Nepali (Nepal) style guide

Voice

  • Style: clear, friendly, concise. Use everyday conversational language, not formal technical or commercial language.
  • Match the source style: choose words and grammatical structures that reflect the source text.
  • Do not translate literally. Translate the intent and what the customer needs to know to finish the task.
  • Choose words that are not standard translations when that keeps the intent of the source.
  • Use technical terms for technical audiences, common words for consumers.
  • Use short forms for a more informal tone, but only short forms that are already well established.
  • Use everyday words for a friendly, easy-to-read tone. Avoid everyday words that are too informal.
  • Address the user as you. Avoid third-person references like user.

Word choice

  • en App: use app, not application or program.
  • en Pick, choose: use pick in light-weight situations (pick a color), choose in formal ones. Do not use select unless the UI needs it.
  • en Drive: use for any drive type. Use the specific drive type if necessary.
  • en Get: use for obtain or come into possession of. Avoid for other meanings.
  • en Info: use in most situations unless information fits better. Use info when you point the reader elsewhere (for more info, see <link>).
  • en PC: use for personal computing devices. Use computer for situations about PCs and Macs.
  • en PC -> ne पिसि. Use in place of व्यक्तिगत कम्प्युटर because the short form is well established.
  • en App -> ne एप. Use for application, a computer program.
  • en You -> ne तपाईं. Use to address the user directly or indirectly. तिमी is possible, but तपाईं is more formal and widely used.

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language. Use straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, and several clear words over one complicated term.
  • Do not name politically disputed cities, countries, or regions in examples. In examples with several regions, use equivalent references. Do not mix countries with states or continents.
  • In text and images, show diverse people in a wide variety of professions, educational settings, locales, and economic settings.
  • Do not generalize or stereotype by region, culture, age, or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names that reflect a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • No profane or derogatory terms.
  • No slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • No terms with unconscious racial bias, and no terms tied to military actions, politics, or controversial historical events.
  • master/slave -> primary/subordinate; ne मालिक/दास -> प्राथमिक/अधीनस्थ
  • demilitarized zone (DMZ) -> perimeter network; ne विसैन्यीकृत क्षेत्र (DMZ) -> परिधीय नेटवर्क

  • brown bag session -> lunch and learn; learning session; ne ब्राउन ब्याग सत्र -> लन्च गर्ने र सिक्ने; सिकाइ सत्र
  • mother or father -> parent; ne आमा वा बुवा -> अभिभावक

