Inclusive language

  • Comply with local language laws.
  • Use plain language: straightforward, concrete, familiar words. Prefer a two-syllable word over a three-syllable one, several clear words over one complicated term.
  • Name only cities, countries, regions that are not politically disputed. Use equivalent references; do not mix countries with states or continents.
  • Show diverse people and circumstances in text and images, in many professions, educational settings, locales, economic settings.
  • Never generalize or stereotype by region, culture, age, gender, not even positively. For job roles, choose names reflecting varied gender identities and cultural backgrounds.

  • No slang that could be cultural appropriation.
  • No terms carrying unconscious racial bias, none tied to military actions, politics, controversial historical events or eras.

Avoid gender bias

  • મહિલાલા -> વ્યક્તિ
  • હાઉસવાઇફ -> હોમમેકર

  • યુવતીઓ -> યુવાનો
  • For generalizations use plural noun forms: લોકો, વ્યક્તિઓ, વિદ્યાર્થીઓ.
  • Do not use gendered pronouns (તેણીની, તેણીનુંં, તેણી, તુંં, તે વગેરે) in generic references. Instead rewrite to the second or third person (તમે, તમારે); avoid the gendered pronoun (દસ્તાવેજ instead of તેનો/તેણીનો દસ્તાવેજ); refer to a person's role (વાચક/પાઠક, કર્મચારીચારી, ગ્રાહક, ક્લાયન્ટ); use લોકો or વ્યક્તિ.

  • When you cannot write around the problem, a respectful pronoun (તેઓ, તેના, તેમના) is OK in generic references. Do not use constructions like તે/તેણી and તેનું/તેણીનુંં.
  • For a real person use the pronouns that person prefers. Gendered pronouns (તે, તેનુંં, તેનો, તેના) are OK for real people who use them.

Accessibility

  • Focus on people, not disabilities. No words implying pity, such as અપંગંગ, વિકલાંગાંગ, અંધ, બધિરર, મૂક, પંગુંગુ, લૂલો-લંગડો ો, મંદંદ-બુદ્ધિ. Do not mention a disability unless relevant.

  • Keep paragraphs short and sentence structure simple; aim for one verb per sentence. Read text aloud and imagine a screen reader speaking it.

  • 10KB -> 10 KB

  • The degree symbol and the ordinal symbol differ. Do not use the degree symbol ° (ALT+0176 or ALT+248) as a substitute for the ordinal symbol º (ALT+167).
  • Do not abbreviate: en Pound -> gu પાઉંડ; Degree -> ડિગ્રીગ્રી; Ruble -> રૂબલ; Yuan -> યુઆન; Yen -> યેન.
  • Avoid unnecessary abbreviations in running text. Use standard abbreviations only.
  • For a Gujarati abbreviation, use the first letter followed by a dot ..
  • Never abbreviate a word so it coincides with an established abbreviation for a different word.
  • ઉદાહરણ તરીકે -> દા.ત
  • નંબરંબર -> નં.ં.
  • ટેલિફોન ફોન -> ટેલિ. .

Acronyms

  • Acronym examples: WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
  • In Gujarati, form acronyms from the first letter or first syllable of each word.
  • Never add a generic term after an acronym when one of its letters stands for that term, even when the US English version does. Wrong: HTML language, TCP/IP-Protocol, PIN Number.
  • In online help or documentation, spell out the words of an acronym on first use. Include the Gujarati translation, the US term, and the acronym: ડાયનેમિક લિંક લાઇબ્રેરી ( લિંક લાઇબ્રેરી (dynamic-link library, DLL).
  • Many acronyms are standardized and stay untranslated. Add the full English spelling only when the acronym needs explaining.
  • Do not localize or spell out commonly understood acronyms: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ISO (International Standards Organization).
  • Contact the Style Guide moderator when unsure what an acronym stands for.
  • Acronyms name places (UK, CA, USA), institutions (UNESCO), products (USB). Many English acronyms are used in Gujarati by transliteration: UNICEF becomes યુનિસેફ સેફ. Transliterate the acronym or leave it in English, by general convention.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives qualify a noun or noun phrase.
  • gu આ ફાઇલ ખૂબ મોટી છે. = en This file is too large.
  • Possessive adjectives: મારુંં, મારા, મારી, મારે, તેનુંં, તેની, તેને, પોતાનુંં, પોતાની, પોતાને, તેણીનુંં, તેણીને.
  • gu આ ફાઇલ મારા ફોલ્ડરમાં મૂકો. = en Put this file in my folder.
  • gu આ તેની કાર છે. = en This is his car.

