Georgian (Georgia) style guide

Voice

  • Three principles: warm and relaxed, crisp and clear, ready to lend a hand.
  • Warm and relaxed: natural, less formal, grounded in honest conversation. Occasionally fun.
  • Crisp and clear: to the point. Write for scanning first, reading second. Keep it simple.
  • Ready to lend a hand: anticipate real needs, give good information at the right time.
  • Keep the audience in mind. Use technical terms for technical audiences, common words for consumers.
  • Choose words and grammatical structures matching the style of the source text.
  • Keep the general style clear, friendly, concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical language.
  • Choose non-standard translations when they keep the intent of the source better.
  • Never translate literally. Consider the intent of the text and what the customer needs to complete the task.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology for key terms, technical terms, and product names.
  • Use shortened words and short words from daily conversation.
  • Keep to approved terminology. Never use a different target term for an established approved term.
  • Georgian verbs already encompass the subject pronoun. Do not repeat the subject pronoun. Keep sentences short. Repeated subject pronouns sound un-Georgian.
  • en Enter -> ka შეყვანა; also ჩაწერა, აკრეფა. Choose the term matching the context.
  • en Reference -> ka მითითება. Use მითითება when awaiting relevant user interaction. It is more informal and down-to-earth. Use another suitable term in other contexts.
  • en Email -> ka ელფოსტა. Use instead of ელექტრონული ფოსტა when the context allows.
  • en Message -> ka ელწერილი or შეტყობინება. Use instead of ელფოსტის შეტყობინება when the context allows. Never write ელფოსტა for "(email) message".

Words and phrases to avoid

  • Avoid an unnecessarily formal tone. Use the less formal variant.
  • en (is) more (than): აღემატება -> მეტია
  • en Next: მომდევნო -> შემდეგი
  • en Also: დამატებით -> ასევე
  • en Following that: დაყოვნების გარეშე -> დაუყოვნებლად
  • en Provide guidance to…: დაკვალიანება... -> მითითებების მიცემა...
  • en Have an opportunity to…: შანსის ქონა... -> საშუალების ქონა...
  • en App: პროგრამა -> აპი

Sample voice text

  • Address the user to take action: en The password isn't correct, so please try again. Passwords are case-sensitive. -> ka პაროლი არასწორია. ისევ სცადეთ. პაროლისთვის მნიშვნელობა აქვს სიმბოლოთა რეგისტრს.

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language. Use straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, several clear words over one complicated term.
  • Be mindful when you refer to parts of the world. Named cities, countries, and regions must not be politically disputed. In examples covering several regions, use equivalent references. Never mix countries with states or continents.
  • Represent diverse perspectives and circumstances in text and images. Show a variety of people in many professions, educational settings, locales, and economic settings.
  • Never generalize or stereotype people by region, culture, age, or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names reflecting a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Never use profane or derogatory terms.
  • Never use slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • Never use terms carrying unconscious racial bias, or terms tied to military actions, politics, or controversial historical events and eras.

Avoid gender bias

  • Georgian has no gender distinction. Male and female stereotypes are not usually reflected in the language.
  • Where English uses they for he/she and their for his/her, use ის and მისი, not ისინი and მათი.
  • en Provide their login information to proceed -> ka გასაგრძელებლად ჩაწერეთ მისი საავტორიზაციო მონაცემები, not გასაგრძელებლად ჩაწერეთ მათი საავტორიზაციო მონაცემები