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives. Avoid compounds with gender-specific terms (पुरुष, महिला).
  • For generalizations, use non-gendered noun forms (मानिस, व्यक्तिहरू, विद्यार्थीहरू).
  • Do not use gendered pronouns (पुरुष, महिला, ऊ, उनी) in generic references. Instead rewrite to the second or third person (तपाईं, कुनै व्यक्ति), avoid the gendered pronoun (कागजात/उक्त कागजात/सो कागजात instead of उसको कागजात/उनको कागजात), refer to the role (पाठक, कर्मचारी, ग्राहक, क्लाइन्ट), or use मानिस or व्यक्ति.
  • If you cannot write around the problem, a respectful pronoun (उहाँ/उहाँहरू) is OK in generic references. Do not use ऊ/उनी.
  • When you write about a real person, use the pronouns that person prefers. Gendered pronouns (उनी, ऊ, उनको/उसको) are OK for real people who use them.
  • उनी अफिस गइन्। -> उहाँ अफिस जानुभयो। (respectful tone, no specific gender)
  • If the user has the appropriate rights, he can set other users' passwords. -> A user with the appropriate rights can set other users' passwords.
  • ne यदि प्रयोगकर्तासँग उपयुक्त अधिकारहरू छन् भने उसले अन्य प्रयोगकर्ताको पासवर्ड सेट गर्न सक्छ। -> उपयुक्त अधिकारहरू भएका प्रयोगकर्ताले अन्य प्रयोगकर्ताहरूका पासवर्डहरू सेट गर्न सक्छ।
  • A developer needs access to servers in his development environment, but he doesn't need access to the servers in Azure. -> Developers need access to servers in their development environments, but they don't need access to the servers in Azure.
  • ne एक विकासकर्तालाई आफ्नो विकास परिवेशमा सर्भरहरूमा पहुँच चाहिन्छ, तर उसलाई Azure का सर्भरहरूमा पहुँच आवश्यक पर्दैन। -> विकासकर्ताहरूलाई उनीहरूको विकास परिवेशहरूमा सर्भरहरूमा पहुँच चाहिन्छ, तर उनीहरूलाई Azure का सर्भरहरूमा पहुँच आवश्यक पर्दैन।
  • When the author opens her document …. -> When the author opens the document ….
  • ne जब लेखिकाले उसको कागजात खोल्छे... -> जब लेखकले कागजात खोल्नुहुन्छ...
  • To call someone, select his name, select Make a phone call, and then select his number. -> To call someone, select the person's name, select Make a phone call, and then choose the number you'd like to dial.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities. Do not use words that imply pity, such as अङ्ग भाँच्चिएको/अन्धो/बहिरो/लङ्गडो or समस्याग्रस्त/रोगग्रस्त. Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
  • handicapped -> person with a disability; ne अपाङ्ग, विकलाङ्ग -> अक्षमता भएको व्यक्ति
  • normal person; healthy person -> person without a disability; ne सामान्य व्यक्ति, स्वस्थ व्यक्ति -> अक्षमता नभएको व्यक्ति
  • Use generic verbs that work with all input methods and devices.
  • Click -> Select; ne क्लिक गर्नुहोस् -> चयन गर्नुहोस्
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Aim for one verb per sentence. Read text aloud and imagine a screen reader speaking it.
  • Spell out and, plus, and about. Screen readers can misread &, +, and ~.
  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities. Some accessible products and services may not be available in Nepali-speaking markets. Check with the appropriate resources.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate UI words (mainly button or option names) only when space is short.
  • Translate these consistently: en Home -> ne गृह; en Profile -> ne प्रोफाइल; en People -> ne व्यक्ति; en Mail -> ne पत्र
  • Write SI units abbreviated as a single capital letter in Latin: W (watt), V (volt), J (joule), Hz (hertz), kHz (kilohertz).
  • Write other units in Latin or in Nepali: kg as कि.ग्रा., cm as से.मि.
  • Always measure temperature in Celsius. Recalculate all other scales (for example Fahrenheit) into Celsius.
  • Display temperature as x°С: the number, the degree sign, then the capital Latin letter C. x°से is also possible in Nepali.
  • Put the minus sign (–) before temperatures below zero. The plus sign is optional and rare for zero and above: –273°C, 0°C, 25°C.
  • Abbreviate information units always as: KB -> KB; MB -> MB; Bit -> Bit; Bit/s -> Bit/s
  • Use a non-breaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) in any abbreviation.
  • If non-breaking spaces are not available (Help files, for example), write the abbreviation without a space so one letter does not move to the next line.
  • Do not abbreviate words the Nepali Sabdakosh defines in full: en Pound -> ne पाउण्ड; en Degree -> ne डिग्री; en Ruble -> ne रूबल; en Yuan -> ne यूआन; en Yen -> ne येन

Acronyms

  • Acronyms are made of the initial letters of the main parts of a compound term: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • Nepali has no capitalization, so the writing system separates abbreviations from acronyms of names and organizations. Transliterate the acronym as a word: UNESCO -> युनेस्को, not युएनईएससिओ.
  • Localized acronyms: P.T.O. (Please turn over) -> कृ.पा.प. (कृपया पाना पल्टाउनुहोस्); PIN -> पिन
  • Unlocalized acronyms have no fixed rule. Modern Nepali keeps many popular English abbreviated terms: LAN -> ल्यान; UNESCO -> युनेस्को; UNICEF -> युनिसेफ; UNICODE -> युनिकोड; ZIP -> जिप

Adjectives

  • An adjective limits or specifies information about a noun.
  • Adjectives that end in -ओ change for masculine -ओ, feminine -ई, or plural -आ.
  • Adjectives derived from Sanskrit have no inflection: असल (good) gives असल केटा (good boy), असल केटी (good girl), असल गाउँलेहरू (good villagers).
  • The suffix -इलो makes adjectives from nouns: हाँस (smile) -> हँसिलो (smiling). The suffix -ली works the same way: गोर्खाली (in connection with the Gurkhas).
  • en New York is a beautiful city. -> ne न्यूयोर्क एक सुन्दर सहर हो।
  • en I have learnt many languages. -> ne मैले धेरै भाषा सिकेको छु।
  • en Adding some sugar will make the coffee tastier. -> ne थोरै चिनी थप्नाले कफी अझ स्वादिलो हुनेछ।
  • en This is the best day of my life. -> ne यो मेरो जिन्दगीको सबैभन्दा राम्रो दिन हो।
  • Possessive adjectives: मेरो (mine), तिम्रो (your), तपाइँको (your, respectful), उनीहरूको (their), उसको (his), हाम्रो (our).
  • English uses possessives often. Nepali uses the forms above instead.

