Malayalam (India) style guide

Voice

  • Three voice principles: warm and relaxed, crisp and clear, ready to lend a hand.
  • Warm and relaxed: natural, less formal, grounded in honest conversation. Occasionally fun.
  • Crisp and clear: to the point. Write for scanning first, reading second. Make it simple above all.
  • Ready to lend a hand: show customers you are on their side. Anticipate real needs. Offer good information at the right time.
  • Keep the audience in mind. Use technical terms for technical audiences. For consumers use common words and phrases.

Choices that reflect voice

  • Choose words and grammatical structures that reflect the same style as the source text.
  • Consider the needs of the audience and the intent of the text.
  • Keep the general style clear, friendly, concise.
  • Use language like everyday conversation, not the formal technical language of technical and commercial content.
  • Choose words that are not standard translations when that stays truer to the intent of the source.
  • Do not translate literally. Consider the intent of the text and what the customer needs to know to complete the task.

Words and phrases to avoid

  • Avoid an unnecessarily formal tone. Avoid ദയവായി, വന്നാലുംും, താങ്കൾ, അങ്ങ്.

Word choice

  • Use approved terminology, above all for key terms, technical terms and product names.
  • Prefer short, simple words from everyday conversation. Short words are friendlier, less formal, save screen space and read faster.
  • App: use app, not application or program.
  • Pick, choose: use pick in fun, less formal, light-weight situations (pick a color, not choose a color); use choose for formal situations. Do not use select unless the UI needs it.
  • Drive: for general reference to any drive type. Use the specific drive type if needed.
  • Get: fine as a synonym for obtain or come into possession of. Avoid it for other general meanings.
  • Info: use in most situations unless information fits better. Use info when you point the reader elsewhere (for more info, see <link>).

  • You: address the user as you, directly or indirectly, with first- and second-person pronouns. Avoid third-person references such as user, which sound formal and impersonal.

Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language. Use straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable word, and several clear words over one complicated term.
  • Be mindful when you refer to various parts of the world. If you name cities, countries or regions, make sure they are not politically disputed. In examples that refer to several regions use equivalent references. Do not mix countries with states or continents.
  • In text and images, represent diverse perspectives and circumstances. Show people from all walks of life in a wide variety of professions, educational settings, locales and economic settings.
  • Do not generalize or stereotype people by region, culture, age or gender, not even a positive stereotype. For job roles, choose names that reflect a variety of gender identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • No profane or derogatory terms.
  • No slang that could count as cultural appropriation.
  • No terms that carry unconscious racial bias, and no terms tied to military actions, politics or controversial historical events and eras.
  • master/slave -> primary/subordinate; യജമാനൻ/അടിമ/അടിമ -> സീനിയർ/ജൂനിയർ
  • hang -> stop responding; മറുപടി പടി പറയരുത്ത് -> പ്രതികരിക്കുന്നത് ന്നത് നിർത്തൂത്തൂ
  • guru -> expert; ഗുരു -> വിദഗ്‌ദ്ധർ
  • pow wow -> meeting; ഒത്തുചേരൽ -> മീറ്റിംഗ്
  • guys, ladies and gentlemen -> colleagues, everyone, all; ഗൈസ്; ലേഡീസ് ആൻഡ് ഡ് ജെന്റിൽമാൻ -> സഹപ്രവർത്തകർ, എല്ലാവരുംും, എല്ലാ ലാ ആളുകളുംം
  • brown bag session -> lunch and learn, learning session; സ്വന്തം ടിഫിൻ കഴിക്കാനുള്ളള്ള ഇടവേളള -> ഉച്ചഭക്ഷണ ഇടവേളള, കമ്പനി ട്രീറ്റ്ീറ്റ്
  • mother or father -> parent; പിതാവ് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മാതാവ് -> രക്ഷകർത്താവ്ത്താവ്