Articles

  • Gujarati has no articles. en a door is simply gu દરવાજો.
  • For a singular item use એક: en a file -> gu એક ફાઇલ; en a folder -> gu એક ફોલ્ડર.
  • Keep unlocalized product and feature names in English, without articles: Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Write localized feature names in Gujarati script, almost always by transliteration: Calculator (કૅલ્ક્યુલેટરયુલેટર); Notepad (નોટપેડ); WordPad (વર્ડપેડ).
  • Choose the form for an English loanword by motivation (features fitting the Gujarati noun class system), analogy (an equivalent Gujarati term), frequency (usage in other technical documentation).
  • Use એક or કોઈ for a and an with English terms, for better sentence formation: gu કોઈ ફાઇલ ખૂટે છે. = en A file is missing.

Compounds

  • Keep compounds clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds.
  • Compound words or verbs with અને, તથા, ને.
  • gu શીર્ષ લેખ લેખ અને પાદ લેખને ચાલુ કરો = en Turn headers and footers on.
  • gu ખોલો પસંદ કરો અને તે પછી ફાઇલનું નામ લખો. = en Select Open and then enter the file name.

Contractions

  • Contracted forms such as કહ્યુ’તું ં for કહ્યું હતુંં occur in literature and older language. They do not apply to technical language.

Conjunctions

  • Use conjunctions for a conversational tone. Starting a sentence with a conjunction conveys an informal tone.
  • en While data are saved on storage, it is not possible to add a new reader.: old gu ડેટાનેસ્ટોરેજમાં સાચવવા ાં સાચવવા પર, નવાપાઠકનેજોડવુંસંભવનથી. ી. -> new gu જ્યારે ડેટા સ્ટોરેજ પર સચવાતો હોય તે ેટા સ્ટોરેજ પર સચવાતો હોય તે વખતે, નવો પાઠક ઍડ કરવો શક્ય કરવો શક્ય નથી. ી.

Gender

  • Gujarati has three genders: masculine, feminine, neuter.
  • Masculine marker is –o, as in છોકરો, બગલો. Feminine marker is –i or –a, as in છોકરી, શેરી, બાળા. Neuter marker is -uN, as in છોકરું.ં.
  • gu છોકરો દોડી રહ્યો છે. ી રહ્યો છે. = en Boy is running. Masculine.
  • gu છોકરી દોડી રહી છે. ી રહી છે. = en Girl is running. Feminine.
  • gu કૂતરું ઊંઘી રહ્યું છે.ં છે. = en Dog is sleeping. Neuter.
  • The rule has exceptions; do not apply it blindly. In product localization use feminine for file and neuter for folder.

  • gu આ દસ્તાવેજ ખૂબ મોટો છે Masculine.
  • gu તે ફોલ્ડર ક્યાંક બીજા સ્થાન પર ખસેડવામાં આવ્યું છે. ં છે. Neuter.

  • નો: gu આ તમારી ફાઇલનો ડેટા છે. ેટા છે.

  • ના: gu તે છોકરો દિવસના ઊંઘે છે અને રાતના વાંચે છે. ાંચે છે.
  • The genitive marker agrees with the following noun, not with the noun it attaches to.
  • Do not attach a genitive s to product names. Write Microsoft Office Word, not Microsoft Office Word’s.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors

  • Do not replace a source colloquialism with a Gujarati one unless it is a perfect, natural fit.
  • Translate the intended meaning, not the words, only when the meaning is integral to the text.
  • Omit the colloquialism when omission does not affect the meaning.

