Armenian style guide

Voice

  • Write short, easy-to-read sentences.
  • Avoid passive voice.
  • Be pleasant. Make explanations individualized.
  • Avoid slang. Use colloquialisms with care. Stay professional.
  • Keep the general style clear, friendly, concise.
  • Use language of everyday conversation, not formal technical language.
  • Choose non-standard translations when they keep the intent of the source better.
  • Do not translate literally. Translate the intent and what the customer needs to complete the task.
  • Match the audience: technical terms for technical readers, common words for consumers.

Word choice

  • Use short, simple, everyday words. Short words save screen space and read faster.
  • App: use app, not application or program.
  • Pick, choose: use pick for fun, less formal, lightweight cases (pick a color, not choose a color); use choose for formal cases. Do not use select unless the UI needs it.
  • Drive: use for any drive type (hard drive, CD drive, external hard drive). Name the specific drive type when needed.
  • Get: use as a synonym for obtain or come into possession of. Avoid for other meanings.
  • Info: use in most cases unless information fits better. Use info when you point the reader elsewhere (for more info, see <link>).
  • PC: use for personal computing devices. Use computer for cases about PCs and Macs. Do not switch between PC and computer.
  • You: address the user as you, direct or indirect, with first- and second-person pronouns. Avoid third-person references such as user.
  • In Armenian, convey voice with shortened or short words in rare cases.
  • en Message -> Ուղերձ, նամակ: use ուղերձ, նամակ instead of հաղորդագրություն.
  • en User -> Օգտվող: use օգտվող instead of օգտագործող.
  • en PC -> ԱՀ: use ԱՀ instead of անհատական համակարգիչ or համակարգիչ.
  • en Tel: -> հեռ.
  • en E-mail -> էլ. փոստ

  • Avoid formality that adds no meaning. Use the preferred en-US word.

Abbreviations

  • Form abbreviations with the capitalized first letters of the words, or with the first three letters of the word plus a dot after the last letter.
  • For the plural, add -ներ after the last letter of the abbreviation.
  • Abbreviate in the UI (mainly button or option names) only for lack of space or to avoid wrong grammar.
  • Do not abbreviate arbitrarily. Use only the accepted abbreviations below.
  • նկար -> նկ.

Acronyms

  • In Armenian, form acronyms on the English principle, but use them less often. Examples: ԱՀ (Անհատական համակարգիչ), ՀՏԾ (Համացանցի ծառայություններ տրամադրող).
  • In online help or documentation, spell out the words of an acronym at first use. Give the language-specific translation, the US term, and the acronym.
  • Տվյալների մատչման առարկաներ (Data Access Objects, DAO)
  • ActiveX տվյալների առարկաներ (ActiveX Data Objects, ADO)
  • In the UI, space rarely fits all three terms. In wizards, spell out and localize the acronym at first mention. Otherwise judge whether to leave the acronym as is or spell it out.
  • Do not create a new acronym from the translated term. Keep the English acronym intact.
  • en DAO Recordset -> DAO Գրակազմ
  • Do not add a generic term after an acronym if one letter of the acronym stands for that term. Correct this even when the US English version has it.
  • Wrong: RPC call, HTML language, TCP/IP-Protocol, PIN Number, ՀՏԾ ծառայություններ
  • Exceptions written with small letters: բուհ (բարձրագույն ուսումնական հաստատություն), ջէկ (ջերմային էլեկտրակայան).
  • Keep standardized acronyms untranslated. Add the full English spelling only when the acronym needs explanation.
  • Do not localize or spell out: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization), ISDN, DOS, DSL, CD, DVD.
  • With non-localized abbreviations in Armenian text, add an Armenian auxiliary word to show the function: API միջերես, NTFS նիշքերի համակարգ.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives are not modified grammatically. As nouns they decline, take the definite article and plural forms. Some form comparative degrees by word building and syntax.
  • en ...there are no smaller letters -> ...ավելի փոքր տառեր չկան
  • Use possessive adjectives only for real property.
  • en Open your file -> Բացեք նիշքը

Articles

  • Armenian has only the definite article. It attaches to the end of the word and carries possessive, personal or demonstrative shades.
  • Non-localizable names take declension endings after the quotation marks, if needed: Word-ից, Excel-ի, «Internet Explorer»-ը եւ այլն։
  • Translated special names take declension endings after the quotation marks, if needed: «Հետախույզը»-ը օգնում է կարգավորել համակարգչի պարունակությունը։
  • For an English loan word, check motivation, analogy and frequency. Borrowed English words in Armenian have no formally motivated features.
  • Loan words in use: en web -> վեբ; en contact -> կոնտակտ; en team -> թիմ (թիմային); en script -> սկրիպտ.