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities.
  • Never use words that imply pity, such as ინვალიდი or უნარშეზღყდული.
  • Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
  • en handicapped -> en person with a disability; ka ინვალიდი; შეზღუდული შესაძლებლობის მქონე -> ka შეზღუდული შესაძლებლობების მქონე პირი (შშმ)
  • en normal person; healthy person -> en person without a disability; ka ნორმალური ადამიანი; ჯანმრთელი ადამიანი -> ka შეზღუდული შესაძლებლობების არმქონე პირი
  • Use generic verbs that fit all input methods and devices. In procedures and instructions, avoid verbs that fail with alternative input methods.
  • en Click/Tap/Press -> en Select; ka დაწკაპუნება/შეხება/დაჭერა -> ka არჩევა
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Read text aloud and imagine a screen reader speaking it.
  • Spell out words like და, პლიუს, დაახლოებით. Screen readers can misread &, +, ~.
  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Georgian-speaking markets. Check the appropriate resources.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate words in the UI, mainly button and option names, only when space is short.
  • Use a common Georgian abbreviation when one exists. Some English abbreviations are also common in Georgian.
  • i.e. -> ე.ი.
  • e.g. -> მაგ.
  • etc. -> და ა.შ. or და სხვ.
  • See -> იხ.
  • URL -> URL
  • USB -> USB
  • Wi-Fi -> Wi-Fi
  • WLAN -> WLAN
  • SMS -> SMS
  • MMS -> MMS
  • Days: Monday ორშაბათი -> ორშ.; Tuesday სამშაბათი -> სამშ.; Wednesday ოთხშაბათი -> ოთხშ.; Thursday ხუთშაბათი -> ხუთშ.; Friday პარასკევი -> პარ.; Saturday შაბათი -> შაბ.; Sunday კვირა -> კვ.
  • Months, full form then abbreviated form; long date form equals the full form: January იანვარი -> იან.; February თებერვალი -> თებ.; March მარტი -> მარ.; April აპრილი -> აპრ,; May მაისი -> მაი.; June ივნისი -> ივნ.; July ივლისი -> ივლ.; August აგვისტო -> აგვ.; September სექტემბერი -> სექ.; October ოქტომბერი -> ოქტ.; November ნოემბერი -> ნოემ.; December დეკემბერი -> დეკ.
  • Common measurements keep km, m, cm, mm. Technical documentation also uses these.
  • Gigabyte GB -> (+) გბაიტი
  • Gigabit GBit -> (+) გბიტი
  • Kilobyte KB -> (+) კბაიტი
  • Kilobit KBit -> (+) კბიტი
  • Megabyte MB -> (+) მბაიტი

  • Avoid uncommon abbreviations. Reword a phrase instead when it does not fit the layout.

Acronyms

  • Acronyms are words made of the initial letters of the major parts of a compound term: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • Translate acronyms from their full form. Put the English full version plus the acronym in parentheses at first mention in a sentence.
  • Never put a generic term after an acronym or abbreviation when one of the acronym letters already stands for that term. Correct this in the localized version even when the US English has it.

  • Consult the glossary for common English acronyms.
  • Either leave an English acronym in English or translate it from its full form. Leave it in English when space is restricted.
  • en PRC -> ka დისტანციური პროცედურის გამოძახება, RPC
  • en PIN -> ka PIN-კოდი, PIN
  • In online help and documentation, spell out an acronym at first use. Include the Georgian translation, the US term, and the acronym.
  • (+) მონაცემთა წვდომის ობიექტები (Data Access Objects, DAO)
  • (+) ActiveX მონაცემთა ობიექტები (ActiveX Data Objects, ADO)
  • In the UI there is usually no space for all three terms. In wizards, spell out and localize the acronym at first mention. Under space constraints, or with no first occurrence, judge whether to leave the acronym as is or spell it out and localize it.
  • Users have different levels of product knowledge. An expert user understands DL, but an average user may need distribution list instead. Be consistent within a product.
  • Never create a new acronym from the Georgian translated term. Leave the English acronym or abbreviation intact.
  • en SMS alert -> ka (+) SMS გაფრთხილება
  • Many standardized acronyms stay untranslated. Add the full English spelling only when the acronym needs explanation. For a common acronym, the full form only confuses users. Use the acronym alone.
  • Do not localize or spell out: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization), ISDN

Adjectives

  • Possessive adjectives are less frequent in Georgian than in English. Drop my, your, their where possible.
  • en Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet. -> ka (+) დარწმუნდით, რომ კომპიუტერი დაკავშირებულია ინტერნეტთან., not (–) დარწმუნდით, რომ თქვენი კომპიუტერი დაკავშირებულია ინტერნეტთან.

Capitalization

  • Georgian has no capital letters. Capitalization does not apply.
  • English terms and acronyms keep the same capitalization as the source.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds. Unintuitive compounds hurt intelligibility and usability.
  • Form compounds either by joining words with a hyphen, or by putting the first word in the genitive and spelling the words separately.

Contractions

  • Georgian does not rely heavily on contractions. This applies only slightly.
  • en Some networks are not available in your area: long თქვენს რეგიონში რამდენიმე ქსელი არ არის ხელმისაწვდომი. -> contracted თქვენთან რამდენიმე ქსელი მიუწვდომელია.
  • en 3 devices are synced with your PC.: long თქვენს კომპიუტერთან დასინქრონებულია 3 მოწყობილობა. -> contracted კომპიუტერთან დასინქრონებულია 3 მოწყობილობა.
  • en 2 files are detected: long აღმოჩენილია 2 ფაილი. -> contracted ნაპოვნია 2 ფაილი.