Modifiers

  • Gujarati has no separate modifier class; the adjective or adverb limits the meaning of a noun, pronoun, or verb.
  • gu તેણે પેન હળવેથીથ ી બેગમાં મૂકીં મૂકી = en She kept the pen gently into the bag.
  • gu તે એક સુંદરુંદર ઘર હતુંં. = en It was a nice house.

Nouns

  • Integrate English loanwords into the Gujarati noun class system. Choose by motivation (formally motivated features), analogy (an equivalent Gujarati term), frequency (usage in other technical documentation).
  • en Delete it from server. -> gu તેને સર્વરમાંથી હટાવો. ી હટાવો.

  • Form the plural with marker –o or matra –o: છોકરા-છોકરાઓ (character o added); છોકરી-છોકરીઓ; દલાલ-દલાલો (matra o added to the last character); જવાબ-જવાબો.
  • Use the singular noun form after a plural term such as many, number of, digits.
  • en All frames individually -> gu બધી ફ્રેમ અલગ-અલગ
  • en Keep the most &recent files only -> gu ફક્ત સૌથી વધુ તાજેતરની વધુ તાજેતરની ફાઇલો રાખો

  • en Developers can go to the application management site to find the apps for which they are looking. -> en Developers can go to the application management site to find the apps they are looking for.; gu વિકાસકર્તાઓ જે એપ્લિકેશન માટે શોધ કેશન માટે શોધ કરી રહ્યાં હોયં હોય, તે માટે એપ્લિકેશન કેશન મેનેજમેંટ સાઇટ પર જઈ શકે છે. -> gu ડેવલપર્સ તેમને જોઈતી એપ્લિકેશનને કેશનને શોધવા એપ્લિકેશન મેનેજમેંટ સાઇટ કેશન મેનેજમેંટ સાઇટ પર જઈ શકે છે.

Punctuation

  • The bulleted list sign is the same as in English.
  • Use the comma to separate consecutive names or items, to mark short pauses, and as a separator in numerals. Do not use a space for that; a space separates the numeral from the abbreviation.
  • gu બનાવ્યાંની તારીખ: ંની તારીખ: 17/3/2023 = en Date of creation: 17/03/2023
  • gu સાઇટની સૂચિ નીચે મુજબ છે: = en List of Sites are as follows:
  • The colon tells the reader that what follows explains or provides elements of what came before.
  • gu બનાવ્યાની તારીખ: 17/3/2011 = en Date of creation: 17/03/2011
  • gu સાઇટની સૂચી નીચે મૂજબ છે: = en List of Sites are as follows:
  • Hyphens, n-dashes, and m-dashes are less common in Gujarati than in English. Prefer commas, parentheses, or splitting the English sentence into two Gujarati sentences.
  • The hyphen divides words between syllables, links parts of a compound word, and connects the parts of an inverted or imperative verb form: ઈ-મેલ, ડ્રૉપ-ડાઉનાઉન.
  • The en dash is a minus sign, usually with spaces before and after, and often replaces to: gu મળવાનો સમય: 10-5.
  • The en dash also marks number ranges, such as page numbers, with no spaces: gu પેજ 4-11 = en pages 4-11.
  • Use the em dash only to emphasize an isolated element or introduce a non-essential element: gu તમે જ એક મિત્ર છોત્ર છો–એકમાત્ર મિત્રત્ર–જેણે મને મદદ માટે પૂછ્યું.ં. = en You are the friend—the only friend—who offered to help me.
  • Use a standard em dash with a space on either side: …unlimited worldwide calls — worth £8.49 (£9.76 incl. VAT) — and keep…, …unlimited worldwide calls — worth £8.49 (£9.76 incl. VAT).
  • Use ellipsis marks when omitting a word, phrase, line, paragraph, or more from a quoted passage.
  • The period ends a sentence as a full stop: gu મારું કાર્ય અહીં પૂર્ણ થયું.ં .
  • Bulleted items that are complete sentences each end with a period.
  • Bulleted items that continue an introductory clause take no period.
  • List items that are neither sentences nor continuations (chapters, sections, products, system requirements) take no period.
  • When the translation is longer than the US text, or split into several sentences, insert a period if it improves the style.
  • Never put a period after just one word.
  • The same period conventions apply to instruction lists, captions, callouts.
  • Gujarati uses two kinds of quotation marks: single ‘‘ and double ““. Use ‘‘ for speech or a quotation and for names of books, buildings, movies. Use ““ for speech or a quotation.
  • gu ગાંધીજી કહેતા હતા કે: “હંમેશાં સત્યનો આગ્રહ રાખો” ાં સત્યનો આગ્રહ રાખો”
  • gu ગાંધીજી કહેતા હતા કે: ‘હંમેશાં સત્યનો આગ્રહ રાખો’ ાં સત્યનો આગ્રહ રાખો’