Avoid gender bias

  • Use gender-neutral alternatives for common terms. Avoid compounds that contain gender-specific terms (അവർ).
  • സെയിൽസ്‌സ്‌മാൻ/സെയിൽസ് ഗേൾൾ -> സെയിൽസ് പ്രതിനിധിതിനിധി. salesman and salesgirl are English loanwords; use sales representative.
  • ചെയർമാൻ -> ചെയർപേഴ്‌ഴ്‌സൺ. Chairperson is the inclusive term for all genders.
  • പരിഭാഷകൻ -> പരിഭാഷകർ/പരിഭാഷ /പരിഭാഷ ചെയ്യുന്നയാൾെയ്യുന്നയാൾ. For a translator the masculine form is common. Use the plural noun or the expression person who translates.
  • അഭിഭാഷകൻ/അഭിഭാഷക/അഭിഭാഷക -> അഭിഭാഷകർ. For an advocate the plural form is preferred.
  • For generalizations use plural noun forms, for example ആളുകൾ, വ്യക്തികൾ, വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ.
  • Do not use gendered pronouns (അവൾ, അവളുടെളുടെ, അവൻ, അവന്റെെ) in generic references. Instead:
  • Rewrite in the second or third person (നിങ്ങൾ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവർ).
  • Rewrite the sentence with a plural noun and pronoun: അമ്മമാർ, ചെടികൾെടികൾ, അവരുടെ.
  • Use an article instead of a pronoun, for example ഈ ഡോക്യുമെന്റ്് instead of അവന്റെഡോക്യുമെന്റ്്.
  • Refer to the person's role, for example വായനക്കാർ, ജീവനക്കാർ, ഉപഭോക്താവ്ക്താവ്, ക്ലയന്റ്.
  • Use ആൾ or വ്യക്തി.യക്തി.
  • If the user has the appropriate rights, he can set other users' passwords. -> A user with the appropriate rights can set other users' passwords.; അവകാശങ്ങളുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ, അവന് മറ്റ് ഉപയോക്താക്കളുടെ പാസ്‌വേഡ് ഡ് സജ്ജീകരിക്കാം.ം. -> അനുയോജ്യമായ യമായ അവകാശങ്ങളുള്ള ങ്ങളുള്ള ഉപയോക്താവിന് ക്താവിന് മറ്റ് ഉപയോക്താക്കളുടെ പാസ്‌വേഡ് ഡ് സജ്ജീകരിക്കാംം
  • A developer needs access to servers in his development environment, but he doesn't need access to the servers in Azure. -> Developers need access to servers in their development environments, but they don't need access to the servers in Azure.; ഒരു ഡെവലപ്പർക്ക് ക്ക് അവന്റെ ഡവലപ്പ്‌മെന്റ് ് പരിതസ്ഥിതിയിൽ സെർവറുകളിലേക്ക് ക്ക് ആക്‌സസ് ആവശ്യമാണ്യമാണ്, എന്നാൽ അവന് അവന് Azure സെർവറുകളിലേക്ക് ക്ക് ആക്‌സസ് ആവശ്യമില്ല.ല. -> ഡെവലപ്പർമാർക്ക് ക്ക് അവരുടെ ഡവലപ്പ്‌മെന്റ് ് പരിതസ്ഥിതിയിൽ സെർവറുകളിലേക്ക് ക്ക് ആക്‌സസ് ആവശ്യമാണ്യമാണ്, എന്നാൽ അവർക്ക് ക്ക് Azure സെർവറുകളിലേക്ക് ക്ക് ആക്‌സസ് ആവശ്യമില്ല.ല.
  • When the author opens her document …. -> When the author opens the document ….; രചയിതാവ് അവളുടെ ഡോക്യുമെന്റ് ് തുറക്കുമ്പോൾ ….ൾ …. -> രചയിതാവ് യിതാവ് ഡോക്യുമെന്റ് തുറക്കുമ്പോൾ ….ൾ ….
  • To call someone, select his name, select Make a phone call, and then select his number. -> To call someone, select the person's name, select Make a phone call, and then choose the number you'd like to dial.; ആരെയെങ്കിലും ും വിളിക്കുന്നതിന്ന്നതിന്, അവന്റെ പേര് ര് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്ത ശേഷം ം ഫോൺ കോൾ ചെയ്യുക െയ്യുക തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുകക, തുടർന്ന് ന്ന് അവന്റെ നമ്പർ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക. ക. -> ആരെയെങ്കിലും ും വിളിക്കുന്നതിന്ന്നതിന്, ആ വ്യക്തിയുടെ പേര് ര് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുകക, ഫോൺ കോൾ ൾ ചെയ്യുക െയ്യുക തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുകക, തുടർന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ ന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ ഡയൽ ചെയ്യാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നന്ന നമ്പർ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക. ക.
  • In Malayalam, if you cannot write around the problem, a plural pronoun (അവർ, അവരുടെ, അവരോട്ട്) is OK in a generic reference to a single person. Do not use constructions like അവൻ/അവൾ/അവൾ, അവന്റെ/അവളുടെ.
  • For a real person, use the pronouns that person prefers, whether അവൻ, അവൾ, അവർ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മറ്റൊരു സർവനാമംം. Gendered pronouns (അവൻ, അവൾ, അവന്റെ, അവളുടെ) are OK for real people who use those pronouns themselves.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities.
  • Do not use words that imply pity, such as രോഗബാധിതനായാധിതനായ or ദുരിതംം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നയാൾ. ന്നയാൾ.
  • Do not mention a disability unless it is relevant.
  • People-first language is hard in Malayalam and does not carry the meaning. Use a neutral approach, for example ഭിന്നശേഷിയുള്ളയാൾള്ളയാൾ (backtranslated as differently abled). It is not people-first but it does not highlight the disability.
  • handicapped -> person with a disability; അംഗവൈകല്യമുള്ളയാൾള്ളയാൾ -> ഭിന്നശേഷിയുള്ളയാൾള്ളയാൾ
  • normal person, healthy person -> person without a disability; സാധാരണ വ്യക്തിയക്തി, ആരോഗ്യമുള്ളയാൾള്ളയാൾ -> ശാരീരിക ാരീരിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടില്ലാത്തയാൾലാത്തയാൾ
  • Use generic verbs that fit all input methods and devices. In procedures and instructions avoid verbs that make no sense with alternative input methods.
  • Click -> Select; ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്യുകെയ്യുക -> തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുകക
  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple. Aim for one verb per sentence.
  • Read text aloud and imagine it spoken by a screen reader.
  • Spell out words like കൂടാതെ, ഒപ്പംം, കുറിച്ച്റിച്ച്. Screen readers can misread special characters like &, + and ~.