Capitalization

  • If the first word of the English source is capitalized, capitalize the first word of the target. If it is not, do not, unless Armenian rules say otherwise.
  • Armenian uses capital letters less than American English.
  • Capitalize sentences and proper names: Aram, Yerevan, London, Ararat.
  • In a multi-word proper name, capitalize the first word and write the others in small letters. Exception: words that are proper names themselves.
  • ՀՀ պետական եկամուտների նախարարություն, Հայաստանի գրողների միություն, Միավորված ազգերի կազմակերպություն, Մարտիրոս Սարյանի թանգարան, Երեւանի Սուրբ Գեւորգ եկեղեցի, Գարեգին Երկրորդ հայրապետ, Աշոտ Երկաթ թագավոր
  • Capitalize every word in names of states, federations and unions: Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն, Մեծ Բրիտանիայի եւ Հյուսիսային Իռլանդիայի Միացյալ Թագավորություն, Ամերիկայի Միացյալ Նահանգներ, Անկախ Պետությունների Համագործակցություն
  • en unknown software exception\r\n -> ծրագրաշարի անհայտ բացառություն\r\n
  • en acquired -> ստացած
  • en Log off user -> Դուրս գրել օգտագործողին
  • en Edit... -> Խմբագրել…
  • Do not mimic source capitalization. Apply Armenian spelling conventions. Over-capitalization is awkward and makes the UI inconsistent.
  • If one capitalized English noun becomes two Armenian words, be consistent: capitalize both, neither, or one. Apply spelling rules consistently.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds understandable and clear. Avoid long or complex compounds. Unintuitive compounds hurt intelligibility and usability.
  • Armenian uses compounds widely: one single word by joining morphemes, two or more separate words, or words joined by hyphens. Length is not limited. Use any of these ways, per context.

  • en Internet Accounts -> Համացանցի հաշիվներ
  • en Logon script processing -> Ներս գրման սկրիպտի մշակում
  • en Workgroup Administrator -> Աշխատախմբի վարիչ
  • en Internet News Server Name -> Համացանցի նորությունների սերվերի անուն
  • Keep product and component names unchanged. Add to them with a hyphen, or make a periphrastic construction.
  • en Windows password -> Windows-ի գաղտնաբառ
  • en Microsoft Word document -> Microsoft Word-ի փաստաթուղթ
  • en Microsoft SQL Server Database -> Microsoft SQL Server-ի տվյալների շտեմարան
  • en Microsoft BackOffice product family -> Microsoft BackOffice արտադրանքի ընտանիք
  • en ActiveX Control -> ActiveX կառավար
  • Use these portfolio names unlocalized, always without hyphen or article: Microsoft Office System, Microsoft Windows Server System, Windows Mobile.
  • For an abbreviation or numeral plus a component name:
  • en CD-ROM drive -> CD-ROM սարք
  • en 2-D gridlines -> 2-D ցանցագծեր
  • en 24 bit color value -> 24 -բիթանոց գունային արժեք
  • en 3.5 Floppy -> 3,5-անոց ճկուն սկավառակ
  • en 51/4-inch Floppy -> 51/4-դյումանոց ճկուն սկավառակ
  • en 35mm slides -> 35 մմ լուսապատկերներ