  • Source strings may surround software references with English quotation marks.
  • No space between the parentheses and the text inside them, as in English: gu નવા ટૅબમાં ખોલો (ં ખોલો (Ctrl+Enter) = en Open in new tab (Ctrl+Enter)

Sentence fragments

  • Use sentence fragments for a conversational tone; they are short and to the point.
  • en For more information, visit:: long gu વધુ માહિતી માટેતી માટે, આની મુલાકાત લો: -> fragment gu વધુ જાણકારી અહીં છે:
  • en Select the account which..: long gu તે ખાતાને પસંદ કરો જે...ંદ કરો જે... -> fragment gu તે ખાતું પસંદ કરો જે...ં દ કરો જે...
  • en Select the object you want to change.: long gu તમે બદલવા માગતા હો તે ઑબ્જેક્ટ પસંદ કરો.ં દ કરો. -> fragment gu બદલવા માટે ઑબ્જેક્ટ પસંદ ં દ કરો.

Split infinitive

  • Avoid split infinitives in Gujarati. Write shorter, less complicated sentences instead.

Symbols and non-breaking spaces

  • Symbols raise no particular concerns in Gujarati localization.
  • Non-breaking spaces are not normally used. They keep words together so an automatic line break does not split them, as with 5 MB.
  • Remove the white space in some quantitative expressions to keep consecutive words together: 5 MB may be written as 5 MB.
  • In HTML text create a non-breaking space with   instead of white space: 5 km -> 5 km.

Verbs

  • Translate verbs in error messages consistently. Omit the predicate be when the sentence stays grammatical, consistently across all messages. Be concise without changing the meaning.
  • With a transliterated English term, add only કરવુંં.
  • en chat: with to gu ચૅટ કરવુંં; with ed gu ચૅટ કર્યુ; with ing gu ચૅટ કરું છુંં
  • en crawl: with to gu ક્રોલ કરવુંં; with ed gu ક્રોલ કર્યુ; with ing gu ક્રોલોલ કરું છુંં
  • en debug: with to gu ડીબગ કરવુંં; with ed gu ડીબગ કર્યુ; with ing gu ડીબગ કરું છુંં
  • Translate continuous operations, expressed in English with a gerund, with the to form. Topic headings such as chatting, debugging become ચૅટ કરવુંં, ડીબગ કરવુંં. Verbs with ing in headings also take the to form.
  • gu એક એકાઉન્ટ ખોલવું ં = en Open an account
  • gu Teams દ્વારા ચેટ કરવું ં = en Chatting through the Teams
  • Use simple tenses. Prefer the simple present. Avoid the future unless something really will happen. Use the simple past for events that already happened.
  • en After you are finished installing the tool, the icon will appear on your desktop. -> en After you finish installing the tool, the icon appears on your desktop.; old gu તમારું ટૂલ સ્થાપિત કરવાનું પૂર્ણ થઈ ગયા પછીઈ ગયા પછી, ચિહ્ન તમારા હ્ન તમારા ડેસ્કટૉપ પર દેખાશે.ેસ્કટૉપ પર દેખાશે. -> new gu તમારું ટૂલ ઇન્સ્ટોલ થયા બાદ યા બાદ, આઇકૉન તમારા ડેસ્કટૉપ પર ેસ્કટૉપ પર દેખાશે

Localization considerations

  • Adapt the text to the local language, customs, standards.
  • The language must have the look and feel of a product originally written in Gujarati, with idiomatic syntax and terminology and high terminological consistency.