Abbreviations

  • Abbreviate words in the UI, mainly button or option names, only for lack of space.
  • Take the abbreviated form from the first letter of the word. If the first letter is already in use, take the first two consecutive letters. For compound words take the initial letters of the two main words.
  • ഉദാഹരണംം -> ഉദാ.
  • ശ്രീമാന്‍ -> ശ്രീ.
  • ബഹുമാനപ്പെട്ട്ട -> ബഹു.
  • ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് -> ഇം.ം.
  • പുല്ലിംഗംം -> പു. .
  • ധാതു -> ധാ.
  • സംസ്കൃതംം -> സം.ം.
  • ജീവശാസ്ത്രംം -> ജീ.ശാ.ാ.
  • വ്യാകരണംം -> വ്യാക.യാക.
  • നാമവിശേഷണംം -> നാ.വി.
  • നാമംം -> നാ.
  • ക്രിസ്തുവര്‍ഷംം -> ക്രി.വ.ി.വ.
  • പ്രാദേശികംം -> പ്രാദേ.
  • ഭൂതകാലംം -> ഭൂ.കാ.
  • Abbreviation is not common and not recommended in Malayalam. It is used mostly for technical word indexing (സാങ്കേതിക പദസൂചിക) in dictionaries.

Acronyms

  • Acronyms are made of the initial letters of the major parts of a compound term, for example WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • Malayalam has no genuine acronym. Malayalam uses the transliterated form of the English acronym.
  • Do not put a generic term after an acronym or abbreviation if one of the letters already stands for that term. Correct it in the localized version even when the English version has it.
  • Wrong: RPC call, HTML language, TCP/IP-Protocol, PIN Number, ബിജെപി പാര്‍ട്ടിപി പാര്‍ട്ടി, പിഡിഎഫ് ഫയല്‍യല്‍
  • In online help or documentation, spell out the words of an acronym or abbreviation on first use. Include the language-specific translation, the US term and the acronym.
  • ഡാറ്റ ആക്‌സസ് ഓബ്ജെക്റ്റ്സ് ( (Data Access Objects, DAO)
  • ആക്റ്റീവെക്സ് ഡാറ്റാറ്റ ഓബ്ജെക്റ്റ്സ് (ActiveX Data Objects, ADO)
  • In the UI there is usually no space for all three terms. Only in wizards can the acronym be spelled out and localized on first mention. With space constraints or no first occurrence, judge whether to leave the acronym as is or spell it out and localize it.
  • Users have different levels of product knowledge. Be consistent within a product in your use of acronyms and initializations.
  • Do not create a new acronym from the language-specific translated term. Do not replace an English acronym with a language-specific one. Leave the English acronym or abbreviation intact, as DLL and DPI stay DLL and DPI.
  • Hausa: Application Initialization DLL -> Farawa Afilikeshon DLL
  • Kiswahili: DPI Scaling -> Urekebishaji DPI
  • Many abbreviations and acronyms are standardized and stay untranslated. Follow them with the full English spelling only when the acronym needs explanation. Where the acronym is common, the spelled-out form only confuses users, so use the acronym alone.
  • Commonly understood, never localized or spelled out: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization).
  • If you are unsure what an acronym stands for, contact the Moderator responsible for this style guide.

