> విదేశీయులు
  • No gendered pronouns (ఆమె, అతను, అతడు) in generic references. Instead:
  • Rewrite to second or third person (మీరు or ఒకరు).
  • Rewrite to a plural noun and pronoun.
  • Use articles instead of a pronoun: డాక్యుమెంట్మెంట్, not అతని డాక్యుమెంట్మెంట్.
  • Refer to a person's role (రీడర్, ఉద్యోగి, కస్టమర్ లేదా క్లయింట్ంట్).
  • Use వ్యక్తి.
  • If the user has the appropriate rights, he can set other users' passwords. -> A user with the appropriate rights can set other users' passwords.
  • A developer needs access to servers in his development environment, but he doesn't need access to the servers in Azure. -> Developers need access to servers in their development environments, but they don't need access to the servers in Azure.
  • When the author opens her document …. -> When the author opens the document ….
  • To call someone, select his name, select Make a phone call, and then select his number. -> To call someone, select the person's name, select Make a phone call, and then choose the number you'd like to dial.
  • If you can't write around the problem, a plural pronoun (వారు, వారి, వారికి) is OK in generic references to a single person. No constructions like అతను/ఆమె. /ఆమె.
  • For a real person, use the pronouns that person prefers, whether అతను, ఆమె, వారు, or another. Gendered pronouns (అతను, ఆమె, అతని యొక్క, ఆమె యొక్క) are OK for real people who use them.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities. No words that imply pity, such as ఈ జబ్బుతో ుతో ఉన్నారురు or దీనితో బాధపడుతున్నారు.రు. Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
  • handicapped -> person with a disability; వికలాంగులు -> వైకల్యం ఉన్న న వ్యక్తి
  • normal person; healthy person -> person without a disability; సాధారణ వ్యక్తి; ఆరోగ్యకరమైనైన వ్యక్తి -> వైకల్యం లేని ం లేని వ్యక్తి
  • Use generic verbs that apply to all input methods and devices.
  • Click -> Select; క్లిక్ చేయండిక్ చేయండి -> ఎంచుకోండిండి
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Read text aloud and imagine a screen reader speaking it.
  • Spell out words like మరియుయు, అదనంగా, దాదాపుు. Screen readers can misread &, +, ~.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate in the UI (mainly button or option names) only for lack of space. Avoid extensive use. If in doubt, spell the word out.
  • ఐక్య రాజ్య సమితి -> ఐ.రా.స
  • తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్ర సమితి -> తె.రా.స
  • ఉదాహరణ -> ఉదా.
  • మొదలైనవివి -> మొ.
  • బ్యాచులర్ ఆఫ్ ఆర్ట్స్ -> బి.ఎ
  • Never abbreviate and, or, something, someone, or any word users might not recognize.

Acronyms

  • Localized acronyms: ఐరాస = ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి, తెరాస = తెలంగాణా రాష్ట్ర సమితి, ఉదా = ఉదాహరణ, మొ. = మొదలైనవివి
  • Many abbreviations and acronyms are standardized and stay untranslated. Add the English full spelling only if the acronym needs explaining. If the acronym is common, use it alone.
  • Do not localize or spell out: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization).

Adjectives

  • Adjectives give attributes to nouns and extend their definitions.
  • non-member -> సభ్యులు కాని
  • undefined -> అనిర్వచిత
  • invisible -> అదృశ్య
  • unavailable -> అలభ్యం
  • Possessive adjectives: translate only when possession is stressed. Otherwise ignore them.
  • Input your password. -> మీ పాస్‌వర్డ్ నమోదు చేయండి.మోదు చేయండి. Possessive adjective ignored.

Articles

  • English A, An, The mostly become ఓ, ఒక. Translating articles is not always necessary. Translate wisely.
  • An apple was eaten by the baby -> పాప ఆపిల్‌ను తినిందింది, leaving the article out.
  • Unlocalized feature names take no definite or indefinite article. Treat them as separate words; add suffixes and postpositions after the untranslated word.
  • What's new in Microsoft 365? -> Microsoft 365లో కొత్తగా ఏమి ఉన్నాయి?
  • Localized and transliterated feature names behave as ordinary Telugu words. All grammar rules apply.
  • Select a location closest to your office. -> మీ కార్యాలయానికి సమీపంలోని స్థానాన్ని ఎంచుకోండిండి.
  • For an English loan word already used, check: motivation (formal features that allow integration into the Telugu noun class system; names, trademarks and product names count as proper nouns); analogy (an equivalent Telugu term whose article you can use); frequency (the article used most often in other technical documentation).
  • Check approved terminology to confirm a new loan word and its article.