Genitive

  • Form the genitive from the nominative with the endings -ի, -ու, -ան, -ոջ, -վա, -ց, or by internal flexion.
  • Inflect pronouns by changing the root: ես>իմ, մենք>մեր, դու>քո, դուք>ձեր, նա>նրա, ով>ում.
  • Avoid sequential genitive cases.
  • en In the upper corner of the computer desktop. -> Համակարգչի սեղանի վերին անկյունում, not Համակարգչի սեղանի վերեւի անկյունում. Use the adjective վերին, not the genitive վերեւի.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with an Armenian one unless it is a perfect and natural fit for the context.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the literal colloquialism, and only if the meaning is integral to the text.
  • Omit the colloquialism if the meaning stays the same without it.
  • en Bummer… -> Ափսոս…
  • en Working on it… Please bear with us. -> Աշխատում ենք լուծել խնդիրը… Խնդրում ենք մի քիչ սպասել։
  • en We've hit a snag… -> Խնդիրներ են հայտնվել…

Nouns

  • Nouns change by flexion, plurality and definition. English nouns can stand without a definite article (in dialog boxes, lists); Armenian requires the definite article on nouns.
  • Example: Պանակ(ը), պանակի(ն), պանակով.
  • Some nouns have internal flexion: տուն>տան, միություն>միության, հայր>հոր։
  • In borderline cases inflect by regular rules: տպիչ>տպիչի, not տպչի.
  • Form plurals with -եր, -ներ, -իկ, -ք, -այք, -ինք. The last four are very rare.
  • Add ներ after a vowel ending, եր after a consonant ending.
  • en calls -> կանչեր
  • en texts -> գրվածքներ

Prepositions

  • Use prepositions correctly. Do not omit them or change word order under English influence.
  • Armenian uses no prepositions. Use cases and connectives put before or after the word.
  • Use ի or առ instead of declension when the changing field follows the translated phrase and no field is intended for such connectives.
  • en Save changes to -> Պահել փոփոխություններն առ. Otherwise use Պահել փոփոխությունները [variable field]–ում, if the variable [variable field] was assigned.
  • Starting or ending a sentence with a preposition is acceptable.
  • en old Developers can go to the application management site to find the apps for which they are looking. -> en new Developers can go to the application management site to find the apps they are looking for.
  • In Armenian avoid formal, bookish prepositions.
  • en For security purposes your profile protected by password.: Անվտանգության նպատակով ձեր հատկագիրը պաշտպանված է գաղտնաբառով։ -> Անվտանգության համար ձեր հատկագիրը պաշտպանված է գաղտնաբառով։
  • en For parameter info, see help.: Հարաչափերի վերաբերյալ տեղեկությունները տե՛ս օգնությունում։ -> Հարաչափերի մասին տեղեկությունները տե՛ս օգնությունում։
  • en This operation is executed by the lower level drivers.: Այս գործողությունը կատարվում է ստորին մակարդակի սարքավարների օգնությամբ։ -> Այս գործողությունը կատարվում է ստորին մակարդակի սարքավարներով։

Pronouns

  • Pronouns decline and pluralize like nouns, numerals and adjectives.
  • Do not write Ձեր with a capital letter. Avoid using it.
  • en Use your mouse to draw circles on the page. -> Էջում շրջան գծելու համար գործածեք մկնիկը։, not Էջում շրջան գծելու համար գործածեք ձեր մկնիկը։
  • Address the user directly with first- and second-person pronouns like you. Avoid third-person references such as user.
  • en old Users can change when new updates get installed. -> en new You can change when new updates get installed.
  • en old This setting provides users with the best display appearance. -> en new Choose one of these schemes or make your own.
  • In Armenian use personal pronouns only where strongly needed.
  • Translate your only when it applies directly to the user or belongs personally to them: your settings, your files. Do not translate it when it fills a grammatical function or the ownership is obvious: your hand, connect your mouse.
  • Օգտվողները կարող են փոխել նոր արդիացումների տեղադրման ժամանակը։ -> Դուք կարող եք փոխել նոր արդիացումների տեղադրման ժամանակը։
  • Այս կարգավորումը տրամադրում է օգտվողներին լավագույն արտաքին տեսք։ -> Ընտրեք այս տարբերակներից մեկը, կամ պատրաստեք ձեր սեփակաը։
  • Երբ դուք վերջացնեք գործիքի տեղադրումը, սեղանին կհայտնվի պատկերակը: -> Երբ վերջացնեք գործիքի տեղադրումը, սեղանին կհայտնվի պատկերակը:

Punctuation

  • Comma: put it after same-sort members of a sentence when the conjunctions եւ, ու, կամ are absent. Set off an interposed participial phrase with commas. Set off direct address with a comma. Separate parts of a compound sentence with a comma when no conjunction or relative word joins them.
  • Armenian has a mark that other languages do not have: ՝. Use it for elliptical words, postpositional or antecedent participial phrases, postpositional qualifier, apposition, short direct speech.
  • Colon: one dot in Armenian. Put it after coordinating parts of a sentence with causative relation or some independence, after author speech before direct speech, when numerating words and numerals, and after short forms of words.
  • Unicode has no special code for it yet. Many keyboard drivers put 002E, which is wrong: text processors read it as sentence end. Per Armenian standard 34.001-06 use code 2024.
  • Three dash characters are used in Armenian.
  • Hyphen (ենթամնա): divides words into syllables. Per Armenian Standard 34.001-06 use Unicode 058A. Example: Հա֊մա֊ցանց
  • Joining dash: links parts of a compound word. No spaces before or after. Do not use it instead of en or em dash. Use Unicode 2010, not 002D. Example: տագնապ-ուղերձ
  • En dash: minus sign, usually with spaces before and after. Omit the space only when the minus shows a negative number. Example: 1 – 2 = –1
  • En dash also marks number ranges, such as page numbers. No spaces around it in that case.
  • Em dash (Armenian direct speech dash): use only to emphasize an isolated element. Do not substitute hyphens for dashes. Example: Կան տարբեր համակարգչային սարքեր — սալիկներ, հեռախոսներ եւ այլն։
  • Ellipses: in printed documentation do not use three periods or Armenian middle dots. Use the ellipsis character … (ANSI 0133).
  • Period: the Armenian full stop (վերջակետ) has two points. Use Unicode 0589, not 003A. If the English sentence ends with an exclamation or question mark, end the Armenian translation with the Armenian full stop.
  • Quotation marks: «», Unicode 00AB 00BB. Put names of dialog box buttons or other commands in quotation marks when it is unclear that the text is a button. US source strings may carry English quotation marks around software references.
  • Parentheses: no space between the parentheses and the text inside them, in English and in Armenian.
  • Place the full stop after the closing bracket when the parentheses enclose part of the sentence; inside the parentheses when they enclose the full sentence.
  • Շարունակելու համար սեղմեք «Առաջ» (կարող է պահանջվել արտադրահամարը)։
  • Շարունակելու համար սեղմեք «Առաջ»։ (Կարող է պահանջվել արտադրահամարը։)

Sentence fragments

  • Use sentence fragments wherever possible. They are short and to the point.
  • en Use the following steps. -> en fragment Here's how
  • In Armenian, fragments help most before lists of items and instructions. Make sure they fit the context and keep grammar rules.
  • en Use the following steps.: Կատարեք հետեւյալ քայլերը։ -> Ահա, թե ինչպես։
  • en Would you like to continue?: Դուք ցանկանո՞ւմ եք շարունակել։ -> Շարունակե՞նք։
  • en You're almost done.: Դուք համարյա ավարտել եք։ -> Քիչ մնաց։

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • Use non-breaking spaces and joining dashes to keep separate words on one line: numerals, units of measure, verbs and auxiliary verbs.

Verbs

  • Localize English passive voice with the Armenian instrumentative or ablative case, or the կողմից preposition. They express different shades of meaning. Prefer active voice.
  • en Windows Update has been disabled by your system administrator. -> Windows Update-ն անջատել է համակարգի վարիչը: or Windows Update-ն անջատվել է համակարգի վարիչի կողմից:, not Windows Update-ն անջատվել է համակարգի վարիչով:

Localization

  • Adapt the translated text to local language, customs and standards.
  • Give the product the look and feel of a product written in Armenian. Use idiomatic syntax and terminology. Keep terminology consistent.

Accessibility

  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical or visual disabilities.
  • Hardware and software components use a flexible, customizable UI, alternative input and output methods, and greater exposure of screen elements.