Adjectives

  • An adjective gives an attribute to a noun and extends its definition. Its main syntactic role is to qualify a noun or noun phrase.
  • ഭംഗിയുള്ളള്ള പുഷ്പം. ം. Here ഭംഗിയുള്ള ള്ള is the adjective.
  • A possessive adjective modifies a noun by attributing possession or belonging. Frequent possessives are an English feature.
  • എന്‍റെ പേന.ന. Here എന്‍റെ is the possessive adjective.

Articles

  • English articles are a, an, the. Malayalam has no articles.
  • An apple -> ആപ്പിള്‍; a pen -> പേനന; the door -> വാതില്‍
  • Product names and non-translated feature names take no definite or indefinite article. Treat them as proper nouns in Malayalam.
  • en Windows Mail shares your Internet Connection settings with Microsoft Edge -> ml Windows Mail നിങ്ങളുടെ ഇന്‍റ ഇന്‍റര്‍നെറ്റ് കണക്ഷന്‍ന്‍ സജ്ജീകരണങ്ങളെ Microsoft Edge-മായി പങ്കിടുന്നു
  • en Website addresses will be sent to Microsoft -> ml വെബ്സൈറ്റ് വിലാസം ം Microsoft-ലേക്ക് അയയ്ക്കും.ും.
  • Translated feature names take a definite or indefinite article. They are not proper names.
  • en Microsoft 365 Toolbar has been installed successfully. -> ml Microsoft 365 ഉപകരണബാര്‍ാര്‍ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റാള്‍ ചെയ്തു.
  • For an English loan word, check motivation: does the English word have formally motivated features that allow straightforward integration into the Malayalam noun class system? English loan words must follow Malayalam grammatical rules. Buses -> ബസ് + കള്‍ = ബസുകള്‍, not ബസസ്.
  • Analogy and frequency tests are not applicable for Malayalam.
  • Always consult the approved terminology to confirm a new loan word and its article, to avoid inconsistencies.
  • Desktop -> ഡെസ്‌സ്‌ക്ടോപ്പ്പ്പ്, transliterated because there is no direct Malayalam equivalent. Similar terms: Click, Menu, Slide, Audio, Video, Multimedia.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear to the user.
  • Avoid overly long or complex compounds. Express the relationship among the compound components verbally instead. Unintuitive compounds are an intelligibility and usability issue.
  • Compounding is an important feature of Malayalam word formation. Most Malayalam compounds are noun-noun or noun-verb. Nouns combine freely with other nouns.
  • ഫയല്‍യല്‍ (file) + ലൊക്കേഷൻ (location) = ഫയൽ ലൊക്കേഷൻ (file location)
  • അക്കൗണ്ട് (് (account) + ബാക്കി (ാക്കി (balance) = അക്കൗണ്ട് ബാലൻസ് ( (Account balance)
  • The head of ഫയൽ ലൊക്കേഷൻ is സ്ഥാനം"ം", so it is a headed compound.
  • Noun-verb compounds are significant in word formation. Some have variant grammatical features and fall under compound verb or NP+verb.
  • en Internet Accounts -> ml ഇന്‍റര്‍നെറ്റ് അക്കൗണ്ടുകൾകൾ
  • en Logon script processing -> ml ലിപി പ്രയോഗ ലോഗോണ്‍
  • en Internet News Server Name -> ml ഇന്‍റര്‍നെറ്റ് വാര്‍ത്താ സെര്‍വര്‍വര്‍ നാമംം

Conjunctions

  • Conjunctions help convey a conversational tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone and style.
  • In Malayalam, a conjunction at the start of a sentence sometimes gives a light informal tone.
  • en As <product> gains features, there is a risk that older content may not display correctly.: <product>-ല്‍ സവിശേഷതകള്‍ ഉള്ളതിനാല്‍, പഴയ ഉള്ളടക്കം ം ശരിയായി രിയായി പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടേക്കില്ല ല എന്ന അപകടസാധ്യതയുണ്ട്.്. -> <product>-ല്‍ സവിശേഷതകള്‍ ഉള്ളതിനാല്‍, പഴയ ഉള്ളടക്കം ശരിയായി രിയായി പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടാതിരിക്കാനുള്ള ള്ള സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്.്.