Conjunctions

  • Use conjunctions to convey a conversational tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction is acceptable and informal.
  • en As product gains features, there is a risk that older content may not display correctly.: old ვინაიდან პროდუქტი ახალ ფუნქციებს იძენს, შესაძლოა, ძველი შიგთავსი სწორად არ გამოჩნდეს. -> new შესაძლოა, ახალი ფუნქციების გამო ძველი მასალა სწორად არ გამოჩნდეს.
  • en In case of usage the updated format, the new features will be supported.: old განახლებული ფორმატის გამოყენების შემთხვევაში, გათვალისწინებული იქნება ახალი ფუნქციები. -> new ახალ ფორმატს მრავალი უპირატესობა აქვს.
  • en Entering more keywords will result in better visibility of the article in search engines.: old მეტი საკვანძო სიტყვის მითითების შემთხვევაში, სტატიის საძიებო სისტემებში ხილვადობა გაუმჯობესდება. -> new თუ მეტ საკვანძო სიტყვას გამოიყენებთ, სტატია უფრო ადვილად მოიძებნება.

Genitive

  • The Georgian genitive marker is -ის, with a small hyphen -.
  • Add the genitive marker to localized words. Sometimes it is not needed on unlocalized words.
  • en Printer settings -> ka პრინტერის პარამეტრები
  • en Winsows installation -> ka Windows-ის ინსტალაცია
  • en Office templates -> ka Office-ის შაბლონები
  • en Windows OS -> ka Windows ოპერაციული სისტემა
  • en Microsoft account -> ka Microsoft ანგარიში

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Georgian colloquialism unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, but only when that meaning is integral to the text.
  • Omit the colloquialism when omitting it does not affect the meaning.

Nouns

  • Do not add the Georgian nominative suffix -ი to an unlocalized word. Use suffixes of other grammar forms in most cases.
  • en Microsoft Edge settings are applied to Mail -> ka (+) Mail პარამეტრებს იღებს Microsoft Edge-დან, not (–) Mail-ი პარამეტრებს იღებს Microsoft Edgeდან
  • Georgian uses seven declension cases with various suffixes. Add the relevant suffix to placeholders.
  • en Would you replace the incorrect %s? -> ka გსურთ არასწორი %s-ის ჩანაცვლება?
  • Form plurals by adding ებ.
  • en server -> ka სერვერი
  • en servers -> ka სერვერები
  • en server(s) -> ka სერვერ(ებ)ი

Prepositions

  • Use the correct preposition. Do not omit it or change the word order under English influence.
  • Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable and conveys a casual tone.
  • Georgian appends prepositions to the noun, so strings like upgrade to are hard to translate without the following word. Check the context and modify the following word or variable in the dialog box editor.
  • connect to %s, where %s is a device name -> ka (+) %s-თან დაკავშირება, not (–) s% დაკავშირება
  • connect to, where an object parameter follows and the order cannot change -> ka (+) დაკავშიერბა:, not (–) ...-სთან დაკავშირება

Pronouns

  • English uses you/your more often than Georgian. Avoid თქვენ, თქვენი where possible. Use neutral structures and passive voice.
  • Use you/your when it is needed to indicate direction.
  • en Use your mouse to draw circles on the page. -> ka (+) გვერდზე წრეების დასახაზად გამოიყენეთ მაუსი., not (–) ამ გვერდზე წრეების დასახაზად გამოიყენეთ თქვენი თაგუნა.
  • en Type your username and password. -> ka (+) აკრიფეთ მომხმარებლის სახელი და პაროლი., not (–) აკრიფეთ თქვენი მომხმარებლის სახელი და პაროლი.
  • en Would you like to add %s to your friends? -> ka (+) გსურთ %s დაამატოთ მეგობრებში?, not (–) თქვენ გსურთ დაამატოთ %s თქვენს მეგობრებში?

Punctuation

  • Georgian punctuation differs slightly from English. See the reference material.
  • Bulleted lists are the same as in English.
  • Separate sub-sentences and explanatory or conditional parts with commas, including after გთხოვთ (please) and around მაგალითად (for example).
  • (+) თუ გსურთ გამოიყენოთ სერვისი, გაიარეთ რეგისტრაცია., not (–) თუ გსურთ გამოიყენოთ სერვისი გაიარეთ რეგისტრაცია.
  • (+) გთხოვთ, წაიკითხოთ შეტყობინება, not (–) გთხოვთ წაიკითხოთ შეტყობინება

  • Never use a comma before და (and). Use a comma before ან (or) when it connects two sub-sentences.
  • (+) შედით სისტემაში, გახსენით პარამეტრები და შეარჩიეთ კონფიგურაცია., not (–) შედით სისტემაში, გახსენით პარამეტრები, და შეარჩიეთ კონფიგურაცია.