Articles

  • Nepali has no articles. Do not translate every a or an.
  • Where context demands, use अव्यय terms: A/An = कुनै, एउटा, एक (singular, uncertainty); The = उक्त, यो, त्यो, यही, त्यही (any number, more certainty).
  • Use unlocalized product and feature names without articles. Do not attach a genitive s. Add to a product or component name with a hyphen or a periphrastic construction: Microsoft's products -> Microsoft products, Products by Microsoft.
  • Treat product names and unlocalized feature names as proper nouns in Nepali.
  • en Windows Mail shares your Internet Connection settings with Microsoft Edge -> ne Windows Mail ले Microsoft Edge सँग तपाइँको इन्टरनेट सेटिङहरू साझा गर्दछ
  • en Website addresses will be sent to Microsoft -> ne वेबसाइट ठेगानाहरू Microsoft मा पठाइने छन्
  • Use translated feature names with a definite or indefinite article. They are not proper names.
  • en Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse -> ne विन्डो सक्रिय बनाउन त्यसमाथि माउस होभर गर्नुहोस्
  • en Select a location closest to your office -> ne तपाईंको कार्यालयको सबैभन्दा नजिकको स्थान चयन गर्नुहोस्
  • For an English loan word already used, check motivation (formal features that allow integration into the Nepali noun class system), analogy (an equivalent Nepali term whose article you can use), and frequency (the article used most often in other technical documentation).
  • Always check approved terminology to confirm a new loan word and its article.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds. Unintuitive compounds are an intelligibility and usability problem.
  • English forms noun and verb compounds often. Nepali does not always compound.
  • en Internet Accounts -> ne इन्टरनेट खाताहरू
  • en Logon script processing -> ne लगअन स्क्रिप्ट प्रशोधन हुँदैछ
  • en Internet News Server Name -> ne इन्टरनेट समाचार सर्भर नाम

Conjunctions

  • Use conjunctions to convey a conversational tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction is informal and acceptable.
  • en old As <product> gains features, there is a risk that older content may not display correctly. -> en new But because of these features older content may not display correctly.
  • en As <product> gains features, there is a risk that older content may not display correctly.: ne old जब <product> ले सुविधाहरू प्राप्त गर्छ, पुराना सामग्रीहरू राम्रोसँग प्रदर्शन नहुन सक्छ। -> ne new तर यी सुविधाहरूका कारण पुराना सामग्रीहरू राम्ररी प्रदर्शन नहुन सक्छन्।
  • en Due to installation of downloaded updates some of the old features may not function.: ne old डाउनलोड गरिएको अद्यावधिकहरू स्थापना गरेपछि केही पुराना सुविधाहरू नचल्न सक्छन्। -> ne new तर यी डाउनलोडहरू स्थापना गर्नाले केही पुराना सुविधाहरू नचल्न सक्छन्।
  • en Install your new Windows, your old programs may not function.: ne old नयाँ Windows स्थापना गर्नाले तपाईंका केही प्रोग्रामहरू नचल्न सक्छन्। -> ne new तर नयाँ Windows स्थापना गर्नुहोस्, तपाईंका पुराना प्रोग्रामहरू नचल्न सक्छन्।

Gender

  • Nepali has three genders: masculine, feminine, neuter.
  • पुलिङ्ग: a singular noun that ends with the vowel आ is masculine.
  • स्त्रीलिङ्ग: a singular noun that ends with the vowel ई is feminine.
  • समलिङ्गी: a plural noun that ends with ए is neuter.

Genitive

  • Nepali nouns do not inflect for case. Postpositions act like case markers. They are clitics that attach to a whole phrase, not a single word.
  • -को is possessive. -ले is ergative in the past tense and also instrumental. -लाई marks the direct object on animate nouns and the indirect object on all nouns.
  • Two-part postpositions combine -को or -भन्दा with another word: -को बारेमा (about), -को लागि (for), -भन्दा माथि (above).
  • Do not attach a genitive s to product names. Write Microsoft Office Word, not Microsoft Office Word's.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Nepali colloquialism unless it is a perfect and natural fit for that context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, but only if the meaning is an integral part of the text.
  • If the colloquialism can be omitted without affecting the meaning, omit it.