Gender

  • Recognize the audience's sensitivity to male and female stereotypes.
  • Use language that is as neutral as possible. Do not stress gender differences or reinforce stereotypical distinctions.
  • Apply the neutral approach to scenarios, comparisons, examples, illustrations and metaphors too.
  • Avoid sentences that refer to a single person of unknown gender. Rewrite to make the subject plural.
  • Where a reference to a single person is unavoidable, do not use he or she, him or her or his or hers.
  • Generally avoid slashes to combine both genders. Exceptions exist.
  • Use a neutral noun: വ്യക്തിയക്തി, മേധാവിധാവി, സംഘമേധാവിധാവി, ടീച്ചർ, വിദഗ്ദ്ധര്‍ദ്ധര്‍, ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥര്‍ഗസ്ഥര്‍, ഉപയോക്താവ്.ക്താവ്. Use this for concept descriptions and explanations. Gender distinction on nouns is common in Malayalam, so plural forms of some words are used here.
  • Use two separate genders: അദ്ദേഹംം, അവര്‍. Only in exceptional cases such as License Terms, and sometimes in tables, for example headers or column and row titles.

Genitive

  • The genitive case has two phonologically conditioned forms. ന്‍റെ occurs with singular nouns whose stem ends in അന്‍ and with certain nouns and pronouns that take ഇന്‍. The second marker ഉടെ is used with other singulars and with all plurals.
  • Do not attach a genitive s to trademarked product names. It could read as a modification of the name.
  • കുട്ടിയുടെ അച്ഛന്‍ അച്ഛന്‍ (child's father)
  • കുട്ടിയുടെ കാല് " കാല് " (child's leg)
  • Possession is expressed by the genitive forms of personal pronouns, given as person, singular, plural, honorific.
  • First exclusive: എന്‍റെ, ഞങ്ങളുടെ, നമ്മുടെ
  • First inclusive: നമ്മളുടെ
  • Second: നിന്‍റെ, നിങ്ങളുടെ, അങ്ങയുടെ/താങ്കളുടെ
  • Third masculine: അവന്‍റെ, അവരുടെ, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ
  • Feminine: അവളുടെ, അവരുടെ, അവരുടെ
  • Neuter: അതിന്‍റെ, അവയുടെ
  • Reflexive possessive pronouns: singular തന്‍റെ, plural തങ്ങളുടെ.
  • Syntactic and semantic functions of noun phrases are expressed mainly by bound case suffixes.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Malayalam colloquialism of the same meaning unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
  • Translate the intended meaning of the colloquialism, not the literal words, but only if its meaning is an integral part of the text.
  • If the colloquialism can go without affecting the meaning, omit it.
  • en Ohh...: ഓഹ്... -> ക്ഷമിക്കണം...ം...

Modifiers

  • A modifier (വിശേഷണം ം or ഭേദകംം) changes the meaning of another element it depends on. You can normally remove it without touching the grammar of the sentence.
  • In This is a brown wallet, brown is the modifier. Removal leaves This is a wallet, still grammatical.
  • en Small bird -> ml ചെറിയപക്ഷി
  • en Red carpet -> ml ചുവപ്പ് പരവതാനിവപ്പ് പരവതാനി

Nouns

  • Integrate English loan words into the noun class system of the language.
  • For a new English loan word check motivation: does the English word have formally motivated features that allow straightforward integration?
  • Check analogy: is there an equivalent Malayalam term that justifies the noun class assigned?
  • Check frequency: is the term used in other technical documentation, and which noun class does it take most often?
  • en Delete it from server. -> ml ഇത് server-ല്‍ നിന്ന് ഇല്ലാതാക്കുക. ക.
  • en Enter a password to log into the server -> ml Server-ല്‍ ലോഗിൻ ചെയ്യാൻ ഒരു പാസ്‌വേഡ് നല്‍കുക
  • en DNS cannot resolve the server IP address -> ml Server IP വിലാസം ം DNS-ന് പരിഹരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല

Punctuation

  • Use a comma as a separator when several names or items are written consecutively, and for short pauses.
  • en Sorry, you can't add yourself as a friend: -> ml ക്ഷമിക്കൂമിക്കൂ, നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്ക്ക് സ്വയം നിങ്ങളെ ഒരു സുഹൃത്തായി ഹൃത്തായി ചേര്‍ര്‍ക്കാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല:ല:
  • US English uses a period as the decimal separator. Malayalam uses a comma. Do not use a space, because a space separates the numeral from the abbreviation.
  • In paper sizes the decimal separator and the abbreviation in for inches are kept, since the sizes are US norms.
  • 5.25 cm -> 5.25 സെ.മീ.മീ
  • 5 x 7.2 inches -> 5 x 7.2 ഇഞ്ച്

  • The en dash is used as a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. It is smaller than an em dash and usually longer than a hyphen, and often replaces the word to.
  • The en dash is also used in number ranges such as page numbers, with no spaces around it. Malayalam uses a hyphen here.
  • പേജുകള്‍: 1-10 (Pages: 1-10)
  • Use the em dash only to emphasize an isolated element or to introduce an element that is not essential to the meaning. Malayalam usually does not use the em dash. If required, keep the em dash in the translation as found in the source.
  • Ellipses (suspension points) mark the omission of words needed to complete the construction or meaning of a sentence.
  • നീ അവിടെ പോയിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ങ്കില്‍...

  • (അറിയിപ്പ്: ഇന്ന് സ്കൂള്‍ അവധിയാണ്)

Sentence fragments

  • Use sentence fragments to convey a conversational tone. Use them whenever possible. They are short and to the point.
  • Use the following steps. -> Here's how
  • Use short sentences to convey the exact meaning of the source text.
  • en Use the following steps.: ഇനിപ്പറയുന്ന ന്ന ചുവടുക‌ള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുക.ക. -> ഇനിപ്പറയുന്നവ ന്നവ ഉപയോഗിക്കുക.ക.

Subjunctive

  • The subjunctive expresses a condition, a possibility or a hypothesis. It is a verb mood used in subordinate clauses to express a wish.
  • In Malayalam the subjunctive is marked by affixing ആയിരിക്കും ും or ആയിരുന്നു to the future or to the infinitive of the verb. It follows the regular grammar rules of Malayalam.
  • സതീഷ് ഇരുപത്പത് കൊല്ലംം കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരു ഡോക്ടറാകും.ും.

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • A symbol is an object, picture, written word, sound or mark that represents something else by association, resemblance or convention.
  • The non-breaking space is also called a hard space or fixed space. In HTML create it by replacing the space with &nbsp.
  • Use non-breaking spaces whenever regular spacing is not possible or not usable, such as in HTML pages.
  • Normal usage: Microsoft ഭാഷാ ഇന്‍റര്‍ഫേസ് പാക്ക്
  • HTML page: Microsoft&nbsp; ഭാഷാ&nbsp; ഇന്‍റര്‍ഫേസ്&nbsp; പാക്ക്
  • &nbsp; represents the non-breaking space.

Verbs

  • Use simple tenses. Simple present is the easiest to understand.
  • Avoid the future tense unless you describe something that will really happen in the future and the simple present does not work.
  • Use simple past for events that have already happened.
  • English usually expresses continuous operations with a gerund. Translate it into Malayalam.
  • Be consistent in your use of the verb to be. en The document is too large. / Document too large. -> ml പ്രമാണം വളരെ വലുതാണ്. താണ്.
  • In complete sentences use verbs and the same tense as the source string. en Access was denied. / Access denied. -> ml ആക്‌സസ് നിരസിച്ചു. നിരസിച്ചു.
  • Rephrase is with have if needed for an appropriate translation. en The file "%s" is an unknown graphics format. -> ml '%s' ഫയല്‍യല്‍ അറിയപ്പെടാത്ത ടാത്ത ഗ്രാഫിക്കുകളുടെ ഒരു ഫോര്‍മാര്‍മാറ്റ് ആണ്.
  • Rephrase may + Verb as Verb + possibly. en The application may attempt to convert the graphic. -> ml ആപ്ലിക്കേഷന്‍ഷന്‍ ഗ്രാഫിക്കിനെ പരിവർത്തനം ചെയ്യാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചേക്കാം.ം.