Compounds

  • Compounds must be understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds. Unintuitive compounds are an intelligibility and usability issue.
  • Telugu compounds fall in four major types; three occur commonly: noun+noun, noun+verb, verb+noun. Nouns combine freely with other nouns.
  • Noun-noun: వస్త్ర (cloth) + దుకాణం (Shop) = వస్త్ర దుకాణం (cloth shop)
  • Verb-noun: త్రాగుాగు (drink) + నీరు (water) = త్రాగు నీరుాగు నీరు (drinking water)
  • Product names stay unchanged. Add to a product or component name with a hyphen, or build a periphrastic construction.
  • Microsoft Word document -> Microsoft Word పత్రంం
  • Microsoft SQL Server Database -> Microsoft SQL Server డేటాబేస్
  • Compounds with acronyms, abbreviations or numerals:
  • 2-D gridline -> 2-D గ్రిడ్‌లైన్
  • 24-bit color value -> 24 బిట్ రంగు విలువంగు విలువ
  • 3D Maps -> 3D మ్యాప్‌లు
  • MFA registration policy -> MFA రిజిస్ట్రేషన్షన్ విధానం

Conjunctions

  • Conjunctions convey a conversational tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction is OK for an informal tone.
  • Old to new, en As <product> gains features, there is a risk that older content may not display correctly.: <product> లక్షణాలను పొందడం వల్ల, పాత విషయం విషయం సరిగ్గా కనిపించకపోవచ్చు.. -> ఉత్పత్తి లక్షణాలను పొందే ందే సమయంలోయంలో, పాత సమాచారం సరిగ్గా కనిపించకపోయే రిస్క్ ఉన్నది.

Gender

  • Use neutral language instead of stressing gender differences or stereotypical distinctions. The neutral approach also applies to scenarios, comparisons, examples, illustrations, metaphors.
  • Instead of naming the two genders separately, use a general term that includes both: people, users, persons.
  • Neutral noun, for concept descriptions and explanations: డ్రైవర్, ఆఫీసర్
  • Three separated genders అతనును, ఆమె, అది: only in exceptional cases such as License Terms, sometimes in tables (headers, column or row titles).

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Telugu colloquialism of the same meaning unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, but only if that meaning is integral to the text.
  • If the colloquialism can go without affecting meaning, omit it.

Nouns

  • Integrate English loan words into the Telugu noun class system.
  • Delete it from server. -> సర్వర్ నుండి దీన్ని తొలగించండించండి.
  • Enter a password to log into the server -> సర్వర్‌లోనికి లాగ్ ఇన్ ఇన్ అయ్యేందుకు పాస్‌వర్డ్ నమోదు చేయండిమోదు చేయండి
  • DNS cannot resolve the server IP address -> సర్వర్ IP చిరునామానుమాను DNS పరిష్కరించలేదురించలేదు
  • Verify the name of the server’s certificate -> సర్వర్ సర్టిఫికేట్ యొక్కపేరును పేరును ధృవీకరించండిృవీకరించండి
  • Inflection is not an issue. Most technical words are translated, and loan words work as Telugu words.
  • Select a theme. -> ఒక థీమ్‌ని ఎంచుకోండి. ండి. or థీమ్‌ని ఎంచుకోండి. ండి.
  • Plural: add లు (lu) at the end, like English S. The last part of the word changes in the same places.
  • Clients -> క్లయింట్‌లు

  • Downloads -> డౌన్‌లోడ్‌లు
  • Proxys -> ప్రాక్సీలులు
  • Administrators -> నిర్వాహకులులు

Prepositions

  • Use prepositions properly. Do not omit them or change word order under English influence.
  • Prepositions help convey a casual, conversational tone. Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable.
  • Translate prepositional phrases by context. Avoid anglicism. English prepositional phrase becomes a Telugu postpositional phrase.
  • Migrate from -> దీని నుండి మైగ్రేట్
  • import to -> దీనికి దిగుమతి
  • upgrade to -> దీనికి అప్‌గ్రేడ్ేడ్
  • in the toolbar -> టూల్‌బార్‌లో
  • on the desktop -> డెస్క్‌ టాప్‌పై

Pronouns

  • Telugu pronouns: personal, indefinite, relative, reciprocal or reflexive.
  • I: nenu - నేను
  • you: neevu - నీవు
  • he: atadu - అతడుడు
  • she: ame - ఆమె
  • we: memu - మేము
  • they: varu - వారు
  • me: nannu - నన్ను
  • you (object): neevu,meeru - నీవు,మీరు
  • him: atanini - అతనిని
  • her: aamenu - ఆమెను
  • us: mammalni - మమ్మల్ని
  • them: vaarini,vatini - వారిని,వాటిని
  • my: na - నా
  • your: mee - మీ
  • his: atanidi - అతనిదిది
  • her (possessive): amedi - ఆమెది
  • our: ma, mayaokka - మా, మాయొక్క
  • their: vari, vaariyaokka - వారి, వారియొక్క
  • mine: nadi,naayaokka - నాదిది, నాయొక్క
  • yours: meedi,meeyaokka - మీది, మీయొక్క
  • his (possessive): atani,atanidi - అతని, అతనిదిది
  • hers: amedi - ఆమెది

  • theirs: vaaridi, vaariyaokka - వారిది, వారియొక్క
  • Translate you as meeru (respect), not nuvvu (non-respect).
  • en You can always change your settings.: నువ్వు నీ సెట్టింగ్‌లను ఎల్లప్పుడూ మార్చవచ్చు. . -> మీరు మీ సెట్టింగ్‌లను ఎల్లప్పుడూ మార్చవచ్చు. .