Nouns

  • Integrate English loan words into the Nepali noun class system. Check motivation, analogy (an equivalent Nepali term), and frequency in other technical documentation.
  • en Delete this server. -> ne यसलाई सर्भरबाट हटाउनुहोस्।
  • en Enter a password to log into the server. -> ne सर्भरमा लग इन गर्न पासवर्ड प्रविष्ट गर्नुहोस्।
  • en DNS cannot resolve the server IP address. -> ne DNS ले सर्भरको आइपी ठेगाना समाधान गर्न सक्दैन।
  • en Verify the name of the server's certificate. -> ne सर्भरको प्रमाणपत्रको नाम प्रामणित गर्नुहोस्।
  • Inflection changes the end of a word according to its function. It derives the meaning of the original word and does not create a new word. Nominal inflection affects nouns, verbal inflection affects verbs.
  • Nepali has many inflections. In Devanagari, postpositions attach to the word they accompany, so do not confuse nominal inflection with an added postposition.
  • English loanwords inflect for number: en Clients -> ne क्लाइन्टहरू; en Websites -> ne वेबसाइटहरू; en Downloads -> ne डाउनलोडहरू; en Proxys -> ne प्रोक्सीहरू; en Administrators -> ne व्यवस्थापकहरू
  • Form the plural by adding हरू: मेरो कार (singular कार) -> मेरा कारहरू (plural कारहरू).

Prepositions

  • Use prepositions correctly. Do not omit them or change the word order under English influence.
  • Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable and conveys a conversational tone.
  • Translate prepositional phrases by context. Avoid anglicism.
  • en import to -> ne मा आयात गर्नुहोस्
  • en Import from -> ne बाट आयात गर्नुहोस्
  • en export to -> ne मा निर्यात गर्नुहोस्
  • en export from -> ne बाट निर्यात गर्नुहोस्
  • en update to -> ne मा अद्यावधिक गर्नुहोस्
  • en upgrade to -> ne मा स्तरवृद्धि गर्नुहोस्
  • en Change to -> ne मा परिवर्तन गर्नुहोस्
  • en Click on -> ne मा क्लिक गर्नुहोस्
  • en Connect to -> ne मा जडान गर्नुहोस्

Pronouns

  • Address the user directly with first- and second-person pronouns. Avoid third-person references like user.
  • Frequent pronouns: मेरो, तिमी, तपाईं, ऊ, तिम्रो.
  • Nepali uses different pronouns by age and position: तँ for people of low position or younger than you; तिमी for people of the same position or age group; तपाईं for people of higher position or older than you.
  • en old Users can change when new updates get installed. -> en new You can change when new updates get installed.
  • ne old अद्यावधिकहरू स्थापना भएपछि प्रयोगकर्ताहरूले परिवर्तन गर्न सक्नेछन्। -> ne new नयाँ अद्यावधिक स्थापना भएपछि तपाईं परिवर्तन गर्न सक्नुहुन्छ।

Punctuation

  • Do not use abbreviations. Approved acronyms are OK.
  • No semicolons. Two short sentences read better than one long sentence.
  • No exclamation marks. Choose stronger words.
  • Use an em dash to set off an isolated element or to introduce a non-essential item.
  • Bulleted lists use the same sign as English.
  • Comma (,) separates consecutive names or items and marks a short pause. Example: राम, श्याम, हरि
  • Colon (:) shows that what follows proves, clarifies, explains, or enumerates. Example: थप जानकारीका लागि कृपया यहाँ सम्पर्क गर्नुहोस्:
  • Hyphen divides words between syllables, links parts of a compound, and connects the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form. Example: Pop-up = पप-अप, Drop-down = ड्रप-डाउन
  • En dash is the minus sign, usually with spaces around it. It replaces the word to. Example: 10–5 p.m.
  • En dash also marks number ranges, with no spaces. Example: from page No. 1-5, पाना 1-5 सम्म
  • Em dash marks an isolated element, a break in thought, or an added phrase. Example: रामको गाडी―जुन रातो थियो―हिजो राती दुर्घटनामा पर्‍यो।
  • Ellipsis (suspension points) marks an omission from a sentence. Example: मैले धेरै प्रयास गर्न खोजेँ।
  • Period (.) follows many abbreviations. Example: डा. प्रेम प्रसाद
  • Quotation marks mark speech or a quotation. US source strings may put English quotation marks around software references. “” and ‘’ both mark speech or a quotation. Examples: “आज गणेश चतुर्थी”, रामले सोध्यो, ‘मेरो कार कता हरायो?’
  • No space between the parentheses and the text inside them. Example: (कृपया जुत्ता फुकाल्नुहोला।)