  • Shorten this construction: en The following error occurred: "%1!s!" (error #%2!lx!) -> Error: "%1!s!" (error #%2!lx!).; ml തെറ്റ്: റ്റ്: '%1!s!'(തെറ്റ്റ്റ്#%2!lx!).
  • Shorten this construction: en An unknown error has occurred./ No error occurred. -> Unknown error. / No error; ml അറിയപ്പെടാത്ത ടാത്ത തെറ്റ്./ തെറ്റുപറ്റിയിട്ടില്ല.ല.

Localization considerations

  • The translated text must fit the local language, customs and standards.
  • The language should have the look and feel of a product originally written in Malayalam, with idiomatic syntax and terminology, while keeping a high level of terminological consistency.

Accessibility options

  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical or visual disabilities.
  • Hardware and software components engage a flexible, customizable user interface, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.
  • Some accessible products and services may not be available in Malayalam-speaking markets. Double-check with the appropriate resources.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are often trademarked or may be trademarked in the future, so they are rarely translated. Feature names are occasionally trademarked too, for example IntelliSense™.
  • For Malayalam, do not translate any product or feature name unless that product or feature is localized with its name. This applies to application names too.
  • Version numbers always contain a period, for example Version 4.2.
  • Version 4.2 -> പതിപ്പ് 4.2
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but technically they are not the same.
  • Product, feature and component names are often located in version strings as they appear in the software.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information. Check the approved terminology for the correct translations.

Software considerations

  • This covers all menus, menu items, commands, buttons and check boxes. Translate them consistently in the localized product.

Arrow key names

  • The direction names for arrow symbols can be localized into Malayalam.

Error messages

  • Error messages are sent by the system or a program to inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt the user to take action or tell the user that an error needs a reboot.
  • Apply the voice principles so the target translation is natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • Something went wrong. -> എന്തോ കുഴപ്പമുണ്ടായി.ായി.
  • Not enough memory to process this command. -> ഈ കമാന്‍ഡ് പ്രോസസ്സുചെയ്യാന്‍െയ്യാന്‍ ആവശ്യമായ മെമ്മറിയില്ല.ല.
  • Use consistent terminology and language style in localized error messages. Do not just translate them as they appear in the US product.
  • Use the target phrases below for standard phrases. Use another wording if it works better in the context.
  • Cannot …, Could not … -> കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ത്താന്‍ സാധിക്കുന്നില്ല.ല. For example File could not be found, File cannot be found. These constructions are used for an inability to affect an outcome.
  • Failed to …, Failure of … -> പരാജയപ്പെട്ടുട്ടു. For example Failed to connect, Failure to connect.
  • Cannot find …, Could not find …, Unable to find …, Unable to locate … -> കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ത്താന്‍ സാധിക്കുന്നില്ലല. For example Cannot find driver software, Could not find driver software, Unable to find driver software, Unable to locate driver software.
  • Not enough memory, Insufficient memory -> വേണ്ടത്ര മെമ്മറി ഇല്ല. For example There is not enough memory, No sufficient memory on disk, Not enough memory on disk, No enough memory is available on disk, There is not enough memory available.
  • ... is not available, ... is unavailable -> നിര്‍ദേശം ം ലഭ്യമല്ല. For example The command is not available, The command is unavailable.
  • When you localize an error message with a placeholder, find out what will replace the placeholder, so the sentence stays grammatical. Most source strings have instructions that detail the replacement text.
  • %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>, such as 3 or 512.
  • %c means <letter>, such as "f" or "s".
  • %s means <string>, such as "Click here to continue.".
  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>".
  • "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section".
  • In the English source string, placeholders sit where they naturally occur in English. English numerals typically precede the noun, so numeral placeholders typically precede the noun. If the numeral follows the noun in Malayalam, move the placeholder after the noun.
  • in %d days -> %d ദിവസത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ ള്ളില്‍
  • %d minutes -> %d മിനിറ്റ്
  • If adjectives and nouns agree and the noun is a placeholder, know the exact string so a preceding adjective can inflect. Most source strings are already worded to avoid an adjective modifying a placeholder.
  • If the language has agreement between a noun subject and the verb, reword the translation to avoid an ungrammatical sentence.
  • en Replace invalid %s? (user sees Replace invalid data?, Replace invalid file?) -> ml തെറ്റായ %റ്റായ %s മാറ്റണോ?
  • en %s already exists (user sees File already exists, Name already exists) -> ml %s നിലവിലുണ്ട്.്.
  • en %s is now set as your personal contact. (user sees Regina is now set as your personal contact, Mr. Kim is now set as your personal contact) -> ml നിങ്ങളുടെ വ്യക്തിഗത യക്തിഗത സമ്പര്‍ക്കപര്‍ക്കമായി %s ഇപ്പോള്‍ ക്രമീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.ട്ടു.
  • en %s stopped working and was closed (user sees The application stopped working and was closed, The program stopped working and was closed) -> ml %s പ്രവര്‍ത്തവര്‍ത്തനം ം നിര്‍ത്തുകയും ും അടയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു..