Applications, products, and features

  • Verify that an application, product or feature name is translatable and not protected before you translate it.
  • Version numbers always contain a period, for example Version 4.2.
  • en Version 4.2 -> Տարբերակ 4.2
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but are not the same thing.

Geopolitical concerns

  • Check maps, flags, country/region, city and language names, art and graphics, and cultural content for sensitive or offensive material in the target market.
  • Check maps and other graphical representations of countries/regions for accuracy and political restrictions.
  • Re-check country/region, city and language names even when previously approved. They change regularly.
  • Check cultural content, clip art, religious symbols, and body and hand gestures against the culture of the target market.
  • Keep country names in line with the Armenian Wikipedia list and the list approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.

Software considerations

  • Translate all menus, menu items, commands, buttons, check boxes and other UI elements consistently.

Error messages

  • Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected for the program to keep running. They can prompt the user to act or tell the user that the computer must restart.
  • Make the translation natural and empathetic, not robot-like.
  • en Oops, that can't be blank... -> Ոչ, չի կարող դատարկ մնալ...
  • en Not enough memory to process this command. -> Հիշողությունը բավարար չէ այս հրամանը կատարելու համար։
  • Use consistent terminology and language style. Do not just translate the US strings as they appear.
  • Many English error messages end with exclamation marks. Armenian does not use them. Use the Armenian emphasis mark (շեշտ) Unicode 055B per its rules.
  • Standardize standard phrases. The US sometimes uses different forms for the same thing. Use another wording only when it works better in context.
  • en Cannot …, Could not … -> Անհնար է …; example Անհնար է հավելել նիշք։
  • en Failed to …, Failure of … -> …ձախողվեց; example Նիշքի պահումը ձախողվեց։
  • en Cannot find …, Could not find …, Unable to find …, Unable to locate … -> Անհնար է գտնել …; example Անհնար է գտնել որոնվող միույթը։
  • en Not enough memory, Insufficient memory, There is not enough memory, There is not enough memory available -> Հիշողությունն անբավարար է; example Տեղեկույթը մշակելու համար հիշողությունն անբավարար է։

  • Dialing %s... -> Dialing business phone
  • The disk in drive %c: cannot be formatted. -> The disk in drive C: cannot be formatted.
  • Anticipate what replaces the placeholder, so the sentence stays grammatical.
  • %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>.
  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."
  • "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."
  • English puts placeholders where they naturally occur. The Armenian sequence may differ.
  • en in %d days -> %d օրում
  • en after%d minutes -> %d րոպե անց
  • %d, %ld, %u, %lu -> Number (such as 3 or 512)
  • %c -> Letter (such as "f" or "s")
  • %s -> String (such as "Click here to continue.")
  • If adjectives and nouns agree and the noun is a placeholder, you need to know the exact string to inflect a preceding adjective. Most source strings are already worded to avoid this.
  • If the language has subject-verb agreement, reword the translation to avoid an ungrammatical sentence.
  • en Replace invalid %s? (user sees Replace invalid data?, Replace invalid file?) -> Փոխարինե՞լ անվավեր %s-ը։

  • access key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to reach UI controls that have text labels. Access keys go on top-level controls so the user can move through the UI quickly with the keyboard. Example: F in Alt+F. In UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
  • key tip: the letter or number that appears in the ribbon when the user presses Alt. In UI localization the key tip is the last character after the ` character. Example: Home`H
  • shortcut key: a subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to perform a common action without going through the UI. Shortcut keys are not available for every command. English pronunciation

  • Pronounce English terms and product names left unlocalized the English way.
  • If the language has an established pronunciation for a common term, such as server, use the local pronunciation.
  • Adapt pronunciation to the Armenian phonetic system when the original sounds very awkward in Armenian.

  • Pronounce acronyms like real words, adapted to local pronunciation.

  • Most punctuation marks are implied by the sound of voice, for example ? ! : ; ,.
  • En dash – emphasizes an isolated element. Pronounce it as a comma, a short pause.
  • Pronounce special characters such as / \ ˘ < > + - using the Armenian approved translations.

Local usage

Preserve variables, HTML markup, and escape sequences exactly. Armenian text may expand substantially; shorten wording only while preserving meaning, and place permitted line breaks according to the translated sentence.