Sentence fragments

  • Use sentence fragments where possible. They are short, to the point, and conversational.
  • en Use the following steps:: long निम्न चरणहरू प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्: -> fragment निम्नानुसार गर्नुहोस्:
  • en Are you sure you want to continue with this action?: long तपाईं निश्चित रूपमा यो कार्य जारी राख्‍न चाहनुहुन्छ? -> fragment तपाईं साँच्चिकै यो कार्य जारी राख्न चाहनुहुन्छ?
  • en There isn't enough memory available to perform function.: long यो प्रकार्य कार्यसम्पादन गर्नका लागि पर्याप्त मेमोरी उपलब्ध छैन। -> fragment यो कार्य गर्नका लागि पर्याप्त मेमोरी छैन।

Verbs

  • Use simple tenses. Prefer the simple present. Avoid the future tense unless the event really happens in the future. Use the simple past for events that already happened.
  • Translate verbs in error messages consistently. If your language can omit the predicate be, omit it, but stay consistent across all error messages. Be concise without changing the meaning.
  • en The document is too large. / Document too large. -> ne कागजातको साइज एकदमै ठुलो भयो। Be consistent with the verb to be.
  • en Access was denied. / Access denied. -> ne पहुँच अस्वीकृत गरियो। In complete sentences, use verbs and the same tense as the source.
  • en The file '%s' is an unknown graphics format. -> ne ‘%s’ फाइल अज्ञात ग्राफिक्स फर्म्याट हो। Rephrase is with have if that gives a better translation.
  • en An unknown error has occurred. / No error occurred. -> ne अज्ञात त्रुटि देखापर्‍यो। / त्रुटि देखा परेन। Shorten where possible, for example Unknown error. / No error.
  • en A problem occurred while trying to connect to the network share '%1!s!'. -> ne नेटवर्क साझेदारी '%1!s!' मा जडान गर्ने प्रयास गर्दा एउटा समस्या भयो। Shorten and rephrase to A problem occurred while connecting to the network share '%1!s!'.
  • en The application may attempt to convert the graphic. -> ne यो एप्लिकेसनले ग्राफिक्सलाई रूपान्तरण गर्ने प्रयास गर्न सक्छ। Rephrase may + Verb as Verb + possibly.
  • Nepali verbs convey action (bring, read, walk, run) or a state of being (exist, stand). A verb may agree with the person, gender, and number of its subject or object.
  • en I write -> ne म लेख्छु
  • en I drive -> ne म गाडी चलाउँछु
  • en I love -> ne म माया गर्छु
  • Translate English gerunds for continuous operations. If an English heading starts with a gerund, use a nominalized form in Nepali.
  • en Sending a file -> ne फाइल पठाउँदै
  • en Using styles -> ne शैलीहरू प्रयोग गर्दै

Localization considerations

  • Adapt the translated text to the local language, customs, and standards.
  • Make the language look and feel as if written originally in Nepali, with idiomatic syntax and terminology, and keep terminological consistency high.
  • Always use current terminology and phrases from the most recent approved terminology databases and glossaries.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are rarely translated. Feature names are sometimes trademarked too (IntelliSense™).
  • Nepali has no specific rules for trademarking applications, products, and features.
  • Version numbers always contain a period (Version 4.2): en WCAG 6.2 -> ne WCAG 6.2
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but are not the same thing.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information.

Software considerations

  • This covers all menus, menu items, commands, buttons, and check boxes. Translate them consistently in the localized product.

Error messages

  • Error messages tell the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt an action or say that the computer needs a reboot.
  • Make the target translation natural and empathetic, not robotic.
  • en Something went wrong. -> ne केही कुरा गडबड भयो।
  • en Not enough memory to process this command. -> ne यो कमान्ड सम्पन्न गर्नका लागि पर्याप्त मेमोरी छैन।
  • Use consistent terminology and language style in localized error messages. Do not just translate them as they appear in the US product.
  • Never use the first person singular in Nepali error messages. The computer does not talk to the user. Use the passive voice instead.
  • Standardize standard phrases. The US source sometimes uses different forms for the same thing. Whatever form the source uses, use the passive voice in Nepali.
  • en Cannot … -> ne गर्न सकिँदैन...; example यो फाइल हटाउन सकिँदैन/सकिएन