  • Use colons per Georgian grammar rules. Colon is the time separator, and introduces a list.
  • en 17:50 -> ka 17:50 სთ.
  • en Here you can find: list item one, list item two, and list item three. -> ka აქ ნახავთ: პირველს, მეორესა და მესამეს.
  • No colon after a salutation line. Use an exclamation mark or, increasingly, a comma.
  • en Dear users, -> ka ძვირფასო მომხმარებლებო,

Dashes and hyphens

  • Georgian uses two dash characters.
  • Use a small hyphen to divide words between syllables, to link parts of a compound word, and to connect the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form. No spaces in compounds.
  • en Internet connection -> ka ინტერნეტ-კავშირი
  • Use the en dash or a hyphen as a minus sign in math equations, usually with spaces before and after.
  • en 4 - 3 = 2 -> ka 4 - 3 = 2
  • Use the en dash or a hyphen in number ranges, such as page numbers. No spaces.
  • en The length should be 50 to 100 words. -> ka უნდა გამოიყენოთ 50-100 სიტყვა
  • Use the em dash only to emphasize an isolated element or to introduce a non-essential element. Put spaces around it between sections of a sentence.
  • en Rules — Terms and conditions of the service -> ka წესები — სერვისის გამოყენების წესები და პირობები

Ellipses

  • Georgian uses ellipses as in English, to imply an omitted word or a pause in speech.
  • en I never drink... coffee. -> ka მე არასოდეს ვსვამ... ყავას.
  • en Sending... -> ka იგზავნება... for the progress status of a process.

Period

  • US English uses a period as the decimal separator. Georgian uses a comma.
  • Use the period only to mark the end of a sentence.
  • en The file is successfully downloaded. -> ka ფაილი წარმატებით ჩამოიტვირთა.

Quotation marks

  • Use quotation marks for quotations. Georgian also uses them where US English uses italics for titles or foreign words.
  • Georgian opening mark is double low-9 U+201E, closing mark is left double U+201C. Usage matches German.
  • en Please see the article "Safe Browsing." -> ka იხილეთ სტატია „უსაფრთხოება ინტერნეტში“.
  • Straight quotes U+0022 are possible for a technical reason. Avoid them otherwise.
  • Georgian localization follows Unicode, so in most cases you can replace the straight quotes of the source. Georgian quotation marks then need no escaping, even when the source escapes straight quotes.
  • en Would you like to delete the sheet entitled \"%s\"? -> ka (+) გსურთ წაშალოთ ფურცელი სათაურით „%s“?, not (–) გსურთ წაშალოთ ფურცელი სათაურით \„%s\“?
  • Straight quotes must remain intact inside machine-readable language syntax.
  • (+) <img alt="სახლი" src="house.jpg" />, not (–) <img alt=„სახლი “ src=„house.jpg“ />

Parentheses

  • No space between the parentheses and the text inside them.
  • No period before parentheses. Parentheses always go inside the sentence.
  • en 4 pages (1200 words) -> ka 4 გვერდი (1200 სიტყვა)

Verbs

  • Use simple tenses. Simple present is easiest to understand.
  • Avoid future tense unless the event really happens in the future and simple present cannot apply.
  • Use simple past for events that already happened.
  • The Georgian verb system is complex. Up to eight thousand word forms can come from one verb stem.
  • Omit the predicate be in error messages where grammatical, and stay consistent across all error messages.

Localization considerations

  • Adapt the translated text to local language, customs, and standards.

  • Application and product names are often trademarked and are rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too, for example IntelliSense.

Version numbers

  • Version numbers always contain a period, for example Version 4.2.

  • Translate all menus, menu items, commands, buttons, and check boxes consistently across the localized product.

Error messages

  • Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt the user to act or state that the computer needs rebooting.
  • Apply the voice principles so the translation is natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate the US strings.
  • Keep the message clear.

Tone

  • Match the tone to the target audience. Use an informal, playful, inspiring tone for consumer products and games. Use a formal, informative, factual tone in technical texts.