Punctuation

  • Telugu follows the general punctuation characters and rules of English.
  • Comma , separates several names or items written consecutively, and marks short pauses.
  • ఈ పరీక్షలో ఉత్తీర్ణులైనది కుసుమ, కృష్ణణ, మోక్షిత, శివ, గాయత్రి మాత్రమే.మే.
  • Colon : shows that what follows proves, clarifies, explains, or enumerates.
  • దేశానికి ఉమ్మడి పౌరస్మృతి అవసరం : మోడీం : మోడీ
  • Hyphen divides words between syllables, links parts of a compound word, and connects parts of an inverted or imperative verb form. In Telugu it also connects a foreign or English borrowed word with Telugu words.
  • పాప్-అప్
  • ఇంగ్లీష్‐తెలుగు నిఘంటువు
  • En dash is a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. In number ranges, such as page numbers, no spaces around it. Telugu usually does not use the en dash. If the source has one, follow the source.
  • 2వ శతాబ్ధిలో పాల్కురికి సోమనాధుడు "నవలక్ష తెలుంగు" వలక్ష తెలుంగు" – అనగా తొమ్మిది లక్షలది లక్షల గ్రామ విస్తీర్ణము గలిగిన తెలుగు దేశము ము – అని వర్ణించాడు.ంచాడు.
  • కూర్చోవడం వల్ల 15–20 కేలరీలు ఖర్చువుతాయి
  • Em dash only emphasizes an isolated element or introduces a non-essential element. Telugu usually does not use the em dash. If the source has one, follow the source.
  • "దేశ భాషలందు తెలుగు లెస్స" స" —శ్రీ కృష్ణ దేవరాయలుణ దేవరాయలు
  • Ellipsis marks omission of words needed to complete the construction or meaning.
  • 1, 2, 3…
  • Period . marks a full stop at the end of declarative sentences and after many abbreviations. Same use as English.
  • ఈ ప్రమాదం నుండి తప్పించుకోగలగడం నీ అదృష్టం.టం.
  • Quotation marks: Telugu “” denote speech or a quotation.
  • నేడు “ఉగాది పండుగ”
  • Parentheses: no space between the parentheses and the text inside. Same as English.

Sentence fragments

  • Sentence fragments convey a conversational tone. Use them whenever possible; they are short and to the point.
  • Use the following steps. -> Here’s how
  • te long form కింది దశలను లను ఉపయోగించండించండి. -> te fragment ఇలా చేయండి

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • Match symbol usage to the English source. Replace or match English special characters correctly in the localized version.
  • Use ↓ arrow to select another option. -> మరో ఎంపిక ఎంచుకోవడానికి కి ↓ బాణాన్ని ఉపయోగించండించండి.
  • A non-breaking space prevents an automatic line break at its position. Also called hard space or fixed space. In HTML, replace the space with &nbsp.
  • In Distance between Vijayawada and Hyderabad is 248 KM., put a non-breaking space between 248 and KM so the text is not broken across lines.
  • Use the non-breaking space in Telugu wherever English uses it.

Verbs

  • Use simple tenses. Simple present is easiest. Avoid future tense unless the event really happens in the future and simple present cannot apply. Use simple past for events that already happened.
  • An English verb can be a loan word; it then follows Telugu syntax and morphology.
  • Be consistent in how you translate verbs in error messages. If your language can omit the predicate be, you may omit it in error messages, but stay consistent across all error messages. Be concise without changing meaning.
  • Translate English gerunds for continuous operations into the Telugu present continuous.
  • The document is too large. and Document too large. -> పత్రం చాలా పెద్దదిగా దిగా ఉంది. Be consistent in verb usage.
  • Access was denied. and Access denied. -> ప్రాప్తి ి తిరస్కరించబడింది.డింది. Use verbs and the same tense as the source string.