Accessibility (localization)

  • Accessibility options and programs make the computer usable by people with cognitive, hearing, physical, or visual disabilities.
  • Some accessible products and services are unavailable in Gujarati-speaking markets. Check availability with the appropriate resources.

Applications, products, and features

  • Application and product names are rarely translated. Some feature names are trademarked too, such as IntelliSense™.
  • Gujarati has no specific trademarking rules for applications, products, and features.
  • Version numbers always contain a period: Version 4.2.
  • en WCAG 6.2 -> gu WCAG 6.2
  • Version numbers are usually part of version strings, but are not the same thing.
  • Product, feature, and component names often sit in version strings as they appear in the software.
  • Always translate version strings that contain copyright information, such as © 2023 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Check the approved translations of All rights reserved and Microsoft Corporation.

Software considerations

  • Translate all menus, menu items, commands, buttons, check boxes, and similar UI items consistently across the product.

Error messages

  • Apply the voice principles so the translation sounds natural and empathetic.
  • en Something went wrong. -> gu કંઈક ખોટું થયું હતું.ં .
  • en Not enough memory to process this command. -> gu આ કમાન્ડ પર પ્રક્રિયા કરવા માટે પર્યાપ્ત મેમરી ત મેમરી નથી. ી.
  • Use consistent terminology and style. Do not translate messages as they appear in the US product.
  • Keep messages user-friendly so the reader understands what to do to avoid or correct the error.
  • Standardize standard phrases. The US source uses different forms for the same thing; Gujarati also uses different forms with the same sense, as with પર્યાપ્ત નથીી and અપર્યાપ્ત ત.
  • en Cannot …, Could not … (File can not be saved., File could not be saved.) -> gu શકાતું નથી... ી..., શકાયું નથી... ી...
  • en Failed to …, Failure of … (Failed to connect, Failure of connect) -> gu કરવામાં નિષ્ફળ રહ્યું...ં ..., ની નિષ્ફળતા...ષ્ફળતા...

  • en ... is not available, ... is unavailable (... enough space is not available, ... enough space is unavailable) -> gu ….ઉપલબ્ધ નથી ી, ...અનુપલબ્ધ છેધ છે
  • Find out what replaces a placeholder so the sentence stays grammatical.
  • %d, %ld, %u, %lu mean <number>; %c means <letter>; %s means <string>.
  • "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>."
  • "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section."
  • Move the placeholder position when needed to keep the sentence grammatical.
  • en Your password will be expired on %d. (%d is the date) -> gu તમારા પાસવર્ડની સમયસીમા %ની સમયસીમા %dના રોજ સમાપ્ત થાય છે ાય છે

Keys

  • English writes key names in normal text, not small caps.
  • Do not translate the names of keys that appear on the keyboard.
  • en Alt -> gu Alt
  • en Backspace -> gu Backspace

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Underlined or highlighted letters in menu options, commands, dialog boxes are keyboard shortcuts. Examples: New, Cancel, Options.
  • Use the same localized keyboard shortcuts as Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Konkani); the layouts are nearly identical. This keeps Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, and Gujarati consistent.
  • Slim characters I, l, t, r, f: allowed.
  • Characters with down strokes g, j, y, p, q: not allowed; in Gujarati these are used for matras.
  • Extended characters: not allowed.
  • An additional letter in brackets after the item name: allowed.
  • A number in brackets after the item name: allowed.
  • A punctuation sign in brackets after the item name: not allowed.

  • Key tip: the letter or number shown in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization it is the last character after the ` character. Example: Home`H.
  • Shortcut key: a key the user types to perform a common action without the UI. Not available for every command. Examples: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most use Ctrl. Ctrl+letter and F1 through F12 are the best choices.