Keys

  • In English, references to key names such as arrow keys, function keys and numeric keys appear in normal text, not in small caps.
  • Do not translate the names of keys that appear on the keyboard.
  • Alt -> Alt
  • Backspace -> Backspace
  • Break -> Break
  • Caps Lock -> Caps Lock
  • Ctrl -> Control
  • Delete -> Delete
  • Down Arrow -> താഴേയ്ക്കുള്ള അമ്പടയാളംം
  • End -> End
  • Enter -> Enter
  • Esc -> Escape
  • Home -> Home
  • Insert -> Insert
  • Left Arrow -> ഇടത്തോട്ടുള്ള അമ്പടയാളംം

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands or dialog boxes are keyboard shortcuts. They help the user perform tasks faster. Examples: New, Cancel, Options.
  • Slim characters such as I, l, t, r, f as keyboard shortcuts: no.
  • Characters with downstrokes such as g, j, y, p, q as keyboard shortcuts: no.

  • A number in brackets after the item name as a keyboard shortcut: yes.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name as a keyboard shortcut: yes.
  • Duplicate keyboard shortcuts when no other character is available: no.
  • No keyboard shortcut assigned when no more characters are available, minor options only: yes.
  • Malayalam has 18 single stroke characters usable as keyboard shortcuts. Use numbers for the rest. English numerals are common in Malayalam for numbers, so those numerals are given as short keys.
  • Malayalam is spoken in Kerala. The soft keyboard version and transliteration are most preferred. The InScript Malayalam keyboard is used as the soft keyboard.
  • Suggestion: do not localize keyboard shortcuts. Malayalam uses the same InScript keyboard as Telugu and Kannada, but translated words differ, so shortcuts would differ and be inconsistent. Transliteration is the preferred input form, and standard soft keyboards exist. Even if localized, it is not consistent with other Indic languages.
  • Content for a general audience says keyboard shortcuts. In localization, distinguish the terms below.
  • access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to reach UI controls that have text labels. Access keys go on top-level controls so the user can move through the UI quickly with the keyboard. Example: F in Alt+F. In UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
  • key tip: the letter or number that appears in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization the key tip is the last character after the ` character. Example: HomeH`.
  • shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to perform a common action without going through the UI. Shortcut keys are not available for every command. Example: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys are used with the Ctrl key. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys (F1 through F12) are usually the best choices.

English pronunciation

  • Pronounce English terms and product names left unlocalized the English way.
  • If the language has an established pronunciation for a common term such as server, use the local pronunciation.
  • Adapt pronunciation to the English phonetic system if the original pronunciation sounds very awkward in Malayalam.
  • SecurID -> [sı'kjuər aı di:], English phonetic style.
  • .NET -> [dot net], English phonetic style.
  • Skype -> [skaip], English phonetic style.
  • Acronyms are pronounced like real words, adapted to the local pronunciation. For Malayalam keep all acronyms in English. It is easier for the end user to understand the context and intended meaning.
  • English phonetic style: RADIUS -> reɪdɪəs; RAS -> RAS; ISA -> ISA; LAN -> LAN; WAN -> WAN; WAP -> WAP; MAPI -> MAPI; POP -> POP; URL -> URL
  • Pronounce other abbreviations letter by letter, in English phonetic style: ICMP, IP, TCP/IP, XML, HTML, OWA, SQL.
  • In URLs leave out http:// and read the rest of the URL entirely.
  • Pronounce www in English phonetic style.
  • Omit the dot, or read it out. If read out, pronounce it the English way.
  • http://www.microsoft.com -> http://www.microsoft.com, English phonetic style.
  • Most punctuation marks are implied by the sound of the voice, for example ? ! : ; ,.
  • The en dash (–) emphasizes an isolated element. Pronounce it as a comma, a short pause.
  • Pronounce special characters such as / \ ˘ < > + - using the approved Malayalam translations.

Tone

  • Match the tone to the target audience. A more informal, playful and inspiring tone suits most products and games. Use a formal, informative, factual tone in technical texts.