Accessibility (localization)

  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Hardware and software components engage a flexible, customizable UI, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.
  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Telugu-speaking markets. Double-check with the appropriate resources.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too (IntelliSense™).
  • For Telugu, do not translate product and feature names unless that product or feature is localized with its name. Same for application names.
  • Version numbers always contain a period (Version 4.2).
  • Version 4.4 -> సంస్కరణ ణ 4.4 correct
  • Version 2.5.1 -> సంస్కరణ ణ 2.5.1 correct
  • Version 4.4 -> సంస్కరణ ౪.౪ణ ౪.౪ incorrect
  • Version 2.5.1 -> సంస్కరణ ణ 251 incorrect
  • Translate the term Version and keep the numeric value, with its periods, as is.
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but are not technically the same.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information. Check approved terminology for the correct wording.

Error messages

  • Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or report an error that needs a reboot.
  • Make target translations natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • Something went wrong. -> ఏదో పొరపాటు జరిగింది.ంది.
  • Not enough memory to process this command. -> ఈ ఆదేశాన్ని అమలు చేయడానికికి తగినంత మెమరీ రీ లేదు.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate as it appears in the US product.
  • US-English error messages are occasionally inconsistent. Use one standard Telugu phrase for messages with the same meaning and purpose.
  • Standardize standard phrases. The US sometimes uses different forms for the same thing. Use another wording only if it works better in context.
  • Cannot … (File cannot be found), Could not … (File could not be found) -> … సాధ్యంధ్యం కాదు. These constructions mean unable to affect an outcome.
  • Failed to … (Failed to connect), Failure of … (Failure of connect) -> … విఫలమైంది
  • Cannot find … (Cannot find driver software), Could not find … (Could not find driver software), Unable to find … (Unable to find driver software), Unable to locate … (Unable to locate driver software) -> … కనుగొనడండం సాధ్యం కాదుధ్యం కాదు
  • Not enough memory (No sufficient memory on disk), Insufficient memory (Not enough memory on disk), There is not enough memory (There is not enough memory available, No enough memory is available on disk) -> తగినంత మెమరీ లేదురీ లేదు

  • For placeholders, find out what text replaces the placeholder so the resulting sentence is grammatical. Most source strings carry instructions on the replacement text.
  • %d, %ld, %u, and %lu: Number (such as 3 or 512)
  • %c: Letter (such as "f" or "s")
  • %s: String (such as "Click here to continue.")
  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!” -> "Checking Web <number> of <number>"
  • "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" -> "INI file "<string>" section"
  • English puts placeholders where they naturally occur. Numeral placeholders typically precede the noun. If the numeral follows the noun in Telugu, move the placeholder after the noun.

  • Know the exact placeholder string so a preceding adjective can inflect. Reword the translation to avoid an ungrammatical sentence where noun-verb agreement applies.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes are keyboard shortcuts. Examples: New, Cancel, Options.
  • Never translate the names of keys that appear on the keyboard.
  • The standard keyboard layout is the InScript Form. Bhava is the local Telugu keyboard version, only a little similar to InScript.
  • Do not localize Telugu keyboard shortcuts. Reasons: many people use Telugu/Kannada keyboards; translated Telugu and Kannada differ although they share the script and keyboard; one standard layout is used, so the same shortcuts cannot be localized for both languages; both soft and physical versions exist; many people can recognize English characters.
  • access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to reach UI controls that have text labels. Assigned to top-level controls so the user can move through the UI quickly with the keyboard. Example: F in Alt+F. In UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
  • key tip: the letter or number that appears in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization it is the last character after the ` character. Example: HomeH`
  • shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to do a common action without going through the UI. Not available for every command. Example: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys are used with the Ctrl key. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys F1 through F12 are usually the best choices.

English pronunciation

  • Pronounce unlocalized English terms and product names the English way.
  • If Telugu has an established pronunciation for a common term (such as server), use the local pronunciation.
  • Adapt pronunciation to the Telugu phonetic system if the original sounds very awkward in Telugu.

  • Skype [skaip]: product names are always pronounced as in the source language.

  • The sound of the voice implies most punctuation marks: ? ! : ; ,
  • Pronounce the en dash – as a comma, a short pause.
  • Pronounce special characters such as / \ ˘ < > + - using the approved terminology translations.

Tone

  • Match the tone to the target audience. Keep translations accurate, easy to understand, encouraging, insightful and user-focused.
  • For Telugu, use a cheerful tone for a relaxed, colloquial style.
  • For catchy, marketing-oriented translations, do not stick closely to the source. Translate the meaning, not word by word.
  • Avoid word forms specific to a particular dialect.
  • Use active voice in most cases.
  • You are now connected to the Internet. -> మీరు ఇప్పుడు డు ఇంటర్నెట్‌కు కనెక్ట్ చేయబడ్డారురు
  • Use passive voice only in exceptional cases: the subject is unknown, or in error messages where the user is the subject and active voice would blame them.

Local usage

Preserve program syntax, function names, tags, and placeholders. The Telugu PDF distinguishes message honorifics, plural forms, dates, numbers, and keyboard names; review those together in the rendered interface.
